From shadowgroup-l at lists.resist.ca Mon Oct 11 08:45:36 2004 From: shadowgroup-l at lists.resist.ca (shadowgroup-l at lists.resist.ca) Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 08:45:36 -0700 Subject: [Shadow_Group] Italy and Switzerland Requested Indymedia's Server Seizure Message-ID: http://indymedia.org/en/2004/10/112047.shtml Today, October 8, 2004, Indymedia has learned that the request to seize Indymedia servers hosted by a US company in the UK originated from government agencies in Italy and Switzerland. More than 20 Indymedia sites, several internet radio streams and other projects were hosted on the servers. They were taken offline on October 7th after an order was issued to Rackspace, Inc., one of Indymedia's web hosting providers. The reasons for the court order or who actually holds the servers now are still unknown to Indymedia. According to Italian news agency reports and an Agence France-Presse (AFP) interview with FBI spokesman Joe Parris, the FBI acted on Italian and Swiss requests. "It is not an FBI operation," Parris told AFP. "Through a legal assistance treaty, the subpoena was on behalf of a third country." (1) Earlier today Rackspace published a statement that they turned over the servers in response to an order under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). The MLAT establishes procedures for countries to assist each other in investigations regarding international terrorism, kidnapping and money laundering. The court prohibits Rackspace from commenting further on this matter. (2) An Indymedia system administrator stated: "We do not know if Rackspace is under a gag order, or what legal restrictions were imposed requiring them to act this way, or whether their legal department had enough time to study the request." Aidan White, the General Secretary for the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) had this to say. "We have witnessed an intolerable and intrusive international police operation against a network specialising in independent journalism. The way this has been done smacks more of intimidation of legitimate journalistic inquiry than crime-busting." (3) Indymedia condemns the fact that even 24 hours after two entire servers were taken down, Indymedia is still not getting any information of the reasons for the order. By taking down 2 servers more than 20 Indymedia sites were affected in different countries globally as well as several unrelated projects. Indymedia considers this extremely invasive operation a a serious threat to the Freedom of Speech worldwide. Indymedia insists that the servers are returned because each day they are inoperable and Indymedia's irreplaceable data is unaccessible means greater material damages to the Indymedia operation worldwide. What Bush says.... "I'm the commander - see, I don't need to explain - I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation." Message-ID: Alternatives to the System of Brainwashing, Genocide and Ecological Suicide By Wallaby Poors The most positive thing is lots of people are writing, lots of people are talking, lots of people are caring lots of people are going to do it for themselves and each other We don't just have to work together, we have to live together, accept our diversities, and save our collective home we need to get some grassroots foundations that we can build our own exaamples of self sustainable and equitable living on. This starts with not asking politicians and business if we can. We will need to keep asking for scraps of upperclass criminals or we get our shit together and show to people that don't have much hope or care, that there is an alternative way of living we all know how easy it could be to live a back to earth lifestyle, especially if we were able to reach our full potential and put our energies to solving our collective problem/s, instead of making money.(for ourselves, and more so for upperclass criminals) we don't all have the conditions to reach our full potential, there is no justice JUST US. We have forgotten those that have not been exposed to the life lessons we have. Every one has responsibility for what they do and what they allow to occur, but how do we know the extent of grand manipulations of society, let alone inform others who don't percieve the manipulations PEople are fucken scared. Its just that the majority of people outside of privileges (only seen by the upperclass lower empathy than pond scum set) don't exactly know what it is thet are petrified of. Is it terrorists? Is it interest rates? Foreign invaders? Hippies? Bike riders? Children from the Middle East? Meanwhile, people like us know it is the ones telling us what to be scared of that are the ones to be scared of. Australia is illegal under international law. Sovereignty has never been ceded and the Traditional lore systems of Indigenous people have never been allowed to be heard, let alone respected, under this genocidal imperialist, caapitalist system. NOW do you know that : * at the current production rate, North America and Western Europe will run out of oil in 2010? * One million U.S. military personnel are deployed overseas near oil fields and oil routes? * U.S. military deployment in Afghanistan and Central Asia blocks China and Russia from accessing oil and natural gas they desperately need for their economies ? Is invading foreign countries the solution to reducing terrorist threats against the United States? Since George Bush's invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Islamic fundamentalists are recruiting more than ever and acts of terrorism have multiplied around the world. Now Dick Cheney claims that "the American way of life is not negotiable". The real question becomes: is invading foreign countries the acceptable way to ensure that Joe Blow can go on driving his 8-mile-to-the-gallon Hummer or that the average American can go on consuming 4 times more energy that the average European or 32 times more energy than the average African ? After spending three months between Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Free-Will assesses the catastrophic results of Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush Jr.'s attacks on Iraq and Afghanistan. THE OIL FACTOR looks at both the human cost and the greater geo-strategic picture of these invasions that may precipitate the world toward the next global conflict. Filled with solid facts and figures, easy-to-understand maps, original footage shot in Iraq and Afghanistan and interviews of such personalities as Zbigniew Brzezinski, Noam Chomsky, The Project for the New American Century Director Gary Schmitt, best-seller "Taliban" author Ahmed Rashid or Pentagon's Karen Kwiatkowski, THE OIL FACTOR is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand what is really at stake with today's "war-on-terror". The debates' sponsor, the Commission on Presidential Debates, denied the Cobb campaign's repeated requests to participate in the debates with Bush and Kerry and denied Mr. Cobb's request to attend the St. Louis debate as an audience member. Cobb was arrested shortly after the start of the Washington University debate, one of three sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, an organization founded and operated by the two old establishment parties. Cobb was arrested by St. Louis City police officers when he pushed through a line of police with shields who were preventing entry to the debate. "The real crime is the corporate hijacking of our democracy. The corporations sponsoring these restricted, scripted and staged events, and their two-party accomplices, don't want the American people to know about the choices they have in this election. Both Big Business and the duopoly don't want you to hear voices calling for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq or for health care for every single American citizen," said Cobb. "Debates aren't just about who is going to win an election; they are the only forum where we can have unrestricted dialogue about the critical issues facing us. Third parties have a long history of changing the political landscape of this country. Restricting debates to two parties severely limits our potential for progressive change," said Cobb-LaMarche Media Director Blair Bobier. "All real social change came about in this country because of the pressure brought by a third party. Slavery was ended because of pressure brought to bear by a third party called the Republicans. The Greenback-Labor Party pressured this country to give women the right to vote. The Socialist Party created the momentum for the creation of Social Security. The Progressive Party brought pressure to bring about the direct election of the United States Senate," said Cobb. Debates including third party and independent candidates have had a profound effect on recent American politics. Ross Perot's participation in the 1992 presidential debates is widely credited with putting the issue of a balanced federal budget on the table. Jesse Ventura' s victory as a gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota was due in large part to the fact that he participated in debates with his two-party opponents. The Cobb-LaMarche campaign supports debate participation standards which are fair, objective and allow for the participation of more than two candidates. Specifically, the campaign supports debates which include candidates who are on enough ballots to win the presidency. In this election, that would be only six candidates, a very manageable number and far fewer than participated in many of the Democratic presidential primary debates this year. Obtaining ballot access in a sufficient number of states is a very rigorous and complicated process which would serve as a reasonable threshold for participation. "Participation in presidential debates should not be dependent on polls commissioned by the corporate media," said Bobier. Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik pushed his way through the police line at the debate site about a minute after Cobb and was similarly arrested. Cobb and Badnarik have debated four times in this campaign; a fifth debate is scheduled for October 15 at Eastern Tennessee State University with a number of other candidates. In fact, I?m starting at several of the previous attempts in front of me as I try to find the words I need to say. Forgive my lapses in these dispatches. I?ve been doing them for a year now. I have strived to inspire people with my words. At times, I have tried to inspire action. However, the majority of the time I have tried to inspire you to look within your self and see your true strength and power-to find the courage to be free. Too often, we accept the roles forced upon us whether they be stereotypes or the obligations of a content citizen. Sometimes, we create our own role to hide behind, afraid to face our true selves or our fears. The walls can be built so thick we can almost forget we have become guided by pain or fear. In my life, I have been guilty of both and on more than one occasion. In fact, I am guilty right now. I feel an obligation to every person out there who looks up to me or admires me. I feel an obligation to a movement that expects its political prisoners to stand strong in the face of all adversity. Many of the decisions I have made in the last four years I have made because of these obligations. A friend of mine recently said to me, ?What people don?t get is there is the image of ?Free? the world sees and then there is the guy I?m walking the track with?. I have dedicated my entire adult life to the struggles I believe in. My sense of honor demands no less and despite all of my failures, personal and political, I am proud of myself. It?s a personal victory. I found the courage to be me. But, lately I can?t remember if I?m Free or Jeff or the two are even interchangeable. It?s not that I?ve forgotten who I am. I?ve forgotten who I want to be. So, now I must find the courage to let go of obligations; self-created or otherwise. I?m not a role model or a leader and I sure as hell ain?t the hope for a better future-because that?s you. No, I?m just a simple guy with a big heart and a lot of dreams. Actually, I?d like to think the only difference between you and I is that