The U.S. has closed its embassy in Damascus on Thursday for security
reasons, the mission said in a website statement. 
  
  

"The embassy will be closed to the public on Thursday, November 4, 2004
to enable it to reassess its security posture," it said. 
  
  

An official at the embassy refused to give any further details regarding
the reasons of the closure. He said that the embassy will be closed just
for one day, although the mission is usually shut on Fridays and
Saturdays. 
  
  

There has been tension between Syria and the United States over the past
few months, and the relation between the two countries have long been
strained.  
  
  

In May the U.S. imposed economic sanctions on Syria, claiming it was
supporting terrorism and preparing to produce weapons of mass
destruction, charges that were strongly denied by Syria. 
  
  

In October, the UN, backed by the United States and France, submitted a
resolution demanding Syria to withdraw all its troops from Lebanon and
end what it called as foreign interference in country's affairs
