On September 29, CCIJ and the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights
sent a letter and 69-page “draft indictment,” supported by 4,000 pages of
documents, to the Attorney General of Canada calling on him to investigate
George W. Bush for torture when Mr. Bush comes to Surrey, BC on October
20. The letter and indictment are available at:
http://www.ccij.ca/programs/cases/guantanamo/index.php. We have received
no response from the Attorney General so we recently submitted the attached
follow-up letter.

We are now planning to file private prosecutions in British Columbia on
Tuesday, October 18th on behalf of individual torture survivors. We are
asking for the help of organizations in signing a Letter of Support. We
are still in the process of finalizing who will file prosecutions, and so
do not have a final letter for you to review, but it will be similar to a
letter that many organizations, including CCIJ, signed in February that
helped force Mr. Bush to cancel a trip to Switzerland. (The Swiss letter
is available in English:
http://www.ccrjustice.org/files/Updated%20Bush%20Denunciation%20Letter%207%20Feb%202011%20English%20.pdf
and French:
http://www.ccrjustice.org/files/Updated%20Bush%20Denunciation%20Letter%207%20Feb%202011%20FR.pdf).

If you could indicate whether, in principle, your organization could sign
on to such a letter, by emailing Aliya Hussain of the Center for
Constitutional Rights (ahussain at ccrjustice.org), we will include you in the
list. We will have a final text of a letter for support by Monday, October
17th, and ask for you final agreement by the early Tuesday, Oct. 18th, so
that we can launch it that day. We understand that this is a short
turn-around, and we can issue a second letter with more names after the
18th if you aren’t able to commit by the 18th.

Please forward this message to any appropriate listservs and to
organizations that might be interested in signing on.

Thank you very much,

Matt