I got caught. I?ve entered a stage in my life where I need to reevaluate what I need to be doing. There have been many changes in how I view my life, the people in it and my goals. This will be my last dispatch until my appeal is decided or I feel the need to say something. I?m not sure which will happen first. Of course, I will continue to write articles and editorials as inspiration strikes. I will continue to stand strong in the face of all adversity, not because it is expected of me, but because I demand it of myself. We are all warriors, only our battlefields vary. Freedom is your birthright. Take it! Before he ordered, he couldn't help but notice a group of younger men at the table next to him. It was obvious they were making fun of something about him, and it wasn't until he remembered he was wearing a small pink ribbon on the lapel of his suit that he became aware of what the joke was all about. The man brushed off the reaction as ignorance, but the smirks began to get to him. He looked one of the rude men square in the eye, placed his hand beneath the ribbon and asked, quizzically, "This?" With that the men all began to laugh out loud. The man he addressed said, as he fought back laughter, "Hey, sorry man, but we were just commenting on how pretty your little ribbon looks against your blue jacket!" The middle aged man calmly motioned for the joker to come over to his table, and invited him to sit down. As uncomfortable as he was, the guy obliged, not really sure why. In a soft voice, the middle aged man said, "I wear this ribbon to bring awareness about breast cancer. I wear it in my mother's honor." "Oh, sorry dude. She died of breast cancer?" "No, she didn't. She's alive and well. But her breasts nourished me as an infant, and were a soft resting place for my head when I was scared or lonely as a little boy. I'm very grateful for my mother's breasts, and her health." "Umm", the stranger replied, "yeah." "And I wear this ribbon to honor my wife", the middle aged man went on. "And she's okay, too?", the other guy asked" "Oh, yes. She's fine. Her breasts have been a great source of loving pleasure for both of us, and with them she nurtured and nourished our beautiful daughter 23 years ago. I am grateful for my wife's breasts, and for her health." "Uh huh. And I guess you wear it to honor your daughter, also?" "No. It's too late to honor my daughter by wearing it now. My daughter died of breast cancer one month ago. She thought she was too young to have breast cancer, so when she accidentally noticed a small lump, she ignored it. She thought that since it wasn't painful, it must not be anything to worry about." Shaken and ashamed, the now sober stranger said, "Oh, man, I'm so sorry mister." "So, in my daughter's memory, too, I proudly wear this little ribbon, which allows me the opportunity to enlighten others. Now, go home and talk to your wife and your daughters, your mother and your friends. And here . . ." The middle aged man reached in his pocket and handed the other man a little pink ribbon. The guy looked at it, slowly raised his head and asked, "Can ya help me put it on?" -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A tiny computer chip approved Wednesday for implantation in a patient's arm can speed vital information about a patient's medical history to doctors and hospitals. But critics warn that it could open new ways to imperil the confidentiality of medical records. advertisement The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that Applied Digital Solutions of Delray Beach, Fla., could market the VeriChip, an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, for medical purposes. With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches. Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over it. Think UPC code. The identifier, emblazoned on a food item, brings up its name and price on the cashier's screen. Chip's dual uses raise alarm The VeriChip itself contains no medical records, just codes that can be scanned, and revealed, in a doctor's office or hospital. With that code, the health providers can unlock that portion of a secure database that holds that person's medical information, including allergies and prior treatment. The electronic database, not the chip, would be updated with each medical visit. The microchips have already been implanted in 1 million pets. But the chip's possible dual use for tracking people's movements - as well as speeding delivery of their medical information to emergency rooms - has raised alarm. "If privacy protections aren't built in at the outset, there could be harmful consequences for patients," said Emily Stewart, a policy analyst at the Health Privacy Project. To protect patient privacy, the devices should reveal only vital medical information, like blood type and allergic reactions, needed for health care workers to do their jobs, Stewart said. An information technology guru at Detroit Medical Center, however, sees the benefits of the devices and will lobby for his center's inclusion in a VeriChip pilot program. "One of the big problems in health care has been the medical records situation. So much of it is still on paper," said David Ellis, the center's chief futurist and co-founder of the Michigan Electronic Medical Records Initiative. 'Part of the future of medicine' As "medically mobile" patients visit specialists for care, their records fragment on computer systems that don't talk to each other. "It's part of the future of medicine to have these kinds of technologies that make life simpler for the patient," Ellis said. Pushing for the strongest encryption algorithms to ensure hackers can't nab medical data as information transfers from chip to reader to secure database, will help address privacy concerns, he said. