[Smashpatriarchy] Regarding the Creep Posters

I agree with Chris on

"Recognize that many women are bombarded with sexual interest, invitations, harassment, groping, and worse on an almost constant basis."

'Recognize' indicates that this is the reality/fact, or we could use "Recognize the fact that" just to be clearer. Using 'recognize' also allows us to skip "Because it's true" and leaves room for more productive action word/phrase in the end similar to Disengage in tip #5. Maybe something like, respect their space.

Ah, good point about "understand". The funny thing is that it was suggested by a female friend of mine as an alternative to 'recognize'.
I feel like "Believe..." doesn't quite follow the same tone as the rest of the posters. They've already got a confrontational edge (which is important!) but "Because it's true" seems to push it further from mainstream accessibility.

Then again #4 was slightly different in tone from the others to begin with, so I dunno. Only other thing is that "Believe" has the connotation of being a matter of faith.
I'd go with "Recognize," if only because it fits the original tone. And, though design considerations are secondary to clarity of message, it will be easier to fit legibly onto a poster.

Because it's true.

i hesitate to tell men to "understand" women's experiences.. because they can't.
maybe

Believe the reality that many women are bombarded with sexual interest, invitations, harassment, groping, and worse on an almost constant basis.

Because it's true.
or Recognize that many women are bombarded with sexual interest, invitations, harassment, groping, and worse on an almost constant basis.

in tip #5 i think that Deal with is clear enough.

feel free to forward these thoughts to the SAPs

Hey folks! So overall, as we've seen, the Don't Be A Creep Posters went over really well. But there have been some issues brought up regarding the wording of Tip #4 (which I think could also apply to Tip #5). To refresh:

Tip #4:Deal with the fact that many women are bombarded with sexual interest, invitations, harassment, groping, and worse on an almost constant basis.

Tip #5:Deal with the possibility that she'll receive your interest differently than you intend. Disengage.
Regarding #4 in particular, there's been a bit of confusion as to what is meant by "Deal with..."

So at the meeting today, we agreed that we should reconsider the wording before we package these up as PDFs for wider distribution.
My suggestion:Understand that many women are bombarded with sexual interest, invitations, harassment, groping, and worse on an almost constant basis.

Or possibly "Understand the fact that..." to hew closer to the original wording.
I think this particular issue of wording came up because #4 and #5 were originally a single tip but had to be separated to make them properly digestible for a poster. #5 still uses the "deal with" language, but I think since it has the imperative "Disengage," the meaning is more clear.

Thoughts?-Chris
