1) After Cheney Protest, Efforts Mount to Protest Bush Visit to Surrey
Thank you all for making the protest against Dick Cheney's visit to
Vancouver so successful. Our efforts garnered local, national and
international media attention.
There is now also increased focus on George W. Bush's planned appearance
in Surrey Oct. 20 at the Surrey Regional Economic Summit at the Sheraton
Vancouver Guildford Hotel.
If you have not already, please write to and phone Surrey Mayor Dianne
Watts asking her to rescind their invitation to Bush: mayor at surrey.ca /

There is an important forum TONIGHT on the legal case against Bush,
starting 6:30pm at UBC-Robson Square, 800 Robson Street, Room C180,
featuring Gail Davidson of Lawyers Against War, Matt Eisenbrandt, Legal
Director of the Canadian Centre for International Justice, and Katherine
Gallagher, Senior Staff Attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights.
At a press conference this morning, these groups urged the Canadian
Attorney General to open an investigation and prosecution of former U.S.
President George W. Bush based on his individual and command
responsibility under Canadian and international human rights law for
torture of detainees in U.S. custody. They release a detailed and lengthy
dossier setting forth the case against the former U.S. president, and a
formal request that an investigation and prosecution be opened. More than
4,000 pages of supporting material setting forth the case against Bush
will be submitted to the Attorney General by the groups.

2)10 Years Too Many: Commemorate Victims of War in Afghanistan
Commemorate 10 years of the war in Afghanistan
Thursday, October 6, 5:00pm – 7:00pm
At the corner of Georgia & Hamilton (in front of the main CBC Building)
On October 7, 2001, the US-led bombing of Afghanistan began. Ten years
later, the disastrous NATO war and occupation continues, taking a heavy
toll in human life. Contrary to some media coverage, Canada’s role in the
occupation of Afghanistan *is not over*, with approximately 1,000 military
personnel still stationed in the country.
So we will gather on this 10th anniversary of the war to remember all the
victims and to renew our call for an end to the war, and for a real and
complete end to Canadian involvement in the occupation of Afghanistan.
Our event will take place on Oct. 6 in Vancouver, which is early morning
Oct. 7 in Afghanistan, the day of the first bombings in 2001.
