Simon Fraser University (Vancity Office of Community Engagement) presents
documentary by Paula Stromberg in collaboration with Women’s Network for
Unity (Cambodian Sex Workers Union). Sex workers are trying to have their
voices heard.

Are your charitable donations to help trafficked women being wasted?

Paula Stromberg, NGO Journalist and documentary maker, spent two months in
Cambodia collaborating with the 6400 member sex workers union, Women’s
Network for Unity (WNU), to produce two movies, Sex Workers Hurt by Rescue
in Cambodia, 22 min and in Khmer-language, Sex Workers’ Voices, 6 min.

The documentaries expose Cambodia’s anti-sex trafficking laws and Raid and
Rescue policies funded and promoted by international aid organizations,
churches and foreign governments that harm adult, voluntary sex workers and
their impoverished families. The docs first screened at the Freedom
Festival in Kolkata, India in July 2012.

At the SFU screening on October 9th, Stromberg will talk about the exciting
collaboration with WNU and interviews with sex workers in their rental
rooms along the railway tracks in Phnom Penh. Pivot Legal Society board
member *Kerry Porth*, sex trade educator and human rights activist, will
also speak.

Marginalized, too-often ignored, WNU members in the documentary explain how
current policies strip away their labour rights and human rights. The
mini-docs feature an ear-worm soundtrack by Cambodia’s acclaimed Messenger
Band.
