A reading from 'A Woman Among Warlords: The
Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice'

Come out
and enjoy a drink and good company at the beautiful and historic Sylvia
Hotel in the West End. 'A Woman Among Warlords' is the political memoir of
Malalai Joya, whom the BBC has called 'the bravest woman in Afghanistan'.
Her book was co-written with Vancouver writer and social justice activist
Derrick O'Keefe, who will be reading selected excerpts.

Joya, now 31, was
the youngest woman elected to the Afghan parliament in 2005. She is an
outspoken advocate of women's rights and a critic of the NATO war, as well
as powerful warlords and the Taliban. She has survived multiple
assassination attempts, and currently lives a clandestine life in a series
of safe houses in Kabul -- we hope to connect with her on the phone so she
can briefly address us about her book and her life's work.

A Woman Among
Warlords is available for sale through all major bookstores. Copies can
also be purchased after the reading.

     2. Public forum: HOPE FOR HAITI IN LATIN AMERICA Friday,
March 5, 7 pm Vancouver Community College, Room 420 250 W. Pender St.,
Vancouver A new, continent-wide and progressive social force is rising
in Latin America, spearheaded by the ALBA alliance of eight countries,
including Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia. What is Haiti's history in the
Americas? How can alliances be created with the progressive governments in
the region as Haiti fights for a just and meaningful reconstruction?

   3. Bolivia and Venezuela's message: 'Change the system, Not the
climate!' TWO GUEST SPEAKERS ON THE FIGHT FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE AFTER
COPENHAGEN * Pablo Solon, Bolivia's representative at the United Nations
and lead spokesperson on climate change at the Copenhagen Summit * Federico
Fuentes, participant in the revolutionary process in Venezuela and writer
for Venezuelanalysis.com, Green Left Weekly and Bolivia Rising blog The
recent international summit on climate change hosted by the United Nations
on Copenhagen ended in disappointment and recrimination. Greenpeace called
it a "crime scene, with the guilty parties fleeing to the airport." While
Obama, Harper and other leaders of the rich countries stood accused, two
heads of state in particular made connections with the tens of thousands of
climate justice activists in the streets. Evo Morales of Bolivia, and Hugo
Chavez of Venezuela, spoke for the world's majority when they condemned
global inequality and capitalism as the root causes of the climate crisis.
We invite you to hear two voices from Latin America, who will put the
discussion of climate change in the context of the regional movement for
self-determination, economic integration, indigenous rights and 'socialism
for the 21st century' -- a movement that has given birth to ALBA, the
Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas. Recent article by Pablo Solon:
