American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein
David Ridgen and
Nicolas Rossier, Canada, 2009, 84 minutes
SATURDAY, MAY 8 | 2:00PM |
PACIFIC CINMATHQUE

The credo that the "personal is political" could have
been written especially for Norman Finkelstein. A man who seems
physiologically incapable of shutting his mouth, even when it costs him
dearly, Finkelstein has made almost as many passionate enemies as friends
and supporters in his career as a teacher, scholar and writer. The term
divisive doesn't quite do the man justice.

Co-directed by David Ridgen
and Nicolas Rossier, American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein is
a critical depiction not only of great personal sacrifice made in the name
of academic freedom, but more importantly the threat posed to the very idea
of freedom of speech. Deeply influenced by his mother who believed that the
Jewish people had a special obligation to ease the suffering of humanity
specifically because of what was done to them (both his parents were
Holocaust survivors), Norman came to radicalism early on in his life.
Norman began protesting against the war in Vietnam while at Princeton, and
it was here that he also met Noam Chomsky, who was to become both a friend
and a mentor. Chomsky's moral force influenced Finkelstein to attack the
spurious scholarship of Joan Peter's book From Time Immemorial.

It was
the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, however, that truly cemented
Finkelstein's commitment to the cause of the Palestinian people. He has
argued in a series of books that the Holocaust has become something of a
industry. Sometimes depicted as irrational or unstable, as in Yoav Shamir's
film Defamation, Finkelstein has written a number of books that level
furious criticism of Israel. At lectures and debates around the world, he
takes on all comers, be they august rabbinical scholars or hysterical
university students. Unfailingly passionate and articulate almost to a
fault, his war of words with Alan Dershowitz effectively ended
Finkelstein's academic career when he accused Dershowitz of plagiarism.

Whether you think Finkelstein is a raving anti-semite, or a profoundly
courageous humanist, he does not lack the courage of his convictions. But
more important than any label attached to him, is his right to write, think
and openly state his beliefs without fear of censure or reprisal.

"A
powerful portrait of a man with the courage to voice heartfelt criticisms
of a system he feels is morally repugnant."
- Bernard Perusse, The
Montreal Gazette

Directors' biographies
David Ridgen's award-winning work
has been screened to acclaim around the world. He is currently spearheading
two collaborations that will seek to investigate all the remaining civil
rights era cold cases in the American south, and a number of unsolved cases
from Canada. Ridgen is working with the Canadian Journalism Foundation to
establish Canada's first fund for investigative journalists. He continues
to work for the CBC, and is stationed at the CBC's Fifth Estate.

Nicolas
Rossier is a film producer/director whose works have appeared on
televisions and festivals around the world. Rossier was born and raised in
Geneva and moved to New York in 1997 to study at the Lee Srasberg Theater
Institute and film production at the School for Visual Arts and the New
York Film Academy. He is currently developing a new reality show on human
rights and law enforcement.

SETHI, a young emcee and performer
from San Francisco. Mandeep uses the
microphone as a catalyst of change,
 rhyming about social consciousness as
as well as cultural awareness.

Join us for a film screening of the
acclaimed film Lal Salaam, a fictional
 account based on the ongoing
social, political, and economic realities
 that are affecting Adivasis
("tribal people") and fueling Naxalite
 movements. Cast includes award
winning actors Nandita Das, Sharad Kapoor,
 Makrand Deshpande, Vijay Raj,
and Rajpal Yadav. (Film Details: 2002. 131
 min. In Hindi with English
subtitles)

For the past five decades, widespread neo-liberal
globalisation in India,
symbolized through mega-dam projects and special
economic zones, have
driven Adivasis off their lands and forced
communities into starvation.
 Landowners and multi-national corporations
have been supported by federal
and state governments to industrialize and
extract natural resources in
Eastern and Central India, where the Maoist
Naxalite movement has slowly
grown. Naxalites are active in approximately
20 states, accounting for 40%
of India's total geographic area, focused
within and around Adivasi
communities. In the context of the War on
Terror, the Indian government
has declared the Maoists as the 'single
largest threat to India security',
 recently mobilizing over 100,000 forces
as part of Operation Greenhunt to
 target Naxal insurgents and continue
forcible acquisition of Adivasi
 lands.

 We encourage people to attend
this critical event, featuring a film along
 with speakers, performance,
and discussion. Organized by South Asian
 Network for Secularism and
Democracy, co sponsored by South Asian Film
 Education Society. Contact:

VANCOUVER COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION NETWORK - CALL TO OPPOSE THE G8

* WE ATE THE G8 TEACH-IN - MAY 13

* WE ATE THE G8 PEOPLE'S SUMMIT - MAY 15

*THE PEOPLE'S STREET SUMMIT -
MAY 21

The Vancouver Community Mobilization Network calls for all those
who oppose the agenda of free trade, privatization, and market deregulation
that the G8/G20 stands for to mobilize against this spectacle of greed and
global inequality!

In the last ten years, tuition in BC has more than
doubled, financial aid has been cut, entire academic programs are closing,
and private colleges and corporations are increasingly taking over our
campuses. We demand the university become a site for emancipatory education
and not for the proliferation of global capitalism. It should give people,
regardless of age, class, or social background, the tools they need to
explore, critique, and transform their world.

As diverse communities from
in and around the unceded Coast Salish Territories also known as Vancouver,
we stand in solidarity with the Toronto Community Mobilization Network in
resistance to the G8/G20!