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday announced $139 million in grants to help make real President Bush's push for electronic health records for most Americans within a decade. William A. Pierce, an HHS spokesman, could not say whether VeriChip and its accompanying secure database of medical records fit within that initiative. "Exactly what those technologies are is still to be sorted out," Pierce said. "It all has to respect and comport with the privacy rules." Applied Digital gave away scanners to a few hundred animal shelters and veterinary clinics when it first entered the pet market 15 years ago. Now, 50,000 such scanners have been sold. To kickstart the chip's use among humans, Applied Digital will provide $650 scanners for free at 200 of the nation's trauma centers. Implantation costs $150 to $200 In pets, installing the chip runs about $50. For humans, the chip implantation cost would be $150 to $200, said Angela Fulcher, an Applied Digital spokeswoman. Fulcher could not say whether the cost of data storage and encrypted transmission of medical information would be passed to providers. Because the VeriChip is invisible, it's also unclear how health care workers would know which unconscious patients to scan. Company officials say if the chip use becomes routine, scanning triceps for hidden chips would become second nature at hospitals. Ultimately, the company hopes patients who suffer from such ailments as diabetes and Alzheimer's or who undergo complex treatments, like chemotherapy, would have chips implanted. If the procedure proves as popular for use in humans as in pets, that could mean up to 1 million chips implanted in people. So far, just 1,000 people across the globe have had the devices implanted, very few of them in the United States. The company's chief executive officer, Scott R. Silverman, is one of a half dozen executives who had chips implanted. Silverman said chips implanted for medical uses could also be used for security purposes, like tracking employee movement through nuclear power plants. Such security uses are rare in the United States. Meanwhile, the chip has been used for pure whimsy: Club hoppers in Barcelona, Spain, now use the microchip to enter a VIP area and, through links to a different database, speed payment much like a smartcard. On television and in newspapers soldiers claimed that the officer shot her in the head and emptied a magazine of bullets into her body. Iman el Hamas was walking to school last week when she strayed near an Israeli army post in Rafah. Soldiers opened fire and killed her. The company commander then approached the body and fired two bullets at her head before switching his gun to automatic, the soldiers alleged. Doctors found more than 20 bullets in her body. The soldiers were so disgusted by the slow pace of an army investigation that they approached the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth to demand the officer's dismissal. One told the paper: "The company CO who sprayed the girl with bullets turned us all into vicious animals and besmirched us all. "As far as we are concerned, it is either him or us. If he is not dismissed, we will not agree to serve under him. "It is a disgrace that he is still in his position. We want him to be kicked out in a legal fashion." The soldiers said the officer shot the girl even though he was told by members of his unit not to. One said: "We spotted her at a distance of 70 metres. Shots were fired at her from the positions of the outpost, she ran away and was hit. I realised she was dead. "The company CO approached her, shot two bullets into her, walked back towards the force, turned back to her, switched his weapon to automatic and emptied his entire magazine into her. "He pumped her full of holes. We were in shock, we grabbed our heads. We couldn't believe what he was doing. Our hearts ached for her." At first the army said the soldiers had suspected that the girl was carrying a bomb. Later it said the girl was being used by gunmen to lure them from their post. Yesterday an army source said an investigation had begun, but it was "too early to speak of criminal charges". The girl's family insist that she was going to school and carrying only her schoolbooks. "We demand the prosecution of Iman's killer, [but] we do not trust the Israeli judicial system," her elder brother, Ehab, said. "We know that this area where the outpost was located is off limits, but no one can control kids all the time. Iman got up and had breakfast with five of her nine brothers, and took leave of her parents as she does every day on the way to school. "Even if someone used the child, and I am certain it did not happen, she presented no danger to anyone," he said. * The Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, survived two no-confidence votes in parliament yesterday after he vowed to continue with his plan to withdraw settlers and troops from some occupied territory. Some of us are members of unions -- as am I, a proud, card-carrying member of the National Writer'?s Union, which is affiliated with the United Auto Workers. Some of us, perhaps a majority, are not members of a union, and yet, as so-called "contingency workers"; as temps, as part-timers, as on call workers, as workfare, as day laborers, as prison laborers, we are people who are workers, who add social good; and --all-- of us are catching hell! That's because wherever there is a war against wages, that means a war against workers. If we speak the truth, it doesn't matter who wins the White House; workers are catching hell. That's because the only choices before the American people are corporate choices; a thin narrow slice between two, quite similar "brokerage parties", who sell their souls to the highest bidder. Think of it this way; the last president supported by vast labor votes was William Jefferson Clinton. And how did Clinton reward labor support? By passing NAFTA, and opening the door to the globalist monster that is sucking the life-blood from most working families across the nation. The drastic loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs, and the resultant drop in wages, can be traced to the NAFTA bill. That's why a Million Worker March is now necessary; to break through the corporate gibble-gobble that now dominates the coming elections. Corporate candidates covered by corporate media for corporate interests. It's no wonder it's so slimy. It's also no wonder that the word "workers" rarely, if ever, crosses the lips of the corporate candidates. It's no wonder that the word "union" sounds like profanity when they mention it. It is only the workers that can or will defend the interests of workers: -- Universal Healthcare for ALL people; -- A national living wage and livable retirement benefits; -- Bring about democracy to the shop floor, so that decision about work are made by those who labor; -- Taxation that is progressive, on corporations and the wealthy, and relieves the burdens on the working class and poor; -- An End to Wars waged for Corporate America, like Iraq!; -- The immediate revocation of --all-- anti-labor pacts, like NAFTA, FTAA, the WTO, and CAFTA!; -- The repeal of Taft-Hartley!; -- Repeal of the so-called "PARTRIOT ACT"!; These are but some of the demands motivating the Million Worker March, but it can't be all of them. Workers actually build this society; it is they, and only they, who can re-build it. This means a resurgence of the labor movement that is truly revolutionary -- that does not "settle for it's slice", but changes the social order -- completely. The union movement has a history of exclusion that worked against its own class interests; what if --what IF-- --all-- of those people we mentioned a few moments ago -- part-timers, on-calls, perma-temps, and yes -- prison laborers -- were actually unionized? It would add immeasurably, to the power of Labor, and add to the power of unions, generally, as a social force in the social order! In a phrase, this is win-win. Social transformation is possible, but only -- ONLY -- with social organization! When people organize, broadly, and as a social force, then you will hear those political whores speak the word "union" like they are speaking of a lover! Our esteemed ancestor, the great escaped captive, and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass once said, "Power concedes nothing without demand." He was right then; he is right now. Labor must unite to force this corrupt political system to yield. We, all of us, will be able to construct new realities, not merely demand them. Or else, we will be choosing the same monkeys to sit over us, as they betray us, forever. That time must end. Chechen terrorists probed By Bill Gertz THE WASHINGTON TIMES U.S. security officials are investigating a recent intelligence report that a group of 25 Chechen terrorists illegally entered the United States from Mexico in July. The Chechen group is suspected of having links to Islamist terrorists seeking to separate the southern enclave of Chechnya from Russia, according to officials familiar with intelligence reports. Members of the group, said to be wearing backpacks, secretly traveled to northern Mexico and crossed into a mountainous part of Arizona that is difficult for U.S. border security agents to monitor, said officials speaking on the condition of anonymity. The intelligence report was supplied to the U.S. government in late August or early September and was based on information from an intelligence source that has been proved reliable in other instances, one official said. A second U.S. official said the report is being investigated, but said it could not be determined whether the group of Chechens actually entered the country, as the intelligence source reported. "We don't know whether or not that report is true," this official said. A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that the intelligence report was provided by another government agency, but said Border Patrol agents were unable to verify its accuracy. It could not be learned whether the reported infiltration is related to the recent Education Department warning to school officials to examine security in the aftermath of the attack last month by pro-Chechnya Muslim terrorists on a school in Russia, in which more than 300 people were killed and some 700 wounded. In the Russian attack, heavily armed Islamists took over and wired with explosives the school building in Beslan, North Ossetia. It is believed that an accidental explosion set off a battle between Russian security personnel and the terrorists, who set off several explosions and shot schoolchildren and teachers as they tried to escape. U.S. officials believe the Beslan terrorists included some al Qaeda-linked foreign terrorists. The Education Department letter said that school officials should examine "protective measure guidance" for helping to prevent and respond to a similar terrorist attack, were it to occur in the United States. The notice said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are "currently unaware of any specific, credible information indicating a terrorist threat to public and private schools, universities or colleges in the United States." The letter stated that indicators of terrorist surveillance before an attack include interest in site plans for schools, bus routes and attendance lists from persons who don't normally request such information. Authorities also were advised to remain alert for "static surveillance" by people who may be disguised as panhandlers, shoeshiners, newspaper or flower vendors, or street sweepers who seem out of place in a particular area. Other indicators of terrorist surveillance can include spying on school security drills, people staring at employees or vehicles in parking areas, and surveillance by pedestrians. Fears of an attack on American schools also were raised by the recent discovery in Iraq of a computer disk containing data showing the layout of six schools in the United States, including districts in California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey and Oregon. Officials believed the disk may have been part of a terrorist plot. However, FBI officials said on Friday that there did not appear to be a terrorist threat connected to the computer disk. The Iraq i who had the disk, a member of Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party, apparently was collecting information from the Internet sites of American schools that would be useful for emergency planning for Iraqi schools, U.S. officials said. U.S. security officials have