Hello sex workers and friends,
Tomorrow is 6 weeks until our 6th Annual Red Umbrella March!
This year I want to do something a little different. Turns out the annual March to End All Slaughterhouses is again starting at the VAG on the second Saturday in June. It was fun last year, and we got a good little piece in the Vancouver Sun. But, the VAG is set to move, and the Robson South Plaza is getting reconstructed into some kind of public square thing by the City. So really, as a protest rallying point I think that location's days are numbered.
Also I have received several complaints now, that for people less abled, the march is too long and moves too quickly. I have also received a suggestion at the march last year, that we do a march in Gastown sometime, because the cobbled streets lined with iron pylons is reminiscent of Amsterdam's red light district.
I found a little history book called, The Shady Side, by Betty Keller, and she lists the spots and streets of the brothels in 1888 and some of the great cast of characters!
So, for this year's theme, we have come up with "Celebrate 130 Years of Resistance!" We will start at Victory Square and do a little history tour, and read some short excerpts. 1888 is when the first passenger train arrived in Vancouver, and with it came polite society which found Vancouver's Shady Side in need of moral clean-up.
I am hoping that we can get a few people to really dress up! Perhaps in costumes that resemble the steam-era: Steam Punk Madams? (You are gonna die when you see my Steam Punk Pimp outfit!) I would like to see a little bit of a theatrical aspect, maybe different people could give the talk at different locations along the way. (People are volunteering already.) Gassy Jack Square will make a great location for photos too.
Red Umbrella March has had five fabulous years of photos from our standard route, but it feels like it's time for a change. We will still do a stretch of Hastings and we will still end up at CRAB Park for oranges and watermelons.
I am really looking forward to seeing many of you again this year. And I hope more of you will come join in the fun.
In solidarity,
Andy
