Greetings StopWar supporters,
We invite you to join us for two exciting events this weekend:
Vancouver joins Pan-Canadian Day of Action to Stop the War
End It. Don't Extend It.- Bring the Troops Home from Afghanistan
Fund Human Needs, not Fighter Jets!
12 Noon, Sat., Sept. 25
Start from Vancouver City Centre Skytrain station
Local anti-war activists will join with others across the country for a Pan-Canadian Day of Action to Stop the War, on Saturday, September 25. The Vancouver-based StopWar coalition will take part by holding a leaflet and picket action at several Canada Line SkyTrain stations, culminating with a visit to the office of Conservative MP Alice Wong, 5951 No. 3 Road, Richmond.
Stephen Harper wants to spend $490 billion on war over then next 20 years. The F-35 purchase alone amounts to a shocking $16 for 65 fighter jets plus parts and maintenance. If Canada redirected even a fraction of that, we could create thousands of good, green jobs and re-invest in public services and education. Instead, Harper wants to spend billions more on military equipment we don’t need - such as the F-35s, which can only be used to fight wars.
Recently, a number of MPs have openly speculated about extending Canada’s role in the war past 2011, which the large majority of Canadians and Afghans don’t want.
Join us on September 25 to demand: jobs and prosperity, not war and austerity!
StopWar's September film educational
Come on out to the Rhizome, Mount Pleasant's community cafe, for a showing of Robert Greenwald's film, Rethink Afghanistan. This documentary challenges the accepted narrative of American military involvement in Afghanistan with interviews of Afghan civilians, International observers and American policy makers.
Rethink Afghanistan
September 26, 6pm
Rhizome cafe, 317 East Broadway
Before the film we will hear from a Canadian soldier, recently returned from duty in Afghanistan, who witnessed first-hand the damaging role Canada is playing in the region.
A lively discussion will follow the film.
