Hi everyone. At our meeting at Spartacus last night, we agreed to meet at
The Purple Thistle (60-975 Vernon Drive, <http://www.purplethistle.ca/>,
not wheelchair accessible) at 7pm on Wednesday to work on a banner and
posters. Matt is to bring the fabric. Bring paint if you have some. Please
come and hang out.
It was also agreed that we would invite Vikki Reynolds and Fathima Jaffer
to participate in our first event. Please find below a draft of the
invitation letter. Peter will send the invites.
We are still searching for venues. Peter will look into the Mt. Pleasant
Neighbourhood House. Usman will look into UBC. Peter and David to look into
Kiwassa and SFUPIRG (for Harbour Centre).
Next meeting is Sunday January 6 @ 4pm at Mosaic. Looking forward to seeing
you on Wednesday.
DRAFT: please feel free to comment / alter.
Hello! We are Solidarity Against Patriarchy, a group of mostly
male-identified people who are organizing to do anti-patriarchy work within
and beyond radical communities. We recognize and acknowledge interlocking
forms oppression, including but not limited to sexism, racism, colonialism,
disableism, transphobia and homophobia, classism, and speciesism. We
acknowledge that male privilege and male supremacy exist, and we want to
dismantle it both socially, culturally and individually within ourselves. We
aim to work in mutual aid while being in solidarity with those oppressed by
patriarchy, and also recognizing our own stake in dismantling this system.
Our work involves unlearning patriarchal beliefs and behaviours in their
implicit and explicit forms collectively and individually. We work through
consensus and in non-hierarchical structures. While we recognize that our
work will be within a community and cannot be done in isolation, we do not
want to burden those oppressed by patriarchy with the work of teaching us
how to dismantle our own privilege.
One form our work will take is to organize panels and other events that
feature women speaking on / about patriarchy. Our intention is to do the
"bottom line" work of finding spaces, creating and distributing promotional
material, setting up and taking down, etc. in order to make space for women
to speak.
We are writing to invite you to speak on a panel that addresses the
question, "What is solidarity against patriarchy?" What does solidarity
against patriarchy look like for you? How is it practiced? We have
tentatively scheduled the panel for Jan. 29, possibly at the Mt. Pleasant
Neighbourhood House.
We look forward to hearing from you.
In solidarity,
Solidarity Against Patriarchy (SAP)