been concerned in recent months that al Qaeda or other terrorists are planning to enter the United States from Mexico. Intelligence officials said a suspected al Qaeda leader who has been in the United States was spotted recently in Mexico. Officials believe Adnan Shukrijumah, whom the FBI wants for questioning, met with alien smugglers in Mexico and Honduras and was seeking ways to bring al Qaeda members into the United States. Shukrijumah was seen in August in the Sonora province of northern Mexico, officials said. Since October 2003, authorities have arrested five Arabs attempting to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico. In July, officials dismissed as untrue an Internet report that said a group of Middle Eastern men were recently caught trying to cross the border from Mexico. The report apparently was based on a group of Oaxacan tribesmen who were stopped as they tried to cross the border in Arizona. The tribesmen spoke an Indian language native to southern Mexico that may have been mistaken for Arabic, officials said at the time. The time left for us to influence the Chinese government's decision on Tenzin Delek Rinpoche is short - his case will be decided when the two year reprieve on his death sentence ends between December 2004 and January 2005. With enough people worldwide speaking up for Tenzin Delek, we can make sure that he is not executed, and free him. In order to maximize the impact of efforts to save Rinpoche's life, SFT is coordinating different activities you can do each month to mobilize more support for his case and increase the pressure on the Chinese government to free him. Please participate this month: hold a "Free Tenzin Film Night" to raise awareness at your school or in your community about Tenzin Delek's plight. Here is how you can go about putting together this event: 1) Organize a film screening using a moving new film, "Devotion and Defiance," about religious persecution in Tibet. Speak afterwards about Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's case using information from the SFT website, and ask the audience to sign postcards and petitions to help save his life. 2) Set up a table in any busy public place - at a fair, a school, a community center, etc. Bring petitions, postcards, and fact sheets about Tenzin Delek Rinpoche. Here are the tools we can provide for you: 1) "Devotion and Defiance," a moving new film about religious persecution in Tibet. Order free by emailing campaigns at studentsforafreetibet.org (please include your name and mailing address). DVD format, 35 minutes. 2) Postcards relevant to your country, available from: - European Union, order from TSG Netherland tibetsg at xs4all.nl - France, from France-Tibet: http://www.tibet.fr/tenzindelek.htm - Germany, from ICT Germany: ict-d at savetibet.org - United Kingdom, from Free Tibet Campaign: campaigns at freetibet.org - United States, from Students for a Free Tibet: campaigns at studentsforafreetibet.org - other countries - please ask people to write letters to decision makers (link to addresses below) 3) A downloadable fact sheet on Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, sample letters, and petitions, available at http://www.studentsforafreetibet.org/article.php?id=459. 4) A list of contact information for key decision-makers in Tenzin Delek's case, at http://www.studentsforafreetibet.org/article.php?id=460 and http://www.studentsforafreetibet.org/article.php?id=457 Thank you for taking action, and good luck! Together we can save Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's life. Freya, Alma, Lhadon, Han, and the SFT Crew P.S. In an Oct. 4 note to Editor & Publisher magazine, Fassihi said she never meant the e-mail to become public. She is now on a vacation that she and her employers say was planned long before the controversial posting. Subject: From Baghdad, September 29, 2004 BEING a foreign correspondent in Baghdad these days is like being under virtual house arrest. Forget about the reasons that lured me to this job: a chance to see the world, explore the exotic, meet new people in far away lands, discover their ways and tell stories that could make a difference. Little by little, day-by-day, being based in Iraq has defied all those reasons. I am house bound. I leave when I have a very good reason to and a scheduled interview. I avoid going to people's homes and never walk in the streets. I can't go grocery shopping any more, can't eat in restaurants, can't strike a conversation with strangers, can't look for stories, can't drive in any thing but a full armored car, can't go to scenes of breaking news stories, can't be stuck in traffic, can't speak English outside, can't take a road trip, can't say I'm an American, can't linger at checkpoints, can't be curious about what people are saying, doing, feeling. And can't and can't. There has been one too many close calls, including a car bomb so near our house that it blew out all the windows. So now my most pressing concern every day is not to write a kick-ass story but to stay alive and make sure our Iraqi employees stay alive. In Baghdad I am a security personnel first, a reporter second. It's hard to pinpoint when the "turning point' exactly began. Was it April [2004] when the Fallujah fell out of the grasp of the Americans? Was it when Moqtada and Jish Mahdi declared war on the U.S. military? Was it when Sadr City, home to 10 per cent of Iraq's population, became a nightly battlefield for the Americans? Or was it when the insurgency began spreading from isolated pockets in the Sunni triangle to include most of Iraq? Despite President Bush's rosy assessments, Iraq remains a disaster. If under Saddam it was a "potential" threat, under the Americans it has been transformed to "imminent and active threat," a foreign policy failure bound to haunt the United States for decades to come. Iraqis like to call this mess "the situation." When asked "how are thing?" they reply: "the situation is very bad." What they mean by situation is this: the Iraqi government doesn't control most Iraqi cities, there are several car bombs going off each day around