The End of Suburbia has sold more than 10,000 DVDs and has been aired on TV around the world. Now the documentary maker behind the celluloid hit has announced the follow up, Escape From Suburbia, exclusively to Aljazeera. Greg Greene made The End of Suburbia with editor Barry Sliverthorn, about the way the so-called American dream will be affected by an end to cheap energy. "The whole post-war American way of life ended up being centred on the suburb; the nice house with a nice lawn and the picket fence; a nice car in the drive. "It stopped being about escaping tyranny or finding democracy. Instead, it became about achieving a way of life that was propped up by cheap energy." Death of a dream Greene believes the world is entering the beginning of the end of the age of oil, a phase that will affect every aspect of human existance. "People who have bought into that American dream of an ever-growing lifestyle with ever cheaper goods and services, are going to be the most affected by the changes that are coming." Released in the spring of 2004, The End of Suburbia has been on television in Europe and Canada and is now being prepared for dubbing into Spanish. "We were pleasantly surprised. We beat all our sales targets for the DVDs and they are still flying out," says Greene. "And we have had a lot of TV stations around the world talking to us, except in the US." The timing of the release of The End of Suburbia could not have been better as oil hit the headlines during the summer of 2004. Spurred on by high prices and very tight demand, oil became a topic dripping its way into the mainstream. Global interest "TV executives who did not understand why we wanted to make a film about oil suddenly realised what was going on. As oil climbed in price, so did the interest around the world." "Every time you even see a Hollywood science fiction movie, say AI or I-Robot, the futures predicted are always energy rich" Greg Greene, documentary filmmaker As a result, Greene is now set to start filming his second film, Escape From Suburbia, hitting the same topic from a different angle. "In Escape I wanted to look at the people who really were trying to make some kind of impact over the energy question. Right now. Who were the people who had a future without cheap oil? Who were the ones who didn't want to waste any time waiting around for it to hit them? "After all, every time you even see a Hollywood science fiction movie, say AI or I-Robot, the futures predicted are always energy rich. It takes some foresight for people to actually start planning now, for a future in which we all may be energy poor." Tar sands Greene is going to cover a variety of areas in the new documentary, including recoverable oil from so-called tar sands. One of Greene's films has sold more than 10,000 DVDs "We will start by looking at a guy who is working in the booming area of the Canadian tar sands. "The desire to extract the energy from the sands in Northern Alberta has meant that there has been a great deal of expansion in these areas. "We are going to use this guy, who also works in Kuwait, to look at the situation around Opec and how their influence is changing." Cuban crucible As well as the conventional unconventionals such as tar sands, Greene is also going further afield. "We are going to take a look at the Cuban situation as regards their urban agriculture programme. "When their cheap oil imports stopped coming in from the Soviet Union, they were forced to use land in urban areas to grow food. "A lot of land was opened up to private Cuban farmers in the cities. This was in order to get around the problem of fuel becoming so much more expensive. We want to see how they managed to do it and what lessons could be taken from their experience." Not content with this level of global travel Greene has then lined up Iceland as his next stop. "Because it has one of the world's oldest alternative energy economies with its use of thermal energy. But also because there have been people trying to kick-start the hydrogen economy there. It is important to see what they have achieved and what their plans are for the future." Hydrogen sceptics But even among those people who think oil is starting its decline there is scepticism over these alternatives. Hydrogen especially is often derided as pie-in-the-sky thinking, too energy-expensive to produce on any meaningful level. "That is true. Even people who talk about things like peak oil are often sceptics about other forms of energy. We are not so concerned with that. We want to see the people who are actually making attempts." Greene says his new film will not just be about technical energy questions, it will be about the people who are trying to address them. "These are people who are anticipating massive social changes based on energy becoming much more expensive. That is what we are going to look at. Their futures, our futures, could be vastly different depending on the success or failure of their projects. Green Car Journal: Over the past several years, you have advocated the need for the auto industry to be faster in adopting new environmentally sound technologies. Do you believe the industry is continuing to move too slowly today? Carl Pope: ?The reality is there?s a whole panoply of technology available to the auto industry being used in certain models, by certain companies, which would dramatically reduce the negative environmental consequences of driving around in a car, a truck, or an SUV. And all of these vehicles can be made much less damaging by using better technology and by designing them differently. What?s very sad is, although the auto industry has demonstrated that it knows how to make fabulous cars that dramatically lessen environmental damage, it?s not willing to do that across the board. It?s not willing to give consumers real choices. Right now, in many American cities, the waiting list to get a hybrid vehicle is longer than the waiting list to get an organ transplant.? GCJ: So now automakers are seeing the success of these small hybrids and consumers are choosing them. What do you think about the idea of consumers having more vehicle choices ? now with several hybrid cars and even the first hybrid SUV? CP: ?What we?re seeing is that if you give American consumers cars that meet their needs and are environmentally sound, they will get in line to get them. What we?re seeing is that consumers want cars that have modern technology. But the American auto industry is giving consumers a limited number of vehicles that are produced on outmoded platforms using outmoded technology that in fact are more dangerous. The latest report from the Highway Traffic Safety Administration is that if you drive an SUV you are more likely be killed in an automobile accident than if you drive a sedan. They also showed there are SUVs out there that are modern, well-designed, and safe?and those SUVs also get better fuel economy. It?s all about making sure that every car in the showroom is actually a 21st century car. And the fact is, most of the cars in the showrooms today are not.? GCJ: Why do you think the U.S. auto industry may be resistant to embracing the concepts you advocate? CP: ?First, I want to acknowledge the fact that Ford Motor Company has now produced a modern SUV, the first modern SUV to come from an American manufacturer ? the new hybrid Escape. And I want to commend William Clay Ford for doing that. The challenge is going to be the marketing and the manufacturing of that car so it can really become a major part of Ford sales, and we hope he does that. ?I actually think that the American auto manufacturers are defeatist about their ability to compete with import foreign technology. For some reason, I don?t know why, they have developed a defeatist attitude that we can?t compete with the Japanese.? GCJ: Have you heard that in any statements? CP: ?They have said to us, ?We don?t want to raise the bar for all cars because if you make all cars technologically better, the Japanese will clean our clocks.? They are defeatist about their abilities. The workers are not defeatist and there?s absolutely no evidence at all that American workers can?t produce better cars than anybody in the world. Their engineers aren?t defeatist. I?ve talked to engineers with Ford and they just say if we would be turned loose, they could produce a better hybrid.? GCJ: Does this strike you as a boardroom and stockholder issue? CP: ?It is a finance room and boardroom issue. It is the finance people and the board people who are defeatist. They don?t think they can win a real race with the Japanese and we keep saying to them, ?there is no other race in the long term.? If you don?t make quality cars, you?re not going to be in business. You have no choice.? GCJ: If the auto industry were here to speak collectively on this topic, they might come back and say, ?All right, we can build them, but we don?t know if the public is aware enough about the value of this technology to really embrace it, and in fact pay for it.? CP: ?They don?t say that, actually. They all say, ?If we build small cars the public may not buy them.? But the (BMW) Mini Cooper suggests that may not be true if you design a good small car. What they tell me is this, quite explicitly, ?We don?t believe that we can compete technologically and in quality with the Japanese. We all compete for power and size because we think that?s where we have the competitive edge?.? GCJ: It would seem that your Sierra Club membership is more focused on the environment than the average auto buyer. What feedback do you have on the decision-making process that makes a Sierra Club member buy differently than an average car buyer? CP: ?The difference between our membership and the public is our members are more optimistic. They actually believe that what they buy can make a difference in the world, so they link their buying decisions more closely with the kind of world they want to see. The general public is a little more cynical and disillusioned?they don?t think they can make a difference.? GCJ: What are your imperatives regarding transportation for tomorrow? CP: ?Our imperative is progress, and progress comes in a whole bunch of different ways. I mean, you can start out just by making modest changes in a vehicle. You can go to a hybrid vehicle and in a few years go beyond the hybrid. But the main thing is you?ve got to modernize, you?ve got to invest in quality, and you?ve got to invest in technology.? GCJ: What do you think about the advertising messages that come from the automakers regarding what consumers should buy? CP: ?I think it obviously contributes to the problem. They advertise that these things are safe when in fact they know they?re not safe. And when I talk to people in the United Auto Workers, they tell me they know these are not the best vehicles to make but they?re the vehicles which make Detroit the biggest profit margin.? GCJ: What about marketing and advertising specifically directed toward educating the public on buying hybrids or other environmentally positive automobiles? CP: ?The hybrids, in a certain way, marketed themselves. Toyota is not spending that much on marketing, and when you?ve got a two year waiting list, it doesn?t make sense to put a whole lot into an advertising budget, frankly. The hybrid successes have outpaced the capacities of the assembly lines.? GCJ: How would you describe the progress of the auto industry versus other manufacturing and commercial industries today? CP: ?Well, the auto industry has done more to embrace new technology than the coal industry. But on the other hand, the auto industry has done more to increase our dependence on oil, so they have a larger moral responsibility.? GCJ: Do you have any recommendations to car buyers that would reflect the Sierra Club agenda? CP: ?I think for your family, you want safety. For your children, you want fuel economy?because you don?t want to mess up the planet. And then every car buyer has a different set of needs, so it may be that for some people the Insight is the right vehicle, for some people it?s the Prius, for some people it?s the Ford Escape. Nowadays, with modern pharmacology, mental hospitals are no longer required­the mental hospital is internalized through chemical intervention. No need for FEMA camps or "preventive detention" when we have a "medical armamentarium" of serotonin uptake inhibitors. All that is needed now is for Frist and the Republicans to devise a law defining "political paranoia" and determining that "political paranoiacs" are a threat to society. Working with Bozeman lawmakers, Barber pushed two bills that would have prevented courts from sealing information about dangerous products that had been dug up in lawsuits. Such information in the right hands may have saved his son's life. Barber came to the Queen City only to see his hopes crushed. Both bills were killed by lawmakers. Shortly afterward, Barber confronted the industry lobbyists who had worked to defeat both pieces of legislation. They simply laughed, he recalled in a recent telephone interview. "To laugh at a man who is principled, focused and dedicated is just a big mistake," he said. He may have the last laugh. Both bills have been resurrected in the 2005 session by the same lawmakers who sponsored them last time, and both said they are seeing new support for the legislation. House Bill 58, sponsored by Rep. Chris Harris, D-Bozeman, would prevent courts from sealing documents containing information about a deceptive financial practice, hazardous substance or product that is likely to cause injury. Such documents are often sealed as part of settlements in civil lawsuits. Harris argues that the public has the right to know about any dangerous products or practices that have the potential to harm people in the future. "If the real reason the company wants to settle is to keep secret a defective product, that's where we're saying 'no,'" he said. Sen. Mike Wheat, D-Bozeman, is carrying a similar bill in the other chamber. He has named it the "Gus Barber Anti-Secrecy Bill" after Barber's son, but it has yet to be assigned a bill number. Wheat's previous bill was killed in the Senate. One