Photo Essay: Haret Hreik Destruction in Beirut.
by Mohammed Shublaq of Samidoun, Beirut.
View a photo essay of Haret Hreik from independent media activist &
organizer with the Samidoun coalition, Mohammad Shublaq taken on Tuesday,
15 August 2006. Haret Hreik is a neighborhood in the southern suburb of
Beirut that was most heavily targeted by Israeli air-strikes on Beirut's
southern suburbs or Dahye in Arabic. Representatives from the local
municipality estimates that there are around 400 buildings, both
residential & commercial that were fully or partially destroyed by the
Israeli military.
On Monday, August 14th, internally displaced Lebanese refugees from the
southern suburb of Beirut & the south of Lebanon, began returning to their
villages and neighborhoods over one month after the Israeli attack on
Lebanon began. Tens-of-thousands of internally displaced people returned
to view the Israeli wrought destruction of their neighborhoods & homes.
Lebanese medical unites began searching for the dead among the rubble
while volunteers began collecting the rubble.
In addition to their struggle to reconstruct their homes and institutions,
internally displaced refugees are still facing the danger of thousands of
land-mines, unexploded rockets & munitions from cluster bombs dropped by
the Israeli army.