RALLY AND MARCH TO STOP HARPER'S WAR NOW!
Saturday,May 29 , 1pm

Vancouver Art Gallery
(North lawn, Howe ">REAL AID, NOT BOMBS!
The war
in Afghanistan has killed many thousands of Af-
ghan civilians, and over
140 Canadians. The total cost
to Canadian taxpayers is projected to reach
$22 billion.
Canada's annual military budget is over $18 billion, and
the
Harper government plans to pour $500 billion into the
military over the
next 20 years. At the same time, gov-
ernments across Canada are cutting
funds for education,
health care, and low-income housing. It's time to
bring the
troops home. Military spending must be redirected towards

genuine humanitarian aid for the people of Afghanistan,
and urgent social
priorities in Canada!
We're looking for your ideas and your participation,
as
we aim to make this a creative and vibrant show of pro-
test on May
29. To get involved, or for more information,

War Resisters Support Campaign - Vancouver

 Dear Friends and
Supporters:

We have exciting news! On May 25, Parliament will begin the
second reading of Bill C-440, in support of U.S. war resisters in Canada.
If passed, C-440 will give the weight of law to the two motions already
passed by the House of Commons in support of U.S. Iraq War resisters. The
bill will not be voted on in May, but a one-hour debate in the House of
Commons is an important step towards the eventual passage of the bill.

 ON
MAY 25, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WAR RESISTERS SUPPORT CAMPAIGN WILL DELIVER
TO OTTAWA THOUSANDS OF SIGNED POSTCARDS AND PETITIONS THAT DEMONSTRATE THE
WIDE SUPPORT FOR WAR RESISTERS THROUGHOUT CANADA. If you have already
signed and distributed postcards, THANK YOU. If you have not, or if you can
get more signatures, there is still time. THE NEW DEADLINE FOR SIGNED
POSTCARDS TO BE IN OUR NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS IN TORONTO IS MAY 21.

 ** To
request more postcards, please email wrscnational at gmail.com [8]. Please
give us a paper mailing address and let us know how many cards you can
use.
WE HAVE SOME POSTCARDS ALREADY IN VANCOUVER - please email Bradley at
bhughes at fastmail.fm [9]

** Also, please remember to contact your M.P. to
ask her or him to support Bill C-440. You can do so through this link on
our website:
 http://letthemstay.ca/action/email-your-mp/ [10]

 Thank you
for your ongoing support of our efforts to make Canada a safe haven for
people of conscience who refused to participate in an illegal and immoral
war. U.S. Iraq War resisters still face deportation and the threat of jail
for doing the right thing. Please help us keep up the fight on their
behalf.

** To request postcards: wrscnational at gmail.com [11].

 ** To
send an e-mail to your M.P. here:

Dear friends,

As our name declares we are independent Jewish
voices, and we hope that the proposed newspaper advertisement finds an
echoing voice in you. This is the first time that West Coast Jewish
Canadians have spoken out against the recent high-handed attempts of public
bodies to curtail our freedom of speech, specifically, our right to
criticize the actions of the State of Israel. And it is crucial to the
health of our community that Jews speak with more than one voice.

We need
your names to make our voices heard. So please reply to Terry Greenberg (
terrygreenberg at hotmail.com [16] ) indicating you would like to add your
name. We also need your money because ads are expensive. So please mail a
check made out to Independent Jewish Voices to

Sid Shniad

If you are not Jewish, we would greatly
appreciate a donation. For those who can afford it, a $50.00 donation would
be very helpful. If not, please give what you can. We would also appreciate
your passing this appeal on to other Jewish friends and
acquaintances.

Text of ad:

THE
BULLYING MUST STOP

We are a group of Jewish Canadians concerned about
recent political developments. Supporters of Israel have taken to labeling
critics of Israel as anti-Semitic. We disagree. We oppose anti-Semitism,
and don't need any instruction on the subject from the Harper Government.
We refuse to remain silent about the attempt to shut down debate on Israel
that is occurring in this country.

Both here and abroad there is a wide
range of Jewish opinion on Israel. All Canadians - Jews and non-Jews alike
- have the right to criticize Israeli policies or defend the human rights
of Palestinians without fear of reprisal or of being smeared with the
slanderous charge of anti-Semitism.

Recently, we have witnessed a series
of governmental attacks on freedom of speech: The Canadian Parliamentary
Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism, which threatens to criminalize
legitimate criticism of Israel, and motions by various bodies (the Ontario
legislature, the Toronto District School Board, and the federal Parliament)
to ban the word "apartheid" in reference to Israel's occupation of
Palestinian peoples; attacks on groups that fund Palestinian causes (the
defunding of KAIROS, the threatened defunding of Toronto Pride, and the
subversion of Rights and Democracy); and attacks on freedom of association
(the denial of a visa to George Galloway).

The leadership of groups such
as the B'Nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress has encouraged attempts
to prevent such criticism. These organizations do not speak in our name.
Canadians have the right to criticize the actions of their own or any
foreign government, including Israel. We refuse to be bullied into silence.

Memo to America: Stop murdering
my people

by Malalai Joya

"In recent weeks, there has been much talk
about Hamid Karzai's threats to join the Taliban and about his supposed
differences with the American government. But for Afghans, Karzai long ago
lost all credibility. The joke among our people is that Karzai doesn't do
or say anything without consulting the White House first. No amount of
nationalistic rhetoric or demagoguery on his part will change this
perception."

"Everyone in Afghanistan knows that Karzai was placed into
power with the backing of the United States and its allies, and to this day
he relies on their support. His regime would not last a day without it. And
Afghans know too well the reality of his corrupt government: It has
delivered nothing to the country's poor other than sorrow and destitution,
while filling the pockets of drug traffickers, warlords, and its own
corrupt officials..."