of the arguments made against it was there was a misplaced comma in the text, muddying the meaning. While control of the Senate has since switched parties, Wheat blamed the bill's 2003 failure more on confusion about what the bill did, and he has since gotten at least one of its opponents to change his mind. "I think people now have a better idea of what I'm trying to accomplish," he said. Representatives of various business groups argued against both bills last time, saying they failed to take into account that legal settlements are agreements between both parties, and that closed documents sometimes hide embarrassing information about the victims. Barber isn't likely to buy that argument. He found out after his son's death that the rifle's manufacturer had known for years about a defect in the trigger mechanism. He has fought for four years to get an open-documents law on the books, and his disappointment in the 2003 session hasn't blurred his focus. "I do this in my son's memory really," he said. Toyota Motor Corp. in 2004 became the first import brand to top that annual sales mark as the domestic auto industry's hold on American motorists continued to shrink. Despite slumping sales for Volkswagen, Jaguar, Isuzu and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., import brands from Asia and Europe accounted for a new high of 41.4% of the cars and light trucks sold in the U.S., according to data released by manufacturers Tuesday. Asian automakers grabbed a 34.6% share of the market. The domestic brands' collective 58.7% share ? a historic low ? was down from 65.6% just four years earlier. In all, 16.9 million cars and light trucks were sold last year, the fourth best on record. But those sales were spurred in large part by hefty inducement programs, which many in the industry believe are losing their effect. Although most major brands reported unusually strong year-end sales, General Motors Corp. saw its December sales fall from a year earlier even though it spent an average of $4,956 per vehicle in the month on incentives for dealers and customers. "Incentives aren't the whole story," said David Healy, an auto industry analyst with Burnham Securities Inc. "Companies are also bringing out some good product." For the year, the industry averaged a record $3,942 in incentive spending for each car and truck sold, according to CNW Marketing Research Inc., a Bandon, Ore., firm that monitors incentives, which can include cash, reduced financing and leasing rates and even free auto insurance. GM's 2004 sales were down 1.1% to 4.6 million passenger vehicles from 4.7 million in 2003. Ford Motor Co. saw its sales slide 4.6% despite the late introduction of several new car models and strong sales of its bestselling F-150 pickups. At DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group, sales climbed 3.7% for the year on the strength of several new models, including the 300C sedan and the Magnum sport wagon. Meantime, Toyota and Nissan Motor Co. ? companies that spend less on cash-back and other lures than the industry average ? both reported record-setting years. In fact, Nissan North America reported its best U.S. sales last year despite having the lowest incentives of any major brand, averaging $1,900 per vehicle, according to CNW. Toyota's Torrance-based U.S. arm sold 2.1 million vehicles ? with incentive spending at about two-thirds of the industry average. That spending was down slightly from 2003 levels, said Jim Press, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales USA. Press wouldn't provide figures for the company's inducements, but CNW put the company's incentive layout for the year at about $3,100 per vehicle. Toyota's annual sales increase of 10% came on the strength of a strong market for its trucks, fuel-efficient Prius hybrid and youth-oriented Scion cars. Additionally, its Camry sedan retained its title as the nation's bestselling car, topping Honda Motor Co.'s Accord sedan. Press said he didn't believe that Toyota could sustain a 10% annual growth rate in the U.S., predicting the rate this year would be somewhat below 5%. Still, that would be one of the best among major automakers. For next year, Toyota has set a global goal of 8.5 million car and truck sales. Some analysts are predicting that it could pass GM to become the world's biggest automaker. As it is, Toyota is fast eating away at Chrysler Group's hold on the No. 3 spot in the U.S. Despite its 3.7% annual sales gain for 2004, Chrysler's lead over Toyota slipped to just 146,000 vehicles from 261,000 in 2003. American Honda Motor Co.'s sales rose 3.3% for the year to 1.4 million cars and trucks. And Nissan North America, aided by full-year sales of its full-size Titan pickup, Armada SUV and other new vehicles, said combined sales of its Nissan and Infiniti brands rose 24% to 985,989 units. That boost came despite early quality problems with the Titan and other trucks coming out of Nissan's new U.S. manufacturing plant in Canton, Miss. "We had new products, a new plant and new suppliers" that combined to create noise and paint-finish problems that vexed vehicle buyers, said Jed Connelly, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Gardena-based Nissan. Nissan's scores in the closely watched Initial Quality Study published each year by J.D. Power & Associates dropped sharply for 2003. The company sent dozens of engineers to the plant to correct the problems, "and we believe we've remedied things," Connelly said. EPA Plan to Study Children?s Exposure to Chemicals at Home Sends Up Red Flags In early November, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created quite a stir among many children?s health advocates when it announced a new study, the Children's Environmental Exposure Research Study (CHEERS). CHEERS is intended to study pesticide and other home chemical impacts on children, and it includes plans to offer money and camcorders to families. On the surface, it seemed to be designed to encourage parents to expose their infants and toddlers to pesticides?and seemed to target low-income families. After a flood of opposition, the EPA postponed its study until spring 2005 to get more input from advisory bodies on the ethics and safety of CHEERS. Many continue to call for the EPA to cancel the study, though there seem to be no plans to do so. Since announcing CHEERS, EPA has clarified some issues about the study, and we are inclined to believe that the EPA honestly didn?t intend to lure poor families into a study that would cause their children to be directly exposed to dangerous chemicals. Nonetheless, there is now an atmosphere of taint around CHEERS, and there remain many concerns that are sufficient to warrant pulling the plug on this study. First, while the money offered to participants?between $770 and $970 over the course of two years?certainly won?t change anyone?s life, it does seem to veer closer to an incentive than a compensation for time spent helping gather information for the study. In addition, families are being offered T-shirts, framed certificates of appreciation and camcorders. The video recorders are to be used in part to create visual diaries for the study, but even the EPA refers to them?and to the other items?as ?gifts.? That is an incentive, and it puts a shadow over the study from the start. Second, the study will involve only 60 participants, all of them in Duval County, Florida. This is a very small sample size and a very specific area. The EPA maintains that it is soliciting participants throughout the county, and not just those in low socioeconomic areas?but even if this is true, how representative can the data be? The value of the data would be questionable enough if the EPA were targeting poor families, but if the 60 participants run the whole socioeconomic range, the data will be even less likely to be applicable to nationwide strategies for chemical exposure risk reduction. Finally, $2.1 million of the funding for the study is coming from the American Chemistry Council. Given the nature of this study, it looks suspiciously like an effort by the chemical industry to use the EPA to find out how much exposure to pesticides and other chemicals is ?acceptable.? Instead of allowing industry interests to direct its research priorities, the EPA should be doing all it can to reduce children's exposure to toxins through education and prevention efforts. "The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear," a 3 - hour historical film by Adam Curtis recently aired by the British Broadcasting Corp., (BBC) argues coherently that much of what we have been told about the threat of international terrorism "Is a Fantasy that has been Exaggerated and Distorted by politicians. It is a dark illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the security services and the international media." Stern stuff, indeed. But consider just a few of the many questions the program poses along the way: ? If Osama bin Laden does, in fact, head a vast international terrorist organization with trained operatives in more than 40 countries, as claimed by Bush, why, despite torture of prisoners, has this administration failed to produce hard evidence of it? ? How can it be that in Britain since 9/11, 664 people have been detained on suspicion of terrorism but only 17 have been found guilty, most of them with no connection to Islamist groups and none who were proven members of Al Qaeda? ? Why have we heard so much frightening talk about "dirty bombs" when experts say it is panic rather than radioactivity that would kill people? ? Why did Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claim on "Meet the Press" in 2001 that Al Qaeda controlled massive high-tech cave complexes in Afghanistan, when British and U.S. military forces later found no such thing? Of course, the documentary does not doubt that an embittered, well-connected and wealthy Saudi man named Osama bin Laden helped finance various affinity groups of Islamist fanatics that have engaged in terror, including the 9/11 attacks. Nor does it challenge the notion that a terrifying version of fundamentalist Islam has led to gruesome spates of violence throughout the world. But the film, both more sober and more deeply provocative than Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," directly challenges the conventional wisdom by making a powerful case that the Bush administration, led by a tight-knit cabal of Machiavellian neoconservatives, has seized upon the false image of a unified international terrorist threat to replace the expired Soviet empire in order to push a political agenda. Terrorism is deeply threatening, but it appears to be a much more fragmented and complex phenomenon than the octopus-network image of Al Qaeda, with Bin Laden as its head, would suggest. The fact is, despite the efforts of several government commissions and a vast army of investigators, we still do not have a credible narrative of a "war on terror" that is being fought in the shadows. Consider, for example, that neither the 9/11 commission nor any court of law has been able to directly take evidence from the key post-9/11 terror detainees held by the United States. Everything we know comes from two sides that both have a great stake in exaggerating the threat posed by Al Qaeda: The terrorists themselves and the military and intelligence agencies that have a vested interest in maintaining the facade of an overwhelmingly dangerous enemy. When you are an Outlaw, your body (just like everybody else's) may be subject to the dictates of bureaucrats, armed enforcers and various elected fixers, controllers, connivers, pork-barrellers, socializers, corporatizers, fear-mongers, cigar-sexers, bribe-takers, old-boy-networkers and global influence peddlers. But when you are an Outlaw, your heart and mind (unlike most everybody else's) are your own. What exactly does that mean, though, in this over-lawed, over-ruled, over-executive-ordered world? Let's go back for a moment to the statement that you're already a criminal. I've said it before and it always offends somebody: "YOU may be a criminal, Wolfe. But I'M a law-abiding citizen. Don't paint me with your black brush." Well, sorry. You may not already be an Outlaw. But definitely you are already a criminal. You can't help but be. In The Tyranny of Good Intentions, Paul Craig Roberts and Lawrence M. Stratton write: The U.S. Code, which contains all federal statutes, occupies 56,009 single-spaced pages. Its 47 volumes take up nine feet of shelf space. An annotated version, which attempts to bring order out of chaos, is three feet long and has 230 hardcover volumes and 36 paperback supplements. Administrative lawmaking under statutes fill up the 207-volume Code of Federal Regulations, which spans 21 feet of shelf space and contains more than 134,488 pages of regulatory law. Federal law is further augmented by more than 2,756 volumes of judicial precedent, taking up 160 yards of law library shelving. And you're certain you re not breaking one of those laws? During the Clinton years alone, as James Bovard noted in Feeling Your Pain, Federal agencies issued more than 25,000 new regulations criminalizing everything from reliable toilets to snuff advertisements on race cars. And Bovard wrote that before Clinton's final year in office, when the federal government issued more than 100,000 pages of new regulations. That s just federal. Let s not even mention the states. Still think you re not a criminal? Really. So you ve never: forgotten to report a little extra income on your 1040, built an addition on your house without a permit, driven without a seatbelt (the Supreme Court says cops can throw you in jail for that), given a glass of dinner wine to your 17-year-old, smoked a joint, disconnected a pollution control device on your car, cut a friend's hair without a license, installed an outlaw toilet, carried a pocket knife with a blade longer-than-legal (bet you don't even know what length is legal, do you?), been in a room where friends were talking about doing something illegal (conspiracy!), put a dollar in a football pool, patronized a prostitute, taken a tax deduction you really weren't entitled