No worries Fiona! I certainly don't want to seem spammy! :^)

If there is little political interest from the 75 people or so on this
list, I don't want to waste their time -- or mine. Most of the listservs I
am on are set up to have some political discussion. I find that current
events and news are excellent ways to keep up to date regarding legislation
that may affect all sex workers, and to motivate discussion about those
current events and the concerns they raise.

Here are some upcoming current events people here may find of interest.

The City of Vancouver has a sex trade taskforce report going to council on
Wed, Dec 18, which according to a Vancouver Sun article on Saturday
includes recommendations for bylaw changes to "make the sex trade safer."
Ultimately, I don't think that these bylaw changes really affect sex
workers who work in residential spaces. The only business licences the City
of Vancouver grants for residential buildings are home-based business
licences. Home-based businesses must do the majority of their work over the
phone or computer, not see clients in the residential space and not hang
signage etc. I don't believe that any of this is going to change.

Tuesday, December 17 is international day against violence against sex
workers. There will be a short march from the PIVOT office to the PACE
office starting at 7 p.m. Bring a red umbrella if you have one. The red
umbrella is the international symbol for sex workers rights.

Friday, December 20, the Supreme Court of Canada will be handing down it's
decision on the Bedford constitutional challenge. I assume there will be a
lot of political events to follow. As you may remember, the Bedford
challenge asserts that Canada's prostitution laws (communicating for the
purpose, living on the avails and bawdyhouse law) are unconstitutional. If
the laws are struck down, there will likely be a stay of three months to a
year while the Conservative Government determines new legislation to meet
the Supreme Court's concerns. Lots to watch out for!