the country killing and injuring scores of innocent people, the country's roads are becoming impassable and littered by hundreds of land mines and explosive devices aimed to kill American soldiers, there are assassinations, kidnappings and beheadings. The situation, basically, means a raging barbaric guerrilla war. In four days, 110 people died and over 300 got injured in Baghdad alone. The numbers are so shocking that the ministry of health -- which was attempting an exercise of public transparency by releasing the numbers -- has now stopped disclosing them. Insurgents now attack Americans 87 times a day. A friend drove thru the Shiite slum of Sadr City yesterday. He said young men were openly placing improvised explosive devices into the ground. They melt a shallow hole into the asphalt, dig the explosive, cover it with dirt and put an old tire or plastic can over it to signal to the locals this is booby-trapped. He said on the main roads of Sadr City, there were a dozen land mines per every ten yards. His car snaked and swirled to avoid driving over them. Behind the walls sits an angry Iraqi ready to detonate them as soon as an American convoy gets near. This is in Shiite land, the population that was supposed to love America for liberating Iraq. For journalists the significant turning point came with the wave of abduction and kidnappings. Only two weeks ago we felt safe around Baghdad because foreigners were being abducted on the roads and highways between towns. Then came a frantic phone call from a journalist female friend at 11 p.m. telling me two Italian women had been abducted from their homes in broad daylight. Then the two Americans, who got beheaded this week and the Brit, were abducted from their homes in a residential neighborhood. They were supplying the entire block with round the clock electricity from their generator to win friends. The abductors grabbed one of them at 6 a.m. when he came out to switch on the generator; his beheaded body was thrown back near the neighborhoods. The insurgency, we are told, is rampant with no signs of calming down. If anything, it is growing stronger, organized and more sophisticated every day. The various elements within it -- Baathists, criminals, nationalists and Al Qaeda -- are cooperating and coordinating. I went to an emergency meeting for foreign correspondents with the military and embassy to discuss the kidnappings. We were somberly told our fate would largely depend on where we were in the kidnapping chain once it was determined we were missing. Here is how it goes: criminal gangs grab you and sell you up to Baathists in Fallujah, who will in turn sell you to Al Qaeda. In turn, cash and weapons flow the other way from Al Qaeda to the Baathists to the criminals. My friend Georges, the French journalist snatched on the road to Najaf, has been missing for a month with no word on release or whether he is still alive. America's last hope for a quick exit? The Iraqi police and National Guard units we are spending billions of dollars to train. The cops are being murdered by the dozens every day -- over 700 to date -- and the insurgents are infiltrating their ranks. The problem is so serious that the U.S. military has allocated $6 million dollars to buy out 30,000 cops they just trained to get rid of them quietly. As for reconstruction: firstly it's so unsafe for foreigners to operate that almost all projects have come to a halt. After two years, of the $18 billion Congress appropriated for Iraq reconstruction only about $1 billion or so has been spent and a chuck has now been reallocated for improving security, a sign of just how bad things are going here. Oil dreams? Insurgents disrupt oil flow routinely as a result of sabotage and oil prices have hit record high of $49 a barrel. Who did this war exactly benefit? Was it worth it? Are we safer because Saddam is holed up and Al Qaeda is running around in Iraq? Iraqis say that thanks to America they got freedom in exchange for insecurity. Guess what? They say they'd take security over freedom any day, even if it means having a dictator ruler. I heard an educated Iraqi say today that if Saddam Hussein were allowed to run for elections he would get the majority of the vote. This is truly sad. Then I went to see an Iraqi scholar this week to talk to him about elections here. He has been trying to educate the public on the importance of voting. He said, "President Bush wanted to turn Iraq into a democracy that would be an example for the Middle East. Forget about democracy, forget about being a model for the region, we have to salvage Iraq before all is lost." One could argue that Iraq is already lost beyond salvation. For those of us on the ground it's hard to imagine what if any thing could salvage it from its violent downward spiral. The genie of terrorism, chaos and mayhem has been unleashed onto this country as a result of American mistakes and it can't be put back into a bottle. The Iraqi government is talking about having elections in three months while half of the country remains a "no go zone" -- out of the hands of the government and the Americans and out of reach of journalists. In the other half, the disenchanted population is too terrified to show up at polling stations. The Sunnis have already said they'd boycott elections, leaving the stage open for polarized government of Kurds and Shiites that will not be deemed as legitimate and will most certainly lead to civil war. I asked a 28-year-old engineer if he and his family would participate in the Iraqi elections since it was the first time Iraqis could to some degree elect a leadership. His response summed it all: "Go and vote and risk being blown into pieces or followed by the insurgents and murdered for cooperating with the Americans? For what? To practice democracy? Are you joking?" -- Farnaz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The action was welcomed by President ?lvaro Uribe's government for its fight against Marxist rebels but condemned by human rights monitors, who warned of a sharp escalation in Colombia's conflict. The 2005 United States Defense Department