Great message from Andrew Sorfleet!
One of the things I believe Bill C-36 is designed to do is banish
prostitution back into the shadows. We do not want to talk to
prostitutes. We don't want to hear from them. We don't want to see
them. This is what Harper thinks his Canadians want.
It's not always easy to come out of the shadows. There are many
reasons why sex workers feel too vulnerable to show their faces. But
we can still have fun!
There is a long history of prostitute protests where sex workers wear
colourful and even extravagant masks. Masks can certainly make a
parade feel festive -- more carnival, exotic.
There are other fun ways to conceal one's identity too: big hats,
sunglasses, wigs. Costumes can be hot and sweaty it's true, but people
can put their costumes on while there are media crews around and take
them off when they feel comfortable.
Masks also send their own message. They can evoke mystery. They can
suggest that we are forced to conceal our identities, in order to
protect ourselves, our families and our clients.
Don't let your fear of becoming known keep you from joining the fun!
In solidarity,
Andy
