Hey all,

Looking forward to meeting up with all of you this sunday. I actually
wanted to propose something else in addition to, in conjunction with, or
perhaps as a substitution to the general readings. I wanted to chat about
homosociality and friendship. Take this by way of preface to my
proposition. As we know, forms of oppression manifest not just in society
'out there' but also in the way we think. So, we often need to get rid of
the fascist in our heads, as some would say it. While this is important,
oppression is not just internalized intellectually - in our thought
processes - but also physically, in the way we talk, move, gesticulate,
etc. As such, it's important that we learn how power lives on and through
our bodies. In particular, I want to examine homophobia and the way it can
live on our bodies. The readings I've attached deal with friendships
between men in a time when there wasn't the same kinds of anxiety
surrounding male-male friendships. I want to explore these themes found in
the readings all the while not displacing the body to an unexplored domain,
leaving it physically unexamined and materially untouched.

Therefore, my proposition is as following: depending on where we meet, I
would like the members of SAP who are present to pair off and go for a walk
around the block of the busiest street nearby while *holding hands*. While
walking, take notice of how you are holding hands, how you are walking,
your feelings, your self-awareness, how partner's movements and how those
affect yours. After walking around for a block, we will meet up and talk
about the readings and situate them alongside our personal and embodied
experience of holding hands with our SAP friends.

I hope everyone is into that idea.
Aylon

The first reading is short blog post about history of male-male
friendships:

The second (attached) reading is an excerpt from some of my academic work
that goes a bit more into the history of male-male friendships and talks
about race and desire.
