_"Bolivia's World People's Summit on
Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth was radical, inspiring,
uncompromising and exactly what was needed. Up to 30,000 people from six
continents took part in the summit, which was held in the Bolivian city of
Cochabamba from April 19 to 22... The call from Cochabamba is unmistakable.
Global warming is not just an 'environmental' concern. To save the planet
from dangerous climate change the climate movement must also stand for
radical social change and grassroots democracy." - Green Left

SPEAKER'S BIO
Robert Lovelace is an adjunct Professor at Queen's
University in the Department of Global Development Studies. Robert is also
an activist in anti-colonial struggles. In 2008, Robert spent 3 ½ months as

that Aboriginal law is an essential part of Canadian law. Robert continues
to study and speak on issues regarding "corporate social responsibility"
and the effects of the Canadian mining industry on indigenous people in
Canada and internationally. He has traveled in Ecuador and Bolivia,
speaking with indigenous peoples about the rights of mother earth. Robert
is a retired Chief of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation. He lives in the
Algonquin highlands at Eel Lake in the traditional Ardoch territory where
he continues to offer traditional teaching and ceremony.

JOIN NO ONE IS ILLEGAL FOR A COMMUNITY FORUM: (Part 1 of 2)
***
Rejecting Kenney the Neo-conservative Ideologue ***
===========================
Monday June 14th, 2010
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Learning Resource Room
Britannia Community Center (West side of Commercial
Drive at Napier Street)
==========================
Part 1: Rejecting
Kenney the Neo-conservative Ideologue
Part 2: Resisting Kenney's
anti-immigrant policies (Date TBA)
Join No One Is Illegal for a community
forum and discussion on
Conservative MP and Minister of Citizenship and
Immigration Jason Kenney's
recent neoconservative attacks on lesbian, gay,
trans, and queer
communities; Muslim women; immigrants; and his ongoing
support for
Canadian military occupations and the Israeli apartheid
regime.
* Fatima Jaffer: journalist and community organizer with
Coalition of
South Asian Women Against Violence.
* Hanna Kawas:
Palestinian activist from Bethlehem. He is the Chairperson
of the Canada
Palestine Association.
* Marla Renn: anti-war activist who has been
active with Stopwar.ca and
Vancouver Community Mobilization Network.
*
Proma Tagore: writer, poet, and community organizer on anti-racist,
feminist and queer issues. She is a member of No One Is
Illegal-Vancouver.
Jason Kenney has repeatedly made comments about Canada
not being a 'hotel'
and wanting to get tough on immigrants who do not
"integrate" or speak the
(colonial) languages of English and French.
Kenney also supports Quebec
Bill C-94 that discriminates against women who
wear the niqab (face veil)
by denying them essential public services
including health and education.
This legislates the unequal treatment of
Muslim women based on their
choices of religious and personal
expression.
In 2009, Kenney introduced a new citizenship guide which
listed the
obligations of citizenship as including getting a job and not
engaging in
"barbaric cultural practices". The latter section is
accompanied by an
image of a woman wearing a hijab. Notably omitted from
this new
citizenship guide is mention of the rights of lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and
trans people. It was later revealed that Kenney had
deliberately removed
LGBT references from the guide.
The guide does,
however, make ample room for Canada's military history and
a recruitment
advertisement given Kenney's vocal support for imperialist
wars and
military occupations:
- Labeling Iraq war resisters as bogus refugee
claimants.
- Barring British MP George Galloway, because of his opposition
to the
military occupation of Afghanistan.
- Pulling Canada out of the
Durban World Conference Against Racism even
before the apartheid state of
Israel did.
- Cutting ESL funding to the Canadian Arab Federation due to
their
involvement in pro-Palestinian efforts.
Join us in a forum and
discussion on the role of Jason Kenney and the
Canadian government in
supporting oppression and occupation.

March Against Jason Kenney:

No One Is
Illegal is calling on you to join a growing campaign of people
across the
country who are making it known that we will not accept
Minister of
Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney's
continuing
violence against refugees and migrant workers, his racist
attacks and
tirades against immigrants, or his blatant acts of censorship
of
anti-occupation efforts.