to, lied to a bureaucrat, willfully failed to file, built a pipe-bomb just to watch it go boom, carried money with traces of cocaine on it (like some 82 percent of the paper money in circulation today), put prescription medicine into one of those little daily dispenser containers, given one of your own prescription pills to a sick friend (search Title 21 of the U.S. Code and just see if you can figure out exactly what you can and can't do with that itty-bitty bottle of Zoloft or Prozac you depend on to help you survive this modern madness), owned chemicals that might be used in bomb making (like the bleach and ammonia bottles under your kitchen sink), transposed the digits of your Social Security Number on a government form, or driven in a car with someone who might have been transporting contraband. Ever? Remember, these days you can be convicted of conspiracy for crimes you don't even know about, or for buying legal items that might be used for illegal causes. Some acquaintance gets in trouble and needs to snitch on a friend to get his own sentence reduced and you're toast. You can even be convicted of violating laws that don't exist as plenty of tax criminals have been. Ask the IRS for copies of the laws you're allegedly breaking and they ll respond with legalistic gobbledegook. I have a friend who once testified as an expert witness in a tax case. Her expertise? Grammar. On the stand, she diagrammed a mega-monster sentence from the tax code and proved the alleged regulation couldn't be obeyed because it literally had no meaning in the English language. Still, people get arrested for disobeying it. Those are just a few of the ways individuals can get in trouble. Heaven forbid you should own a business and try to get through the day without committing a crime. For example, while Your Father in Washington still permits you, you lucky little person, to disconnect the crazy-making doodad that goes bingidy-bing-bing when you leave your car keys in the ignition and open the door, it's a federal crime for your car dealer to disconnect it at your request. Like, whose car do they think it is, anyway? Well, actually, it's not a federal crime to disconnect only the part that goes bingidy-bing-bing when you open the door and leave your key in the ignition, but it is a federal crime to disconnect the part that goes bingidy-bing-bing when you unhook your seatbelt and leave your key in the ignition, which is all part of the same system but a different set of wires from the other one. (Are you following this? There won't be a test, but there could be a hefty fine later.) Oh yeah, by the way, before you unhook the thing yourself, you d better check your state law. You wouldn't want the state-o-crats SWAT team swooping down on you when you're armed only with a pair of wirecutters. Bottom line. You are no longer a law-abiding citizen. There are too many laws to abide. And it doesn t matter whether they call em laws, rules, regulations, or something else altogether. You break them every day. With laws like these, who even wants to be a law-abiding citizen? When you put yourself at the service of rules and diktats of this nature, you put your life in thrall to the kind of people who make them. Even if you're a member of the infamous Snopes clan, you re bound to be better at figuring out how to live your own life than people who sit around all day cooking up stuff like this and figuring out how severely to punish you if you don't obey. In the science fiction novel Pallas, one of L. Neil Smith's characters says, People pardon me, journalists and politicians have often accused me of believing that I'm above the law. And yet, who isn't? The law is created by demonstrable criminals, enforced by demonstrable criminals, interpreted by demonstrable criminals, all for demonstrably criminal purposes. Of course I'm above the law. And so are you. Amen, bruthah Neil. So why not enjoy being above the law? Why not embrace it? Why not do it with panache? Flair? Savoir faire? Pride and shining resolution? Why not, in short, free your Inner Outlaw? For this is what divides the Outlaw D.B. Cooper, Bonnie and Clyde, Robin Hood, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro from the mere criminal the creep who steals your CD player or the furniture out of the White House. Or the person who breaks the same old everyday laws you do, but breaks them in a sniveling, sneaking, guilt-ridden way, rather than with a jaunty shrug. Attitude. Attitude. Attitude. Don t let me give you the wrong idea. You don't have to start holding up IRS offices and distributing the proceeds to starving taxpayers to be an Outlaw. Whatever crimes you re already committing will do. The essence of free Outlawry is the way you live in the face of growing tyranny the Outlaw way you think. Even when it s the government that s committing the real crimes, being an Outlaw comes in handy. Some examples: You go into a doctor s office a year from now and they tell you, Sorry, Comrade. Thanks to federal privacy protection, you can no longer get medical care unless you accept a unique identifying number and consent to have your medical records shared with anyone the government wants to see them. The good little citizen, sick, vulnerable, overwhelmed and puzzled, submits. The Outlaw? The Outlaw has already prepared for this and, depending on the kind of Outlaw he is, has options. Maybe he meekly submits, also using one of his five pre-built identities. Maybe he knows an Outlaw doctor who trades services for cash. Maybe he makes such a stink threatening to bring a civil rights suit that the doctor decides she'd rather risk the wrath of U.S. Health and Human Services than the wrath of a mad patient who knows his rights (and a good lawyer). You re driving along minding your own business when you find yourself in the middle of a checkpoint. Who knows what they're trolling for today? Drugs, booze, seatbelt crimes or perhaps just Your papers, please (an insurance checkpoint). A cop comes to your window and although his words say please and may we? his tone says, Cross me, muhfuh, and you'll be on your face in the gravel with my knee jabbing a hole in your kidney. Where are you going? he asks. Where are you traveling from? What's that in the back seat? Who helped you load your pickup? Do you mind if we search your vehicle? The good little citizen, once again, submits. The Outlaw, once again, has options. That might mean anything from playing dumb and innocent ( I m sorry, officer, are you sure it's okay for you to do this? My high school civics teacher told me they absolutely couldn't do things like this in America. You seem like a nice young man and I'd hate to see you get in trouble.) to calmly refusing any consent to search to covertly making note of all officers badge numbers, names, and descriptions for possible later use. (You know, like maybe sending them a copy of the Constitution.) The Outlaw doesn't always emerge victorious from encounters with authority. Bonnie, Clyde, and John Dillinger ended up with their bullet-riddled bodies on public display, after all. You really might end up with your face in the gravel and your nether portions in a world of hurt if the nice officer is having a Justin Volpe moment and thinks you're Abner Louima. Refuse to allow a random search of your vehicle, for instance and, as Boston T. Party describes in You and the Police, a drug dog and handler may be brought to the scene. The handler strokes a baggie of marijuana in his pocket then touches the trunk of your car. The dog goes wild and voila! instant probable cause. (Or the dog simply sniffs you, and the almost inevitable traces of cocaine on your federal reserve notes lead to a shake-down and the forfeiture of all the cash you re carrying.) Government ruthlessness is a giant purple rhinoceros standing in the path between you and the free enjoyment of Outlawry. It s a rabid rhino. With a cyanide-tipped horn. It s rutting season and it thinks you're competition. It s got a thorn in its little hoofie. In general, it's having a really, really, really bad day. Yes, resistance to arbitrary power is dangerous. Let's nobody kid herself about that. But resistance is not futile. In most cases, being an Outlaw doesn t mean attracting attention to yourself. It simply means living, as much as possible, as you wish. More important, it means having the mindset needed to live that way in a world of adversity. More often than confronting, it means ignoring or evading insane and excessive rules. When confrontation is necessary, it means having the knowledge, preparation, and once again attitude to help you get through the situation without either passively submitting or going unproductively postal. In practice, that means something different for every Outlaw. But in every case, it means you have an attitude of self ownership (or, if you prefer, of belonging to God), not being the natural subject, and easy target, of any bureaucrat or badge-bearer who wishes to push you around. It means recognizing the pathetic state of law and justice around you, and recognizing its dangers but resolving to live your life more like a free American than a Stalinist peasant, regardless. It means living by your own highest moral and ethical choices, rather than trying to tippy-toe around every persnicketing regulation in every obscure book in every cubbyhole governmental office. It means remembering that this is still our America. Not theirs. It means remembering that you are still a human being with potential beyond anything those who want to put us all into tight little categories and boxes and prison cells! could ever conceive. It means knowing every day that, despite the chains and travails of too much government, and their very real threats to your security, your heart and mind remain free. It means you belong to yourself. That you think for yourself. That you have higher values than any do-gooder, lobbyist, congressthing, corrupt cop, or midnight raider will ever give you credit for. But that's okay. Because it s not their approval you re looking for. Freedom is what you re looking for. And you re only going to find that by being determined to live it. Arnold Schwarzenegger decided there's a weapon that's too dangerous to be in the hands of private citizens. This past week, a new law went into effect in California banning that weapon. It's the .50-caliber rifle, the Rolls Royce of sniper rifles. It's a big gun, a favorite of armies around the world, and it's still available in 49 states in this country to anyone over 18 with a clean record. It is, without a doubt, the most powerful weapon you can buy. And, as Correspondent Ed Bradley reports, it's powerful enough to kill a man or pierce armor from more than a mile away. A Senate report said that a bullet from a .50-caliber rifle, even at 1.5 miles, crashes into a target with more energy than a bullet fired at point-blank range from Dirty Harry's famous .44 Magnum. The .50-caliber rifle, one of the world's best combat weapons, was invented 22 years ago in Murfreesboro, Tenn., by Ronnie Barrett. How did he come up with the idea? "I was just a 26-year-old kid, and didn't know any better," he says. But he knew enough to design a weapon that today is used by the armed forces of 35 different countries. He showed 60 Minutes a semi-automatic 82A1 rifle. "This was the first rifle that I designed, and has been our most popular rifle," he says. "This is the one that the United States Army ordered. Matter of fact, this is a U.S. Army rifle here." Even though the .50-caliber rifle is a military-grade weapon, federal gun laws treat it like any other hunting rifle, and Barrett can sell the gun to civilians. He says he needs to, because military sales vary widely from year to year. "If it weren't for the civilian sales, I wouldn't be here. There's a lot of defense contractors that would not be here," says Barrett. He has sold thousands of .50-caliber rifles to private citizens who, he says, want the guns for target shooting and big game hunting. But he scoffs at critics who claim that .50-caliber rifles are too dangerous in the hands of civilians. "The .50 has an excellent record. You know, as far as the abuses with .50-caliber rifles, they are so few, if any, that all other calibers ought to aspire to have as good a record as it has," says Barrett. "And it's a long rifle. When you hear people say it's a criminal's weapon, this is 5-and-a-half feet tall, or something like that. This is not a weapon that a criminal would use." It's not convenience store robberies that worry Tom Diaz, a gun control advocate who was an expert witness in the California campaign to ban the gun. Diaz says the .50-caliber rifle made by Barrett and other manufacturers is a menace in the hands of terrorists. "This gun is designed and built to smash things up and to set things on fire," says Diaz. "It's a battlefield weapon. Yet it is sold as freely on the American civilian market as a .22 bolt action rifle." What's wrong with Barrett's product? "I'm glad Ronnie Barrett makes his rifle for our military forces. I think it's a great thing on the battlefield," says Diaz. "I just think that there are certain occasions when we say in our society, this product is such a threat to our health and safety, and in this case, our national security, we will not allow it." But isn't any gun in the hands of a terrorist a threat? "Well of course any gun is. But it is a gun that is unparalleled by any other small arm available to civilians," says Diaz. "We control every other kind of weapon of war you can think of - machine guns, plastic explosives, rockets. But this thing has flown under the radar for about 20 years." Why would you need a weapon this powerful if you're not fighting a war? "It's a target rifle. It's a toy," says Barrett. "It's a high-end adult recreational toy. Any rifle in the hands of a terrorist is a deadly weapon." But New York City's Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the .50-caliber rifle is in a class by itself. He agreed to show 60 Minutes just how powerful the .50 caliber is. First, a police sharpshooter fired the NYPD's own .30 caliber sniper rifle at a steel