Nichols prosecutor resigns after prostitution arrest

A prosecutor who pursued the state case against Oklahoma City bombing
conspirator Terry Nichols resigned Friday after being arrested last month
in a prostitution sting. 
Oklahoma County Assistant District Attorney Lou Keel submitted his
resignation letter to District Attorney Wes Lane. 

His resignation was effective immediately, Lane said. 

"While I regret that Mr. Keel's conduct has led to his separation from
this office, I must make clear I expect my staff to be role models within
the community," Lane said. 

Keel, 54, was arrested Nov. 11 as part of an Oklahoma City Police
Department vice squad prostitution sting on an accusation that he offered
to pay for sex. 

He first made the offer in a telephone call to a massage service
advertisement police had placed in a publication, police said. 

Keel repeated the offer in a subsequent telephone call and was arrested
after meeting the undercover officer at a hotel and offering to pay $50,
police said. 

Keel had worked as a prosecutor in Oklahoma County for 23 years. He was
part of the prosecution team that sought to convict Nichols of state
murder charges and send him to death row. 

Nichols, who is already serving a federal life sentence for the death of
eight federal agents, was convicted of 161 counts of murder. 

A jury deadlocked on whether to sentence him to death, and a judge gave
Nichols a sentence of life in prison. Timothy McVeigh was executed in
June 2001 for his role in the bombing.
