On Saturday Aug 7, 2010 at 7:30 pm Lanterns For Peace is holding a
Multicultural Peace Lantern Ceremony at the South end of Burnaby's Central
Park.
Lanterns For Peace is held in early August to mark the anniversary of the
deaths of over 100,000 civilians in the Nuclear bombing of the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but this event is also intended as a
beautiful, non-political ceremony where we remember the ordinary people
who have suffered and died in ALL wars. Perhaps more importantly, it
offers Canadian children and their families a chance to express their
commitment to help make the rest of the world a safer, more peaceful
place. The event will start with an early evening ceremony in which one or
two brief 'keynote' speeches are interspersed with music, singing and
poetry on peace themes, and finish at dusk with a procession to set
candle-lit paper lanterns afloat on a small lake. People arriving early
will have an opportunity to decorate their own lantern shades.