target. Downrange, three football fields away, the three shots from the .30 caliber rifle bounced off the half-inch thick steel. "You can see it hasn't penetrated it," says Kelly. Then the sharpshooter fired three rounds from a Barrett .50-caliber rifle at the same target. "Went right through," says Kelly. "It is clearly a weapon of war, a round to be used in a wartime situation. It's appropriate for the military. The effective range is about 2,000 yards. It's a very formidable weapon." In other words, if the NYPD's range had been 20 football fields long, instead of three, the .50-caliber rifle - firing ordinary ammunition -- still would have been devastatingly effective. "Clearly, it is a very powerful weapon. We saw what it could do as far as going through armor," says Kelly. "It would be a weapon that could do a lot of damage - no question about that." This is exactly what the FBI learned in 1993 at Waco when Branch Davidians fired a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle at them. In response, the FBI deployed Bradley fighting vehicles for protection. But even that wasn't sufficient, and heavier armor was brought in. What happened at Waco was one of the arguments made for banning the weapon in California. Other states are now considering a similar ban for fear of potential terrorist attacks. "If you go through virtually any industrial state, you'll see right off the highways all kinds of highly toxic and or flammable materials stored in big tanks. These are ideal targets," says Diaz. "The point is you can plan your attack from a longer distance. It's the combination of range and power." The standard .50-caliber bullet is four times heavier than the 30-caliber bullet, and 10 times heavier than the M16 bullet. In addition to the standard .50-caliber bullet, some bullets are designed to pierce armor, some to set things on fire. Those are all legal to buy. But the most devastating .50-caliber bullet is an armor-piercing, incendiary and explosive round sometimes called Raufoss, after the company that makes it. Barrett says he's not concerned about Raufoss because it's illegal. "It's a high-explosive round," he says. "It's not available commercially. I can't even buy it." In fact, 60 Minutes found a number of sites on the Internet that claimed to be selling the explosive Raufoss ammunition. On one site, it witnessed someone making an apparent transaction of the illegal round. Barrett said he was surprised. "If it is out there and if someone other than our military has it, then it is stolen," he says. "And those people need to be prosecuted. We have laws against that. Passing additional laws, you know, is just a redundancy." But, according to Diaz, the threat posed by legal ammunition is frightening enough. There are many potential targets, he says, but the most obvious is commercial aviation. "Do I believe I could shoot an aircraft at altitude? Of course not, but on takeoff and landing, I could take you to places in Washington, D.C., where I'm absolutely certain you could shoot an aircraft with one of these guns," says Diaz. "Clearly, with the range that it has, and the impact capability that it has, it would put an airliner or an airplane at risk if it hit that plane," adds Kelly. Could the gun be used by a terrorist to shoot down a commercial airliner? "It'd be very difficult. It would if it were a tactic that were even remotely possible," says Barrett. "Then our military, who happens to use the rifle, would be training their troops to do such." But in his sales brochures, Barrett advertises the .50-caliber as a weapon that can take planes down. "There's some military brochures that we had early on that showed that you could damage aircraft on a runway or Scud missiles and things like that," says Barrett. "Yes, you could if you have a parked target." But not in the air? "That's correct," says Barrett. Just this past year, the Rand Corporation released a report identifying 11 potential terrorist scenarios involving Los Angeles International Airport. In one scenario, "a sniper using a .50-caliber rifle fires at parked and taxiing aircraft." The report concludes: "We were unable to identify any truly satisfactory solutions" for such an attack. Diaz told 60 Minutes about other much more specific scenarios in which terrorists might use the weapon, which we chose not to broadcast. "I consider some of the stuff Tom Diaz lays out irresponsible," says Barrett. "I know a lot of things, but I'm not going to go on the television and tell people what the capabilities of equipment are and possibly give ideas to people." Is what Diaz is saying accurate? "Yes, it could be. But it also, seeming begging someone to commit this crime. Somebody please commit this crime so I can validate what I've been saying so long," says Barrett. "And it's repeated over and over, and I fear that somebody will answer that call." Diaz disagrees. "Its kind of a classic gun-industry argument," he says. "First, they deny there's a problem and then when something happens, they point the finger at people who tried to warn about it and say you guys caused this and you just hoped it would happen." Federal agencies responsible for preventing terrorist attacks declined to be interviewed about the .50-caliber rifle. But last June, the Department of Homeland Security told the Dallas Morning News, "We remain concerned about any weapon of choice that could potentially be used by a terrorist, including a .50-caliber rifle." "Any rifle could be used to engage a target that it might stand a chance of hitting, of course," says Barrett. "You know, you don't want to shoot any high-speed projectile at an airplane. It's illegal." "A terrorist is not concerned about what's legal or not," says Bradley. "That's correct," says Barrett. "And a terrorist is not concerned if you pass, or Tom Diaz passes, another law." Diaz wants Congress to pass a law requiring, at a minimum, records to be kept of who's buying .50-caliber rifles. "The real question here is we do not know who has these terribly destructive rifles," says Diaz. "No one in the United States government knows who has these guns." "Aren't records kept when a gun is sold," asks Bradley. "The answer is no," says Diaz. Under the Brady Bill, sales records of guns used to be kept for 90 days, which enabled the FBI to check the names of gun purchasers against terror watch lists. The Mujahideen commander further said that 13 more Americans were captured last night in a well planned and executed ambush. The Americans brought in a large helicopter to clear the casualties. IN RAMADI: Fierce fighting erupted Tuesday between Mujahideen and the American occupiers in Ramadi. Fighting started at 15:00 and lasted for about five hours. Islam Memo is reporting that eye witnesses said the battle resulted in the complete destruction of an entire American convoy consisting of 30 different mechanized vehicles that reportedly killed 128 Americans. An Apache helicopter was also shot down and Mujahideen seized 89 pieces of weapons, tens of bullet proof vests, helmets. Fifty seven fighters were martyred in the battle, including a woman Mujahid. Islam Memo's correspondent talked to one of the Mujahideen Commanders on the battle ground about the casualties on the American side in an effort to verify the reports of eye witnesses. The Commander expressed dismay about the Al Arabiya News Agency because they were in the area but elected not to document the events on video or otherwise. He confirmed the casualty figures and warned against underestimating the ability and resolve of the Mujahideen. The Commander said "every time we announce an operation in our territory, the reaction of those whose Imaan and trust in Allah is very weak are skeptical as if America is a god that must be worshiped and believed". The commander continued to say that "we want to invite those who are skeptical to our battles to see for themselves and report what they see, not what the Americans are telling them. When they visit our battle zones, they will be convinced that Allah's soldiers always have the upper hand, Alhamdulillah, we do not want Islam Memo or any other news agency to take our side, we just want them to report the truth as they see it." IN BASRA: A British armored vehicle was attacked with two, anti tank rockets, in the middle of Basra city at about 17:00 yesterday evening. The vehicle was destroyed and all three Brits on board were reportedly killed. IN QAIM: Mujahideen carried out an attack against an American patrol boat on the Euphrates river near Al-Hadithiah city. The boat was destroyed and all of its crew members were killed. This was the second time in one week that Mujahideen have targeted boats. This tactic has been adopted due to the increasing reliance of the Americans on boats to avoid being on surface roads where Mujahideen attacks are continue to rage nonstop. In the meantime, a Mujahideen sniper gunned down an American soldier in Al-Qaim city around noon Tuesday. No further details were available. . IN AL-MUSHAIDAH: An American convoy consisting of several mechanized vehicles and US soldiers on foot was ambushed around 10:15 Tuesday morning. The owner of a moving company called Urban Moving Systems suddenly upped and moved back to Israel abandoning his business for no apparent reason. The imprisonment of Israelis, mostly all believed to be Mossad agents, was all down to their suspicious behaviour. Shady enough behaviour to warrant the FBI to look into the 'business' of these people and arrest them. But what is even more suspicious is the way in which they were quietly released, with minimum fanfare and deported back to Israel. The five celebrating Israelis aren't the only ones arrested for their dubious behaviour. In October of 2002 in Plymouth, PA, a restaurant manager reported on three movers who were caught dumping furniture near his place. When he approached the driver, later identified as Moshe Elmakias, the man fled the scene. The manager made a note of the trucks sign, 'Moving Systems Incorporated' and called the police. The truck was later spotted by the police. The two other movers, identified as Israelis Ayelet Reisler and Ron Katar began to act strangely enough for the police to search the truck and find a video which revealed footage of Chicago with zoomed in shots of the infamous Sears Tower. Falsified travel logs and fake paperwork were also found on the Israelis. When pressed for the name and number of the customer they were supposedly moving his furniture for, they were not able to provide them. On October 10th, 2001 news broadcaster CNN made a brief mention of a scuppered bomb plot in Mexico promising to bring more details as the story unraveled. But that was the last time the TV network station ever reported on the story. But over in Mexico the foiled bomb threat was headline news and was posted on the official website of the Mexican Justice Department. Two terror suspects were caught in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies; in their possession were nine hand grenades, a high powered gun and C-4 plastic explosives. The two men arrested were Salvador Gerson Sunke, a Mexican Jew, and Sar ben Zui, a colonel with the Israeli special forces, aka MOSSAD. Also found in their possession were false Pakistani passports. But like previous cases involving Israelis, the story disappeared from the press and the two men were released and deported back to Israel, very quietly and very top secret. An investigative report by the news service La Voz de Aztlan revealed that plenty was going on behind closed doors. Stories of Israelis being arrested by law enforcers are widespread and plenty with one common theme - they all get released and deported back to Israel with no charges filed against them. Furthermore, if one casts their mind a few years back the Mossad 'warned' that some 200 Al-Qaeda members were planning major attacks in the U.S. Three years on and not one of these Al Qaeda members has been arrested nor found. "His lips are moving," they said in unison, completing one of what may be thousands of standard lawyer jokes. But while that rib and several others on barristers got some giggles from the crowd, the attorney standing in line about five people ahead wasn't laughing. " 'Shut up,' the man shouted," Lanzisera said. "'I'm a lawyer.'" The attorney reported Kash and Lanzisera to court personnel, who arrested the men and charged them with engaging in disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. "They put the handcuffs on us, brought us into a room, frisked us, sat us down and checked our driver's licenses to see if there were any warrants out for our arrest," Lanzisera said yesterday. "They were very nasty, extremely nasty." The men are founders of Americans for Legal Reform, a group of outspoken advocates who use confrontational tactics to push for greater access to courts for the public and to monitor how well courts serve the public. One tactic is driving a truck around the Huntington area emblazoned with the slogan "Stop The Lawyer Disease." They said their rights to free speech were violated Monday. But Dan Bagnuola, a spokesman for the Nassau courts, said the men were causing a stir and that their exercise of their First Amendment rights to free speech was impeding the rights of others at the court. "They were being abusive and they were causing a disturbance," Bagnuola said. "They were making general comments to the people on line, referring to them as 'peasants,' and they were causing a disturbance. And they were asked on several occasions to act in an orderly manner, not to interfere with the operation of the court." Bagnuola said he did not have the name of the lawyer who complained to officers. Kash said he and Lanzisera were merely saying out loud that the public was being treated like peons or peasants while attorneys, who wave their security passes to court officers and don't have to stand on line, are treated like kings. The ruling by U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd clears the way for a federal trial scheduled to begin next month in Utica in which seven alleged Hells Angels members and associates, including several from the Capital