authorization act, approved Saturday by Congress, also permits the Bush administration to increase the number of American citizens working for private contractors in Colombia to 600 from 400. The soldiers and many of the contractors will, among other things, develop and analyze intelligence on rebel movements, do surveillance and train Colombian troops in counterguerrilla operations. American officials who lobbied Capitol Hill to lift restrictions said more American personnel were urgently needed to help Colombia in its nine-month offensive in the south that pits 18,000 Colombian soldiers against the country's most formidable rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. "That requires logistical capabilities, maintaining supply lines, getting food and fuel to the front, providing medical evacuation capabilities," said Adam Isacson, a senior analyst at the Center for International Policy, a Washington group that tracks Colombia. "They need a lot more American personnel to fill those gaps." Though the United States has contributed $3.3 billion to Colombia, most of it in military aid, Mr. Uribe has lobbied hard for a larger American role in the 40-year-old, drug-fueled conflict. Lifting the Congressionally mandated limits on troops and contractors, a little-noticed measure in the 5,000-page Pentagon authorization bill, is seen by some political analysts and rights advocates as a major step toward even larger American troop commitments. In the months before the passage by the United States in 2000 of Plan Colombia, a $1.3 billion antidrug initiative, members of Congress hotly debated whether involvement in Colombia could lead to a Vietnam-like quagmire. "The main concern is two years from now: what is going to stop them from coming back for more, until Colombia becomes one of our most serious military commitments," Mr. Isacson said, referring to American military planners. The work Americans and others do in Colombia's conflict is perilous. Eleven contractors, American and other foreign nationals, working for American companies under Pentagon contracts have been killed since 1998. Three Americans whose plane crashed in a surveillance mission over rebel territory remain in guerrilla hands 17 months after being taken hostage. Under Mr. Uribe's administration, violence has ebbed in Colombia, the economy has improved and the security forces have made gains eroding rebel forces and destroying vast fields of coca, the crop used to make cocaine. But combat remains common, and political assassinations and kidnappings occur with staggering frequency. American involvement is being ratcheted up as the United States steadily increases training for police and military forces in Latin America. In 2003, American soldiers trained 22,831 Latin American troops and police officers, 52 percent more than in 2002, said a report released last week by three Washington-based policy groups, the Center for International Policy, the Washington Office on Latin America and the Latin America Working Group Education Fund. In Colombia, nearly 13,000 troops received American training, up from 6,477 in 2002. Even before the new policy in Colombia was approved, American officials and military officers had hinted that support for Mr. Uribe's government would be expanded. "We will stay the course," Gen. James Hill, the commander of American military operations in Latin America, said last week in Bogot? in a farewell address before he retired. He said that the United States would "assist the Colombian people in ways that are necessary to win the war." -- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Speakers from the Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) in South Dakota will share their knowledge from the Lakota perspective about the impact of the Euro-American invasion on the indigenous nations. Topic areas will include the effect of colonization and christenization of native nations on today's people: the myriad of social problems caused by the cultural genocide against people of the Oceti Sakowin and thoughts on how to reverse this condition through the revitalization of traditional Lakota life ways and through people reclaiming their kinship system, Lakota language, and spiritual way of life: decolonization; as well as talks on sovereignty, treaty rights and human rights. Experienced activists and leaders will share expertise and histories with the young activists and organizers. The Rally will sponsor an "open microphone" to provide an opportunity for young activists to talk about issues facing their communities, bands, nations; and to open a dialog with other young people on how to impact the issues they feel are important. Snapshot presentations at the Rally will include the proposed uranium mine near the Pine Ridge Reservation on the South Dakota-Nebraska state line, and the proposed nuclear waste dump Nebraska is planning for the Rosebud Reservation border with Nebraska; and the local issue of the proposed coal-bed strip mining for Couteau, North Dakota and its effects on sacred sites to the Oceti Sakowin. Other issues to be discussed include effective organizing and environmental racism. The Stop the Lewis and Clark Resistance Group believes it is important to educate native nations and the general public about such topics, as these issues are a result of the invasion of native lands by the Euro-Americans who followed the blueprint laid out by Lewis and Clark. Indigenous people and nations do not feel the same way about the "Louisiana Purchase" as do most Americans-that it was okay to purchase land at 3 cents an acre from someone who didn't even own it! The indigenous perspective will be shared about this "?merican" historical event as well as other events in the Lewis and Clark version of the portrayal of "American" history. The Stop the Lewis and Clark Resistance Group will protest the reenactment activities on October 22, 2004 scheduled for 11:00 am at Bismark, ND on the University of Mary Campus. The Resistance Group will portray the truth as seen from indigenous eyes through the non-violent direct action to protest this $87 million travesty.
