Dear Hack,
We damn sure need you back! I'm stationed here at Balad, LSA Anaconda. I've been a soldier for three decades, and I have never even imagined what goes on here! Guard towers with nobody in them (unless the big brass are coming), base defense plan ignored, most of the c-wire for that is laying in the dump) tax payers money spent on palm trees, no 9mm ammo, (there is the almost two million rounds of state department ammo? They must plan on relieving us in place!). We can't touch it. Troops being sent this far north with none, Nada that's no ammo, or mags, the list goes on and on!
What happened to lessons learned? Recently I had the misfortune of hearing a radio conversation in the px, between one of the towers, and their control, if that's what you want to call it, it went like this..........(tower) I have people setting up a mortar, 50 yards outside the wire............ Answer... Continue to observe.......tower...oh my god they shooting........ At least three rounds, no return fire, reason .......the tower wasn't given permission to fire!!!!!!!? Rules of engagement? Another recent incident.....broad daylight ......a pick up truck stops near the wire, lets two kids out, the walk over to the fence, cut a hole in it, come through the hole, and cut a surface soft water line, back through the fence, into the pick up and are driven off in no big hurry?????
Will I stay in after this deployment.....hell no........and you can count on me to tell anybody who will listen, as to why! Signed the unknown soldier....lead by the unknowing, unwilling, uncaring.
Hack if they find out who sent this to you, it won't be pretty, they will bake my bacon and get that retirement check!
Concerned sergeant

TX ANG Needs Help
Col. Hackworth,
I had read an article of yours about a Guard unit out of Cali whose enlisted men were voices the problems they encountered in Iraq. I found this very interesting and at the same time - kind of scary. My unit is preparing to go to Iraq. I had forgot about that article until we started running into our problems. We have been in Ft Hood for a whole month - yet we have only done about 3 days of PT. A reminder - we are a guard unit. Some of these soldiers a extremely out of shape - which is leading to bigger problems. In our first day of training - we had 16 heat casualties. In a 4 day FTX - we had over 40 injuries do to heat and bad training. I would say our leadership - some where along the way - forgot we were not full time soldiers. We are not prepared physically - and mentally is going very quick. We live day to day. There is no training schedule - nor any kind of clue of what is happening tomorrow. Our CSM has never even been active duty - nor has half of our officer leadership. Thanx for reading this letter - I feel you are the man to address this problem.
CONCERNED SOLDIER