Region, face drug-trafficking charges. The use of satellite tracking devices has stirred controversy and Hurd's ruling differs from a decision last spring by a Nassau County Court judge, who decided police needed a warrant when they used the technology to follow a burglary suspect. The biker case broke open here last year with a series of raids and arrests across upstate New York. The case began in Utica, but was expanded to include an organized crime task force that spent more than a year building a methamphetamine-trafficking case against a group of alleged outlaw bikers from Troy to Arizona. During surveillance of the group, detectives attached a global positioning satellite device to a vehicle driven by Robert P. Moran Jr., an Oneida County attorney and Hells Angels associate with a law office in Rome. They put the device on Moran's car for two days in July 2003 after he returned from a one-day trip to Arizona, where police say he purchased a large quantity of methamphetamine. Over those two days, Moran drove across New York state and allegedly made drug deals with suspected Hells Angels members in places such as New York City and Troy, according to court records. Hurd opined that authorities wouldn't need a warrant had they decided to follow Moran, so using a GPS device was merely a simpler way to track his car "as it traveled on the public highways," he wrote. "Moran had no expectation of privacy in the whereabouts of his vehicle on a public roadway. Thus, there was no search or seizure and no Fourth Amendment implications in the use of the GPS device." Hurd's ruling follows a line of reasoning that's widely supported by many law enforcement agencies. Police contend using tracking devices is no different than if they followed a suspect's vehicle in their own cars or by using helicopters. Kevin Mulroy, Moran's attorney, said the issue, which has brought conflicting rulings across the nation, is unsettling. "I think it's something the Supreme Court of the United States is going to have to hear," said Mulroy, a Syracuse attorney who was formerly an Onondaga County Court judge and assistant prosecutor. "One would think that before the police could install devices on your property, to monitor your movements, they would need a court order." A similar controversy arose in Washington two years ago, when that state's Supreme Court determined police had the right to attach a satellite tracking device to a murder suspect's car, but only after obtaining a warrant. Detectives attached a GPS device to the man's car for almost three weeks. When they downloaded the data, it indicated he had driven to an isolated area north of Spokane. Police searched the area and found the body of the man's 9-year-old daughter. He later was convicted of her murder, and the verdict was upheld. GPS devices are increasingly becoming a tool for law enforcement. Still, their use has been controversial because police agencies are not routinely obtaining court orders to install the devices, which rely on orbiting satellites and cellular phone networks to pinpoint their target. In many states, law enforcement agencies also are using them for less surreptitious missions, such as tracking sex offenders and parolees who are enrolled in electronic monitoring programs. It's not clear what effect Hurd's decision will have on their use, but it's apparently the first federal ruling regarding GPS devices and the need for search warrants. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Grable, who is prosecuting Moran and the others, did not return a telephone call for comment. The use of GPS devices by police most recently made national news in the Laci Peterson case. Scott Peterson, the Modesto, Calif., woman's husband, was convicted of murdering her on Christmas Eve 2002. In that case, police obtained a court order to attach tracking devices to three vehicles driven by Peterson, who drove to a waterfront near where the bodies of his wife and the baby boy she was carrying were later found. While the GPS data was admitted in the Peterson case, courts across the country are tackling the issue as defense lawyers challenge their reliability and whether police have a right to install them without a warrant. Similar technology helps police track cellular telephones, which also are being used by police to find fugitives and others. Kofi Annan's resignation, however, will not cure these ills; it will only mask the real problems, while providing the appearance of reform. Were Kofi to step down, U.N. critics would celebrate their victory, and the institution would go about selecting a new person to correct all the problems that have come to light. The spotlight would be focused on the new Secretary-General, who would get a pass for two or three years, while he assembles his own staff and puts his executive stamp on the operation. During this honeymoon period, public outrage would be put on hold. With Kofi in office, he has a big target on his back. He is the responsible person. He is the symbol of U.N. corruption and incompetence. Every time he steps in front of a TV camera, the audience must think about the horrible scandals that are now being investigated. A new Secretary-General would not evoke the same reaction. Kofi Annan is not the problem at the U.N. He is nothing more than the public face on the consequences of structural flaws in the institution, which spawn the corruption, incompetence and ineffectiveness that is now being revealed in the current scandals. Kofi Annan has done more in recent months to wake up Americans than the John Birch Society did in twenty years. Kofi should remain in office while the various investigations of the oil-for-food scandal unfold. He should be in front of the camera as the various U.N. sex offenders are exposed and brought to justice. If he is driven from office, he will slink into the shadows and avoid the public scrutiny of the corruption his eight-year-reign has allowed to occur. A new Secretary-General cannot correct the inherent problems at the U.N. He can only deflect the spotlight of public attention and, perhaps, shake up the staff for a while, until a new bureaucracy can rebuild their own little kingdoms into the next round of misdeeds. Among the fundamental structural problems at the U.N. is the absence of accountability. The U.N. is accountable to no one. There is no higher authority. In the United States, the government is accountable to the people who elect the people who hire the bureaucracy; no one elects anyone at the U.N. The U.N. bureaucracy is supposed to act in response to the General Assembly, most of whose delegates are in New York, essentially at the expense of the U.N. They are not about to risk losing their gravy-train by opposing the Secretariat. The majority of the Security Council is appointed for short terms. We now know that four of the permanent member-nations of the Security Council were recipients of profits from the oil-for-food scandal. These people are accountable to no one. The U.N. is beyond reform. Kofi should finish his term in office and then be turned out to the pasture of shame, carrying the legacy that his reign at the U.N. was its last. The United States has propped up this useless institution for sixty years. It's time for the U.S. to pull the plug, and find a new way to interface with the international community, on American terms. Time and time again, the U.S. has yielded the principles of freedom in order to accommodate the wishes of the collectivist majority at the U.N. Foolishness. No more. America is a great nation because it is built upon the principles of freedom. Those same principles will work for any nation willing to employ them. America should be about advancing those principles in the world, and not about appeasing the critics of those principles. Kofi Annan built, and feathered his nest at the U.N. If you're caught speeding or playing your music too loud, or other crimes for which you might receive a citation, Green Bay police officers will ask for your drivers license and your finger. You'll be fingerprinted right there on the spot. The fingerprint appears right next to the amount of the fine. Police say it's meant to protect you - - in case the person they're citing isn't who they claim to be. But not everyone is sold on that explanation. "What we've seen happen for the last couple of years [is] increasing use of false or fraudulent identification documents," Captain Greg Urban said. Police say they want to prevent the identity theft problem that Milwaukee has, where 13 percent of all violators give a false name. But in Green Bay, where police say they only average about five cases in a year, drivers we talked with think the new policy is extreme. "That's going too far," Ken Scherer from Oconto said. "You look at the ID, that's what they're there for. Either it's you or it's not. I don't think that's a valid excuse." "I would feel uncomfortable but I would do it," Carol Pilgrim of Green Bay said. The most common is conquest by war. In time, though, this method usually falls, because the captives hate the captors and rise up and drive them out if they can. Much force is needed to maintain control, making it expensive for the conquering nation. A second method is by religion, where men are convinced they must give their captors part of their earnings as "obedience to God." Such a captivity is vulnerable to philosophical exposure or by overthrow by armed force, since religion by its nature lacks military force to regain control, once its captives become "disillusioned." The third method can be called economic conquest. It takes place when nations are placed under "tribute" without the use of visible force or coercion, so that the victims do not realize they have been conquered. "Tribute" is collected from them in the form of "legal" debts and taxes, and they believe they are paying it for their own good, for the good of others, or to protect all from some enemy. Their captors become their "benefactors" and "protectors." Although this is the slowest to impose, it is often quite long-lasting, as the captives do not see any military force arrayed against them, their religion is left more or less intact, they have freedom to speak and to travel, and they participate in "elections" for their rulers. Without realizing it, they are conquered, and the instruments of their own society are used to transfer their wealth to their captors and make the conquest complete. In 1900 the average American worker paid few taxes and had little debt. Last year payments on debts and taxes took more than half of what he earned. Is it possible a form of conquest has been imposed on our people? Read the following pages and decide for yourself. BILLIONS for the BANKERS - DEBTS for the PEOPLE Americans, living in what is called the richest nation on earth, seem always to be short of money. Wives are working in unprecedented numbers, husbands hope for overtime hours to earn more, or take part-time jobs evenings and weekends, children look for odd jobs for spending money, the family debt climbs higher, and psychologists say one of the biggest causes of family quarrels and breakups is "arguments over money." Much of this trouble can be traced to our present "debt-money" system. Too few Americans realize why Christian Statesmen wrote into Article I of the U.S. Constitution: "Congress shall have the Power to Coin Money and Regulate the Value Thereof." They did this, as we will show, in prayerful hope it would prevent "love of money" from destroying the Republic they had founded. We shall see how subversion of Article I and violation of God's Law on interest has brought on us the evil of which God's Word had warned. Adequate Money Supply Needed An adequate supply of money is indispensable to civilized society. We could forego many other things, but without money industry would grind to a halt, farms would become only self-sustaining units, surplus food would disappear, jobs requiring the work of more than one man or one family would remain undone, shipping and large movements of goods would cease, hungry people would plunder and kill to remain alive, and all government except family or tribe would cease to function. An overstatement, you say? Not at all. Money is the blood of civilized society, the means of all commercial trade except simple barter. It is the measure and the instrument by which one product is sold and another purchased. Remove money or even reduce the supply below that which is necessary to carry on current levels of trade. and the results are catastrophic. For an example, we need only look at America's Depression of the early 1930's. The Bankers Depression Of The 1930's In 1930 America did not lack industrial capacity, fertile farm land, skilled and willing workers or industrious farm families. It had an extensive and highly efficient transportation system in railroads, road networks, and inland and ocean waterways. Communications between regions and localities were the best in the world, utilizing telephone, Teletype, radio, and a well-operated government mail system. No war had ravaged the cities or the countryside, no pestilence weakened the population, nor had famine stalked the land. The United States of America in 1930 lacked only one thing: an adequate supply of money to carry on trade and commerce. In the early 1930's, Bankers, not Congress, had become the only source of new money and credit. Bankers deliberately refused loans to industries, stores and farms. Payments on existing loans were required however, and money rapidly disappeared from circulation. Goods were available to be purchased, jobs waiting to be done, but the lack of money brought the nation to a standstill. By this simple ploy America was put in a "depression" and the greedy Bankers took possession of hundreds of thousands of farms, homes, and business properties. The people were told, "times are hard," and "money is short." Not understanding the system, they were cruelly robbed of their earnings, their savings, and their property. Money For Peace? No! Money For War? YES! World War II ended the "depression." The same Bankers who in the early 30's had no loans for peacetime houses, food and clothing, suddenly had unlimited billions to lend for Army barracks, K-rations and uniforms! A nation that in 1934 couldn't produce food for sale, suddenly could produce food and guns. Then send it for free to Russia and England to fight Germany and Japan! With the sudden increase in money, people were hired, farms sold their produce, factories went to two shifts, mines re-opened, and "The Great Depression" was over! Some politicians were blamed for it and others took credit for ending it. The truth is the lack of money (caused by the Bankers) brought on the depression, and adequate money ended it. The people were never told that simple truth. In this article we will show how these same Bankers who control our money and credit have used their control to plunder America and place us in bondage. Power To Coin And Regulate Money When we can see the disastrous results of an artificially created shortage of money, we can better understand why our Founding Fathers, who understood both money and God's Laws, insisted on placing the power to "create" money and the power to control it only in the hands of the Federal Congress. They believed that all citizens should share in the profits of its "creation" and therefore the national government must be the only creator of money. They further believed that all citizens, of whatever State or Territory, or station in life would benefit by an adequate and stable currency and therefore, the national government must also be, by law, the only controller of the value of money. Since the Federal Congress was the only legislative body subject to all the citizens at the ballot box, it was, to their minds, the only safe depository of so much profit and so much power. They wrote it out in the simple, but all- inclusive: "Congress shall have the Power to Coin Money and Regulate the Value Thereof." How The People Lost Control To The Privately Owned Federal Reserve Instead of the Constitutional method of creating our money and putting it into circulation, we now have an entirely unconstitutional system. This has resulted in almost disastrous conditions, as we shall see. Since our money was handled both legally and illegally before 1913, we shall consider only the years following 1913, since from that year on, ALL of our money has been created and issued by an illegal method that will eventually destroy the United States if it is not changed. Prior to 1913, America was a prosperous, powerful, and growing nation, at peace with its neighbors and the envy of the world. But, in December of 1913, Congress, with many members away for the Christmas holidays, passed what has since been known as the Federal Reserve Act. Omitting the burdensome details, it simply authorized the establishment of a privately owned national bank deceptively named The Federal Reserve Corporation. It had a Board of Directors (The Federal Reserve Board) to run it, and the United States was divided into 12 Federal Reserve "Districts." This simple, but terrible, law completely removed from Congress the right to "create" money or to have any control over its "creation," and gave that function to the Federal Reserve Corporation. This was done with appropriate fanfare and propaganda that this would "remove money from politics" (they didn't say "and therefore from the people's control") and prevent "Boom and Bust" from hurting our citizens. The people were not told then, and most still do not know today, that the Federal Reserve Corporation is a private corporation controlled by bankers and operated for the financial gain of the bankers over the people rather than for the good of the people. The word "Federal" was used only to deceive the people. More Disastrous Than Pearl Harbor Since that "day of infamy," more disastrous to us than Pearl Harbor, the small group of "privileged" people who lend us "our" money have accrued to themselves all of the profits of printing our money - and more! Since 1913 they have "created" tens of billions of dollars in money and credit, which, as their own personal property, they then lend to our government and our people at interest. They Print It - We Borrow It - And Pay Them Interest We shall start with the need for money. The Federal Government, having spent more than it has taken from its citizens in taxes, needs, for the sake of illustration, $1,000,000,000. Since it does not have the money, and Congress has given away its authority to "create" it, the Government must go the "creators" for the $1 billion. But, the Federal Reserve, a private corporation, doesn't just give its money away! The Bankers are willing to deliver $1,000,000,000 in money or credit to the Federal Government in exchange for the Government's agreement to pay it back- with interest! So Congress authorizes the Treasury Department to print $1,000,000,000 in U.S. Bonds, which are then delivered to the Federal Reserve Bankers. TheFederal Reserve then pays the cost of printing the $1,000,000,000 (about $1,000) and makes the exchange. The Government then uses the money to pay its obligations. What are the results of this fantastic scam? Well, $1 billion in Government bills are paid all right, but the Government has now indebted the citizens to the Bankers for $1 billion on which the taxpayers must pay interest! Tens of thousands of such transactions have taken place since 1913 so that by the 1980's, the U.S. Government is indebted to the Bankers forover $1,000,000,000,000 (trillion) on which the people pay over $100 billion a year just in interest alone with no hope of ever paying off the principal. Unless we repent of this sin, our children and following generations will pay forever and forever! And There's More You say, "This is terrible!" Yes, it is, but we have shown only part of the sordid story. Under this evil system, those United States Bonds have now become "assets" of the Banks in the Reserve System which they then use as "reserves" to "create" more "credit" to lend. Current "reserve" requirements allow them to use that $1 billion in bonds to "create" as much as $15 billion in new "credit" to lend to States, Municipalities, to individuals and businesses. Added to the original $1 billion, they could have $16 billion of "created credit" out in loans paying them interest with their only cost being $1,000 for printing the original $1 billions! Since the U.S. Congress has not issued Constitutional money since 1863 (over 100 years), in order for the people to have money to carry on trade and commerce they are forced to borrow the "created credit" of the Monopoly Bankers and pay them usury-interest! And There's Still More In addition to the vast wealth drawn from the public through this almost unlimited usury, the Bankers who control the money at the top are able to approve or disapprove large loans to large and successful corporations to the extent that refusal of a loan will bring about a reduction in the price that that Corporation's stock sells for on the market. After depressing the price, the Bankers' agents can buy large blocks of the stock, after which the sometimes multi-million dollar loan is approved, the stock rises, and is then sold for a profit. In this manner billions of dollars are made with which to buy more stock. This practice is so refined today that the Federal Reserve Board need only announce to the newspapers an increase or decrease in their "rediscount rate" to send stocks up and down as they wish. Using this method since 1913, the Bankers and their agents have purchased secret or open control of almost every large corporation in America. Using that control, they then force the corporations to borrow huge sums from their banks so that corporation earnings are siphoned off in the form of interest to the banks. This leaves little as actual "profits" which otherwise would have been paid as dividends. The banks reap billions in interest from corporate loans. The result, the bankers get almost all of the companies profits, while individual stockholders are left holding the bag. The millions of working families of America are now indebted to the few thousand Banking Families for twice the assessed value of the entire United States. And these Banking Families obtained that debt against us for the cost of paper, ink, and bookkeeping! The Interest Amount Is Never Created The only way new "money" goes into circulation in America is when it is borrowed from Bankers. When the State and people borrow large sums, we seem to prosper. However, the Bankers "create" only the amount of the principal of each loan, never the extra amount needed to pay the interest. Therefore, the new money never equals the new debt added. The amounts needed to pay the interest on loans is not "created," and therefore does not exist! Under this kind of a system, where new debt always exceeds the new money no matter how much or how little is borrowed, the total debt increasingly outstrips the amount of money available to pay the debt. The people can never, ever get out of debt! An example will show the viciousness of this usury-debt system with its "built-in" unpayable debt. If $60,000 Is Borrowed, $255,931.20 Must Be Paid Back When a citizen goes to a Banker to borrow $60,000 to purchase a home or a farm, the Banker agent has the borrower agree to pay back the loan plus interest. At 14% interest for 30 years, the Borrower must agree to pay $710.92 per month for a total of $255,931.20. The Banker then requires the citizen to assign to the Banker the right of ownership of the property if the Borrower does not make the required payments. The Bank then gives the Borrower a $60,000 check or a $60,000 deposit slip crediting the Borrower's checking account with $60,000. The Borrower then writes checks to the builder, subcontractors, etc., who in turn write checks. $60,000 of new "checkbook" money is thereby added to "money in circulation." However, and this is the fatal flaw in a usury system, the only new money created and put into circulation is the amount of the loan, $60,000. The money to pay the interest is not created, and therefore was not added to "money in circulation." Even so, this Borrower (and those who follow him in ownership of the property) must earn and take out of circulation $255,931, almost $200,000 more than he put in circulation when he borrowed the original $60,000! (By the way, it is this interest which cheats all families out of nicer homes. It is not that they can't afford them; it is because the Banker's usury forces them to pay for 4 homes to get one!) Musical Chairs With each round someone is stuck without a chair. Every new loan puts the same process in operation. Each borrower gives a mortgage and adds a small sum to the total money supply when he borrows. But, because of interest, the payments on the loan take away a much larger sum from the total money supply. There is therefore no way all debtors can pay off the money-lenders. As they pay the principal and interest, the money in circulation disappears. Someone will not be able to meet his mortgage payments. He will lose his "chair". All the people can do is struggle against each other, borrowing more and more from the money-lenders each generation. The Bankers, who produce nothing of value, slowly, then more rapidly, gain a death grip on the land, buildings, and present and future earnings of the whole working population. (They take ownership of all the chairs.) Proverbs 22:7 has come to pass in America. The borrowers have become the servants of the lenders. No wonder God Almighty forbids interest on loans. Small Loans Do The Same Thing If you haven't quite grasped the impact of the above, let us consider a small auto loan for 3 years at 18% interest. Step 1: Citizen borrows $5,000 and pays it into circulation (it goes to the dealer, factory, miner, etc.) and he signs a note agreeing to pay the Banker $6,500. Step 2: Citizen pays $180 per month of his earnings to the Banker. In 3 years he will take out of circulation $l,5OO more than his loan put in circulation. ($5,000 in, $6,500 out.) Every loan of Banker "created" money (credit) causes the same thing to happen. Since this has happened millions of times since 1913 (and continues today), you can see why America has gone from a prosperous, debt-free nation to a debt-ridden nation where practically every home, farm and business is mortgaged to some Banker. The usury-tribute paid to the Bankers on personal, local, State and Federal debt totals more than the combined earnings of 25% of the working people. Soon it will be 50% and continue up. This Is Why Bankers Prosper - In Good Times Or Bad In the millions of transactions made each year like those above, little actual currency changes hands, nor is it necessary that it do so. 95% of all "cash" transactions in the U.S. are by check, so the Banker is perfectly safe in "creating" that so-called "loan" by writing the check or deposit slip, not against actual money, but against your promise to pay it back! The cost to him is paper, ink and a few dollars in salaries and office costs for each transaction. It is "check-kiting" on an enormous scale. The profits increase rapidly, year after year. The Cost To You? Eventually, Everything! In 1910 the U.S. Federal debt was only $1 billion, or $12.40 per citizen. State and local debts were practically non-existent. By 1920, after only 6 years of Federal Reserve shenanigans, the Federal debt had jumped to $24 billion, or $228 per person. In 1960 the Federal debt reached $284 billion, or $1,575 per citizen and State and local debts were mushrooming. By 1981 the Federal debt passed $1 trillion and was growing exponentially as the Banker's tripled the interest rates. State and local debts are now more than the Federal, and with business and personal debts totaled over $6 trillion, 3 times the value of all land and buildings in America. If we signed over to the money-lenders all of America we would still owe them 2 more Americas (plus their usury, of course!) However, they are too cunning to take title to everything. They will instead leave you with an "illusion of ownership" so you and your children will continue to work for them and pay the Bankers more of your earnings on ever- increasing debts. The "establishment" has captured our people with their ungodly system of usury and debt as certainly as if they had marched in with a uniformed army. The borrower must pay back more than he borrowed; so bankers always get back more than they lend! For The Gamblers Among My Readers To grasp the truth that periodic withdrawal of money through interest payments will inexorably transfer all wealth in the nation to the receiver of interest, imagine yourself in a poker or dice game where everyone must buy the chips (the medium of exchange) from a "banker" who does not risk chips in the game, but watches the table and every hour reaches in and takes 10% to 15% of all the chips on the table. As the game goes on, the amount of chips in the possession of each player will go up and down with his "luck." However, the total number of chips available to play the game (carry on trade and business) will decrease rapidly. The game will get low on chips, and some will run out. If they want to continue to play, they must buy or borrow them from the "banker." The "banker" will sell (lend) them only if the player signs a "mortgage" agreeing to give the "banker" some real property (car, home, farm, business, etc.) if he cannot make periodic payments to pay back all of the chips plus some extra ones (interest). The payments must be made on time, whether the player wins (makes a profit) or not. It is easy to see that no matter how skillfully you play, eventually the "banker" will end up with all of the chips, and except for the very best players, the rest, if they stay in long enough, will lose to the "banker" their homes, their farms, their businesses. Lose their cars, watches, rings, the shirts off their backs and the un-read Bible on the end table! Our real-life situation is much worse than any poker game. In a poker game none is forced to go into debt, and anyone can quit at any time and keep whatever he still has. But in real life, even if we borrow little ourselves from the Bankers, the local, State, and Federal governments borrow billions in our name, then tax away our earnings to pay it back to the Bankers with interest. We are forced to play the game, and none can leave except by death. We pay as long as we live. Our children pay after we die. If we cannot pay, the same government sends the police to take our property and give it to the Bankers. The Bankers risk nothing in the game; they just collect their percentage and "win it all." In Las Vegas and at other gambling centers, all games are "rigged" to pay the owner a percentage, and they rake in millions. The Federal Reserve Bankers' "game" is also rigged, and it pays off, not in millions, but in billions! In recent years Bankers added real "cards" to their game. " Credit'' cards are promoted as a convenience and a great boon to trade. Actually, they are ingenious devices by which Bankers collect 2% to 5% of every retail sale from the seller and 18% interest from buyers. A real "stacked" deck! Yes, It's Political, Too!: Democrat, Republican, and Independent voters who have wondered why politicians always spend more tax money than they take in should now see the reason. When they begin to study our "debt- money" system, they soon realize that these politicians are not the agents of the people but are now the agents of the Bankers, for whom they plan ways to place the people further in debt. It takes only a little imagination to see that if Congress had been "creating," and spending or issuing into circulation the necessary increase in the money supply, there would be no national debt, and the over $4 Trillion of other debts would be practically non-existent. Since there would be no original cost of money except printing, and no continuing costs such as interest, Federal taxes would be almost nil. Money, once in circulation, would remain there and go on serving its purpose as a medium of exchange for generation after generation and century after century, just as coins do now, with no payments to the Bankers whatever! Mounting Debts And Wars But, instead of peace and debt-free prosperity, we have ever mounting debt and periodic wars. We as a people are now ruled by a system of Banker-owned Mammon that has usurped the mantle of government, disguised itself as our legitimate government, and set about to pauperize and control our people. It is now a centralized, all-powerful political apparatus whose main purposes are promoting war, spending the peoples' money, and propagandizing to perpetuate itself in power. Our two large political parties have become its servants, the various departments of government its spending agencies, and the Internal Revenue its collection agency. Unknown to the people, it operates in close cooperation with similar apparatuses in other nations, which are also disguised as "governments." Some, we are told, are friends. Some, we are told, are enemies. "Enemies" are built up through international manipulations and used to frighten the American people into going billions of dollars more into debt to the Bankers for military preparedness, foreign aid, welfare, minority rights, etc.. Citizens, deliberately confused by brainwashing propaganda, watch helplessly while our politicians give our food, goods, and money to Banker-controlled alien governments under the guise of "better relations" and "easing tensions." Our Banker-controlled government takes our finest and bravest sons and sends them into foreign wars, where tens of thousands are murdered, and hundreds of thousands are crippled. Other thousands are morally corrupted, addicted to drugs, and infected with venereal and other diseases, which they bring back to the United States. When the "war" is over, we have gained nothing, but we are scores of billions of dollars more in debt to the Bankers, which was the reason for the "war" in the first place! And There's More The profits from these massive debts have been used to erect a complete and almost hidden economic and political colossus over our nation. They keep telling us they are trying to do us "good," when in truth they work to bring harm and injury to our people. These despots know it is easier to control and rob an ill, poorly-educated and confused people than it is a healthy and intelligent population, so they deliberately prevent real cures for diseases, they degrade our educational systems, and they stir up social and racial unrest. For the same reason they favor drug use, alcohol, racial intermarriage, sexual promiscuity, abortion, pornography, and crime. Everything which debilitates the minds and bodies of the people is secretly encouraged, as it makes the people less able to oppose them or even to understand what is being done to them. Family, morals, love of Country, the Christian religion, all that is honorable is being swept away, while they try to build their new, subservient man. Our new "rulers" are trying to change our whole racial, social, religious, and political order, but they will not change the debt-money economic system by which they rob and rule. Our people have become tenants and "debt-slaves" to the Bankers and their agents in the land our fathers conquered. It is conquest through the most gigantic fraud and swindle in the history of mankind. And we remind you again The key to their wealth and power over us is their ability to create "money" out of nothing and lend it to us at interest. If they had not been allowed to do that, if the Pastors would have taught God's Law, they would never have gained secret control of our nation. How true Solomon's words are: "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7). God Almighty warned in the Bible that one of the curses which would come upon His People for disobeying His Laws was: The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. He shall Lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him; he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. (Deut. 28: 44-45). Most of the owners of the largest banks in America are of Eastern European ancestry and connected with the Rothschild European banks. Has that warning come to fruition in America? A Debt-Free America If we had debt-free and interest-free money, there would be no high and confiscatory taxation, our homes would be mortgage free with no $l0,000-a-year payments to the Bankers, nor would they get $l,000 to $2,500 per year from every automobile on our roads. We would need no "easy payment" plans, no "revolving" charge accounts, no loans to pay medical or hospital bills, no loans to pay taxes, no loans to pay for burials, no loans to pay loans, nor any of the thousand and one usury-bearing loans which now suck the life-blood of American families. There would be no unemployment, no divorces caused by debt, no destitute old people, or mounting crime, and even the so-called "deprived" classes would not be deprived of either a job or money to buy the necessities of life. Criminals could not become politicians, nor would politicians become criminals in the pay of the Moneylenders. Our officials, at all government levels, would be working for the people instead of devising means to spend more money to place us further in debt to the Bankers. We would get out of the entangling foreign alliances that have engulfed us in four major wars and scores of minor wars since the Federal Reserve Act was passed, alliances which are now used to prevent America from preparing her own defense in the face of mounting danger from alien powers. A debt-free America would mean mothers would not have to work. With mother at home, juvenile delinquency would decrease rapidly. The United States is aware of the growing crisis between Russia and Israel, they said. The Russian daily Kommersant reported Wednesday that Israel recalled its ambassador over the deal. Israeli officials said the ambassador was in Israel on vacation and denied he had been recalled. The newspaper said Moscow planned to sell Iskander-E missile complexes to Syria. The missiles can destroy targets up to 175 miles away and would put all of Israel's territory, including the Dimona nuclear center in the Negev desert, in jeopardy, Kommersant said. It said that Syria had turned to Moscow two years ago with a request to purchase 18 Iskander-E complexes, but that the equipment had not even been tested yet so Damascus settled for Kornet-E and Metis-M missile systems. The press service of Russia's main arms export company, Rosoboronexport, said it had no information that Russia was planning such a sale. Mikhail Troyanovsky, the deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry press service, said that "all issues pertaining to the Kommersant publication are being thoroughly studied by the Foreign Ministry." Chertoff, according to Brill, knew that the prisoners "were entitled to call a lawyer from jail, but the lists the INS provided of available lawyers invariably had phone numbers that were not in service.... according to one person who says he was there, someone in the room remarked that the government should not try too hard to make sure these people could contact lawyers. 'Let's not make it so they can get Johnnie Cochran on the phone,' another lawyer added." Brill, according to columnist Nat Hentoff, states that "there was indeed a deliberate, pervasive blocking of detainees' right to phone lawyers. And those orders, as Brill's book reveals, came from the top. At the very top, next to Ashcroft, was Michael Chertoff." The conservative watchdog group Accuracy in Media claims that Chertoff was involved in the TWA Flight 800 coverup, while Independent Judiciary investigators say that Chertoff is responsible for "dangerous curtailments to free speech and the rights of criminal defendants." The Krasin, which I believe is one of their biggest, is reported to be presently south of the equator under full steam to meet a US icebreaker. The story goes that 2 large icebergs are grounded in McMurdo Bay preventing supplies reaching the Base. There's something wrong with that story. This time of the year is favorable for all manner of activity at Antartica. The Russian tourist ship the icebreaker 'Kapitan Khlebnikov' is probably at the Antartic with tourists now. Or at least it is capable of cancelling the tourists and rushing from its permanent dock in New Zealand or Tasmania to evacuate staff. Scientists say the geologic record shows that it has blown, or erupted, every 600,000 years. It has not erupted now in 640,000 years and many believe it is not only overdue, it is getting ready to blow. There are several indications this may be true, and the Idaho Observer reported some of them in a recent edition. Among them: The next eruption could be 2,500 times the size of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. Volcanologists have been tracking the movement of magma under the park and have calculated that, in parts of Yellowstone, the ground has risen over seventy centimeters this century. In July, 2003, Yellowstone Park rangers closed the entire Norris Geyser Basin because of deformation of the land and excessive high ground temperatures. There is an area that is 28 miles long by 7 miles wide that has bulged upward over five inches since 1996, and this year (2003) the ground temperature on that bulge has reached over 200 degrees (measured one inch below ground level). 'There was no choice but to close off the entire area,' the Idaho Observer reported. "Everything in this area is dying: The trees, flowers, grass and shrubs. A dead zone is developing and spreading outward. The animals are literally migrating out of the park. 'In late July, one of the Park geologists discovered a huge bulge at the bottom of Yellowstone Lake. The bulge has already risen over 100 feet from the bottom of the lake and the water temperature at the surface of the bulge has reached 88 degrees and is still rising, the Idaho Observer reported. 'Keep in mind that Yellowstone Lake is a high mountain lake with very cold water temperatures. The Lake is now closed to the public. It is filled with dead fish floating everywhere. The same is true of the Yellowstone river and most of the other streams in the Park. Dead and dying fish are filling the water everywhere. The Observer reported that 'many of the picnic areas in the Park have been closed and people visiting the Park usually stay but a few hours before leaving since the stench of sulfur is so strong they literally can't stand the smell.' According to the Unknown Country website, Lisa Morgan, the geologist leading a U.S. Geological Survey team studying the bulge beneath Yellowstone Lake said, "it could be the precursor to a hydrothermal explosion." Hydrothermal explosions take place when water is superheated by lava and they can be extremely violent. While dangerous, they don't come close to the power of super volcanoes. About 640,000 years ago, the Yellowstone basin was born out of the explosion of a supervolcano that deposited ash as far away as Texas. There have been claims made that another such explosion is about to happen, but USGS scientists claim that there is no evidence for this whatsoever, but a geothermal explosion that would affect Yellowstone Park and the surrounding area appears to be a possibility. 'The irony of all this is the silence by the news media and our government,' the Observer commented. 'Very little information is available from Yellowstone personnel or publications. What mainstream news stories do appear underscore the likelihood of a massive volcanic eruption.' The Observer said that, though geologists publicly admit Yellowstone is "overdue," they have been quoted as stating another massive magma release may not occur for 100,000 or 2 million years. Others close to the story are convinced that a massive eruption is imminent. The Observer again: 'A source that has demonstrated first-hand knowledge of the park's history and recent geothermal events stated the following: "The American people are not being told that the explosion of this 'super volcano' could happen at any moment. When Yellowstone does blow, some geologists predict that every living thing within six hundred miles is likely to die. The movement of magma has been detected just three-tenths of a mile below the bulging surface of the ground in Yellowstone raising concerns that this super volcano may erupt soon." ''Antibiotics knock out bacteria in the gut, allowing fungi to take over temporarily until the bacteria grow back after the antibiotics are stopped. Our research indicates that altering intestinal microflora this way can lead to changes in the entire immune system, which may produce symptoms elsewhere in the body.'' If confirmed in human clinical studies, Huffnagle believes his research findings could help explain why cases of chronic inflammatory diseases, like asthma and allergies, have been increasing rapidly over the last 40 years - a time period that corresponds with widespread use of antibiotics. To understand the implications of the U-M research, it's important to know something about the complex relationship between the gastrointestinal, respiratory and immune system in the human body. Every time you inhale, air flows past mucus-producing cells and tiny hairs designed to trap bits of pollen, dust and spores before they enter the lungs. These trapped particles are swept into the stomach with saliva and mucus as you swallow. ''Anything you inhale, you also swallow,'' Huffnagle says. ''So the immune cells in your GI tract are exposed directly to airborne allergens and particulates. This triggers a response from immune cells in the GI tract to generate regulatory T cells, which then travel through the bloodstream searching the body for these antigens. These regulatory T cells block the development of allergic T cell responses in the lungs and sinuses.'' Most of the time, in ways scientists don't completely understand, the GI tract immune system modulates or dampens down the allergic T cells' response to incoming allergens in the lungs, according to Huffnagle. But when antibiotics reduce the bacterial population in the GI tract, the number of yeast and other fungal organisms increases. In previous studies, researchers in Huffnagle's lab discovered that fungi secrete molecules called oxylipins, which can control the type and intensity of immune responses. Huffnagle says this suggests the intriguing possibility that fungal oxylipins in the GI tract prevent the development of regulatory T cells for swallowed allergens. In the absence of regulatory T cells from the GI tract, T cells in the lungs become sensitized to the presence of ordinary mold spores, pollen or other allergens. The result is a hyperactive immune response, which can produce allergy symptoms or even asthma. To test Huffnagle's hypothesis, Mairi C. Noverr, Ph.D., a U-M research fellow in internal medicine, gave a five-day course of oral antibiotics to normal lab mice followed by a single oral introduction of the yeast, Candida albicans, to create a consistent, reproducible colony of microbes in the stomach and intestines. C. albicans is normally found in the GI tract, and increased growth of C. albicans in the gut is a common side-effect of antibiotics. Two days after stopping the antibiotics - at a time when the gut bacteria were growing back - Noverr exposed the mice to a common mold allergen called Aspergillus fumigatus by inoculating spores into the nasal cavities of all the mice in her study. She then examined the mice for the presence of an allergic response in the airways and compared results between the mice that received antibiotics and those that did not. ''Mice treated with antibiotics and colonized with C. albicans showed increased pulmonary hypersensitivity to A. fumigatus compared with mice that didn't receive antibiotics,'' Noverr says. ''The inflammatory response grew stronger with every exposure to the allergen.'' ''After antibiotics changed the mix of microbes in the GI tract, the mice developed an allergic response in the lungs when exposed to common mold spores,'' Huffnagle explains. ''Mice that didn't receive the antibiotics were able to fight off the mold spores.'' Huffnagle and Noverr will discuss details of the experiment in a symposia lecture and poster presentation at the ASM meeting. Complete data from the study has been submitted for publication in a future issue of Infection and Immunity. Huffnagle maintains that disruptions in the growth of bacteria and fungi in the GI tract somehow interfere with the ability of regulatory T cells to dampen the immune response to respiratory allergens. In future research, he hopes to determine exactly how gastrointestinal microbes are involved in the process of immune system modulation. ''We know from laboratory experiments that dietary antioxidants called polyphenols, which are found in fruits and vegetables, can limit fungal growth and that a diet high in saturated fats and sugars slows the recovery of normal gut microflora,'' Huffnagle adds. ''The Mediterranean diet is rich in sources of polyphenols, so it's intriguing that Mediterranean-diet countries have lower rates of allergies, asthma and other inflammatory diseases than Western-diet countries like the United States, Canada and England. ''If we can determine exactly how microflora in the GI tract affect the immune system, it may be possible one day to prevent or treat allergies and inflammatory diseases with diet changes or probiotics - dietary supplements of 'healthy' bacteria designed to restore the normal balance of microbes in the gut,'' Huffnagle adds. ''In the medical community, probiotic therapy is becoming an area of increasing interest.'' Until then, Huffnagle emphasizes the importance of a healthy low-sugar diet, with lots of raw fruits and vegetables, after being treated with antibiotics to help restore the normal mix of microbes in your GI tract as quickly as possible. On another occasion a month later, the witness said he watched as SEALs punched, choked and poked their fingers in the eye of Iraqi Manadel al-Jamadi, who also was punched by a CIA official when he didn't answer questions. Al-Jamadi, a suspect in the bombing of a Red Cross facility in Iraq, died a few hours after he was captured during a joint CIA-special operations mission in November 2003. He died while being interrogated by CIA personnel in the shower room of the Abu Ghraib prison. The former SEAL, who was not identified, was the government's main witness at Monday's Article 32 hearing. The hearing, the military equivalent of a civilian grand jury, was for a Navy SEAL lieutenant who is accused of assault, maltreatment and conduct unbecoming an officer for his handling of detainees, including al-Jamadi. A Navy officer hearing the evidence will make a recommendation whether the lieutenant, who was not identified, should face a court-martial. Although the lieutenant is not charged with al-Jamadi's death, it could be an aggravating factor that could yield stiffer punishment. The ex-SEAL who testified Monday, and who also served under the lieutenant in Iraq, was kicked out of the elite unit after he was convicted of stealing a fellow SEAL's bulletproof vest -- an act that earned him the nickname "Klepto." The sailor said he saw the lieutenant abuse prisoners, including al-Jamadi, three times. Iraq provides terrorists with "a training ground, a recruitment ground, the opportunity for enhancing technical skills," said David B. Low, the national intelligence officer for transnational threats. "There is even, under the best scenario, over time, the likelihood that some of the jihadists who are not killed there will, in a sense, go home, wherever home is, and will therefore disperse to various other countries." Low's comments came during a rare briefing by the council on its new report on long-term global trends. It took a year to produce and includes the analysis of 1,000 U.S. and foreign experts. Within the 119-page report is an evaluation of Iraq's new role as a breeding ground for Islamic terrorists. President Bush has frequently described the Iraq war as an integral part of U.S. efforts to combat terrorism. But the council's report suggests the conflict has also helped terrorists by creating a haven for them in the chaos of war. "At the moment," NIC Chairman Robert L. Hutchings said, Iraq "is a magnet for international terrorist activity." Before the U.S. invasion, the CIA said Saddam Hussein had only circumstantial ties with several al Qaeda members. Osama bin Laden rejected the idea of forming an alliance with Hussein and viewed him as an enemy of the jihadist movement because the Iraqi leader rejected radical Islamic ideals and ran a secular government. Bush described the war in Iraq as a means to promote democracy in the Middle East. "A free Iraq can be a source of hope for all the Middle East," he said one month before the invasion. "Instead of threatening its neighbors and harboring terrorists, Iraq can be an example of progress and prosperity in a region that needs both." Unguarded borders But as instability in Iraq grew after the toppling of Hussein, and resentment toward the United States intensified in the Muslim world, hundreds of foreign terrorists flooded into Iraq across its unguarded borders. They found tons of unprotected weapons caches that, military officials say, they are now using against U.S. troops. Foreign terrorists are believed to make up a large portion of today's suicide bombers, and U.S. intelligence officials say these foreigners are forming tactical, ever-changing alliances with former Baathist fighters and other insurgents. "The al-Qa'ida membership that was distinguished by having trained in Afghanistan will gradually dissipate, to be replaced in part by the dispersion of the experienced survivors of the conflict in Iraq," the report says. According to the NIC report, Iraq has joined the list of conflicts -- including the Israeli-Palestinian stalemate, and independence movements in Chechnya, Kashmir, Mindanao in the Philippines, and southern Thailand -- that have deepened solidarity among Muslims and helped spread radical Islamic ideology. At the same time, the report says that by 2020, al Qaeda "will be superseded" by other Islamic extremist groups that will merge with local separatist movements. Most terrorism experts say this is already well underway. The NIC says this kind of ever-morphing decentralized movement is much more difficult to uncover and defeat. Terrorists are able to easily communicate, train and recruit through the Internet, and their threat will become "an eclectic array of groups, cells and individuals that do not need a stationary headquarters," the council's report says. "Training materials, targeting guidance, weapons know-how, and fund-raising will become virtual (i.e. online)." The report, titled "Mapping the Global Future," highlights the effects of globalization and other economic and social trends. But NIC officials said their greatest concern remains the possibility that terrorists may acquire biological weapons and, although less likely, a nuclear device. The council is tasked with midterm and strategic analysis, and advises the CIA director. "The NIC's goal," one NIC publication states, "is to provide policymakers with the best, unvarnished, and unbiased information -- regardless of whether analytic judgments conform to U.S. policy." Other than reports and studies, the council produces classified National Intelligence Estimates, which represent the consensus among U.S. intelligence agencies on specific issues. 'May lose its edge' Yesterday, Hutchings, former assistant dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, said the NIC report tried to avoid analyzing the effect of U.S. policy on global trends to avoid being drawn into partisan politics. Among the report's major findings is that the likelihood of "great power conflict escalating into total war . . . is lower than at any time in the past century." However, "at no time since the formation of the Western alliance system in 1949 have the shape and nature of international alignments been in such a state of flux as they have in the past decade." The report also says the emergence of China and India as new global economic powerhouses "will be the most challenging of all" Washington's regional relationships. It also says that in the competition with Asia over technological advances, the United States "may lose its edge" in some sectors.
