Canada and the *new* Iraq War

This Saturday,
Oct. 4 marks 30 days since Prime Minister Harper sent 
Canadian
advisors**to take part in the/**/new, US-led war in Iraq. CBC 
reports that Canada will shortly announce a full participation in the

bombing attacks taking place against Iraq and Syria by a U.S.-led

military alliance. Thus begins another cycle of war-without-end
against 
Iraq, and now it is expanding into Syria. This is an
escalation of the 
longstanding imperialist drive to control the
resources of the Middle 
East. The hypocrisy of this war is exposed
by the fact that the alliance 
against "Islamic State"
('ISIS/ISIL') includes Saudi Arabia, which has 
beheaded 19 people 
in a surge of executions since August, and is led by 
the United
States, which has executed 1389 people since 1976. StopWar, Vancouver's
anti-war coalition since 2002, condemns the government's decision to join
Washington's new war and calls for the withdrawal of Canadian military
forces from the Middle East.

The StopWar street poll will ask
people to give their views on Canadian 
participation in this
military campaign, being announced without any 
debate so far in
Parliament. We welcome everyone to take part and 
express your
opinion - should Canadian troops take part in this war, or 
should
Canada bring the troops home now?

The increased danger of war
in the Middle East and other regions calls 
for an urgent response by
all who stand for peace and justice. Later 
this month, StopWar will
host a public discussion on stepping up the 
efforts of the anti-war
movement, with speakers on Canada's increasing 
military involvement
in Iraq/Syria/Middle East. The date, time and 
location will be
announced shortly.