Slam the Gate on the G8!
> A Rally and March in Opposition to the G8/G20
Summits.
******************************************
Saturday, June 26th,
2010 @ Noon
Grandview Park (on Commercial Drive, between William and
Charles St.)
Bring noise makers, banners, and
friends!
******************************************
Come join us as we
march in solidarity with the Toronto Community Mobilization Network in
protest against the G8/G20 Summits where so-called 'leaders' and bankers of
the twenty richest countries are meeting in Huntsville and Toronto June
25-27 2010. At the Summits they will be discussing the themes of the global
economy, development and climate change in a closed door, unaccountable
meeting. Let's send a loud message to the G8/G20 Elite that we reject their
unaccountable meetings to further economic and social disparity, promote
exploitation, profit, environmental degradation and colonization of the
world's resources.
What are the G8 and G20 Summits?
The G8 and G20
Summits are meetings of the heads of states, financial ministers and
bankers of the richest countries in the world. The IMF and World Bank and
other institutions are also present. A gathering of the world's richest
industrialized countries, the extensively secured meetings are an attempt
to further the ongoing exploitation of global communities and resources
through the same policies, multilateral agreements, and wars that have
resulted in the current financial crisis and ecological destruction of our
planet. The G8 and G20 summits consistently push an agenda of
neo-liberalism and structural adjustment programs commonly including:
decreased trade barriers, the removal of labour and environmental
protections, cut backs on social services, and the privatization of both
resources and public sector services. They are meeting to make decisions
that will result in more exploitation of people and the environment while
ensuring that the systems that increase colonization, wars and displacement
are maintained.
Why Oppose the G8 and G20 Summits?
As diverse
communities from in and around the un-ceded Coast Salish Territories known
as Vancouver, we reject both the institution of the G8/G20 and the ideology
of neo-liberalism on which it is based. Neoliberal policies lead to
increased corporate control, and to increased levels of inequality between
the rich and the poor - both locally and internationally. The so-called
"world leaders" who led the world into one of the worst economic disasters
of the last century have no right to make economic policy for the rest of
us. Globally, economic inequality is greater today than it has ever been in
the history of the world. We oppose the agenda of free trade, privatization
and market deregulation that the G8/G20 stands for, seeing it as a tool to
reinforce the colonial pattern of domination of the global south by the
north and the vast discrepancies between the wealthiest and poorest people
in the world.

RABBLE.CA: INDEPENDENT MEDIA APPEAL
Dear rabblers,
We are writing
today to ask you to become a member or renew your membership at _rabble.ca
[14]_. For as little as $5/month you can make a big difference in our
capacity to cover and deliver news that you won't find elsewhere. You can
sign up right now at http://rabble.ca/membership [15]
Here is a taste:
this week we released an exclusive first interview with Canadian activist,
Kevin Neish, who was aboard the flotilla attacked by Israel early this
week. His story is raw, and not one that you are hearing in mainstream
media. We also spoke to Kevin before he boarded the flotilla, for his
thoughts before embarking on the humanitarian delegation. We brought news,
audio and images from the rallies in protest to the attacks, including
video of Naomi Klein addressing the crowd in Dundas Square in Toronto, and
audio of former PM Paul Martin, sharing his perspective on the issue.
On
Friday we also published personal accounts of CSIS intimidation of
activists in the lead up to the G8 and G20. Find all these stories
http://rabble.ca [16]_ _
This week you will also find many stories from
the Congress of the Humanities: rabble is the media sponsor of this year's
academic extravaganza, and on the rpn you'll find talks by Ed Broadbent,
Chief Billy Diamond, a discussion on Cochabamba featuring Ben Powless, and
on opportunities for social activism at the G20, by Fred Wilson of the
Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union. (Find all these at
http://rabble.ca/podcasts [17])
And just this week -- there is much much
more -- including an important analysis of Bill C-9, concerns about Bill
C-3, news about Toronto Pride's censorship quandry, Enbridge's desire to
bring oil tankers to fragile areas of the B.C. coast... and more! (See
http://rabble.ca/features [18].)
_rabble.ca [19]_ is a form of
fight-back. It is a fight-back against the narratives of private over
public, of business over labour, of "me" over "us." Our community media is
just that: about, by and for communities to explore the issues that need to
be discussed. We think rabble helps us all to learn, challenge, grow and
work to make Canada a better place. Will you help us build and strengthen
our work by becoming a member of _rabble.ca [20]_ or if you are already a
member, by increasing your membership level?
In the spirit of promoting a
more democratic and equitable Canada we are proud that our site is 100%
free to access and has been since we started in 2001. This means we survive
because of support we get from community members. Your monthly donation of
$5, $8, $15, $25 or $50 is crucial to our survival. Plus, with your
membership donation of at least $60/year you can receive a free
subscription to one of more than a dozen leading Canadian independent
magazines. If you give at least $8/month we will also send you our new book
"Best of rabble.ca [21] 2009." If you can give more, we hope you will
consider upping your donation to $15, $25 or $50 per month.
As you likely
know rabble brings a broad range of voices to our site through articles,
blogs, podcasts, videos, book reviews, discussion board, links to civil
society groups, news from around the web, our community calendar and the
other features that make rabble a dynamic source for alternative news and
views. Over the past six months alone we have provided exclusive coverage
of the Vancouver Olympics resistance; the climate talks in Copenhagen and
in Cochabamba; we broke the story on Harper government shenanigans around
the banning of British MP George Galloway; and the news about Amy Goodman's
border trouble.
We launched "issue pages" on a range of specific items
(including labour, the environment, Haiti, and Gaza), launched a "video
commons" and added new columnists, including a weekly video commentary
section. We livestreamed events including addresses by Naomi Klein on
Climate Debt and the Project Fly Home telethon -- and much more than we can
squeeze into this brief message.
There is much more to come as we mark
our 10th year, beginning with our multi-media in-depth coverage of the
G8/G20 (follow our independent coverage at: http://rabble.ca/issues [22]).
In other words, we deliver on our promise to use our members' support to
expand news coverage and analysis. Please become a member or increase your
membership right now: http://www.rabble.ca/about/membership [23].
We need
your help, please join today.
Sincerely,
Kim Elliott, Publisher, Duncan
Cameron, President, and all the rabble staff
P.S: Every year we produce a
thorough annual report so the community knows how we spent its money to
bring our news to the world. This report can be found at:
