We will hear about the courageous Colombians who are trying to interrupt the cycle of violence and to correct economic injustice. Bone Marrow Drive Penny Woods, a native of Seattle, Washington has been diagnosed with Myelodyplastic Syndrome (MDS), a disease of the bone marrow. Penny's family and friends are urgently searching throughout the USA, particularly the Pacific Northwest for a suitable donor. That dynamic donor could be you! We are asking for a simple blood test and registration from as many people as possible. Discovering a marrow match truly means a difference between life and death. There is a critical need for a more ethnically diverse pool of donors. As a person of color, you are a rare donor - one whose marrow is priceless and precious to those of similar heritage. It provides the best hope (often the only hope) of survival to people of our ethnicity. Unfortunately, the number of African American donors is unbelievably low. so low that less than 7% of the registered donors are of African American descent. Because of this many of our people do not survive. This will not happen to Penny. We are stepping out on faith that our community will respond to this life-threatening dilemma and ensure her life. We are calling our campaign "A Penny Saved" because " A Penny Saved Is a Penny Earned" and she has earned her right to life. Although it typically cost $75 for the tissue typing, there is no cost for minorities! Remember, registering to be a donor could mean saving her life. Please carefully consider this life-saving donation if not for Penny, then for some other promising young African American in need. Next Bone Marrow Drive: September 30, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Seattle Vocational Institute . 2120 S. Jackson St. . Please come out and help with voter registration in Delridge/West Seattle. You want to make a difference, but skeptical about whether your one single vote will accomplish that? Willing to do your part, but not eligible to vote? Here's a way that YOU can be part of a solution- get more people to the polls, build awareness, inspire hope and enthusiasm and have fun, too!! What: Delridge "Last Chance" Voter Registration Mob Why: The Delridge area in West Seattle has been identified as being under-represented in regard to voter registration, and there are a number of barriers to voter registration related to work schedules, language, etc. Date: Friday, October 1st Time: 4PM-6ish (depending on response/turnout, etc.) Sign-Making/Preparations: 3PM-4PM (we need lots of folks/materials for this part, too!) Location: Southwest Youth & Family Services, 4555 Delridge Ave. SW (inside for sign-making, parking lot for voter registration) What: We are planning to have dozens (I hope!) of people and signs/banners on the pedestrian overpass that goes from the Old Cooper school, approx. 500 ft. North of SWYFS, and lining the sidewalk area between. Signs will carry slogans and announcements such as "LAST CHANCE!!! Register to Vote! 500 Ft. Ahead" "Do Your Part, Register to Vote!!" "YOU Could Cast the Deciding Vote- REGISTER NOW TO WIN!!" We will have signs and banners in English, Spanish, Chinese, and possibly other languages, as well as speakers of these languages available to register voters. The plan is to have it be a fun and creative "mob action", so boomboxes, dancing, potluck treats, costumes, and all zany antics (within the bounds of the law, anyway-we do not have a legal defense fund!!) will be most welcome. Please pass the word far and wide!!! Contact: Shannon Payne, shanpayne at comcast.net<mailto:shanpayne at comcast.net>, 206-933-2454

Evergreen Peace and Justice Community proudly presents: An Evening with Dahr Jamail: Independent Correspondent in Iraq Join us at 7:00 PM, Saturday, October 2nd Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church 308 4th Ave, Kirkland, Wa. Weary of the failure of the US media to accurately report on the realities of the war in Iraq for the US soldiers and Iraqis, Dahr Jamail went to Iraq to report on the war himself. His dispatches were quickly recognized as an important media resource and he was soon working as a correspondent for The NewStandard internet news site. His reports were also published with The Nation, Inter Press Service and Islam Online. Dahr's dispatches and hard news stories have been translated into Polish, German, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese and Arabic. On the radio, Dahr was featured with the BBC and numerous community stations. During the last 3 months of his visit, Dahr Jamail was the Flashpoints Radio special correspondent in Iraq. Dahr has spent a total of 5 months in occupied Iraq, and plans on returning in October to continue reporting on the occupation. One of only a few independent reporters in Iraq, Dahr will be using the DahrJamailIraq.com website and mailing list to disseminate his dispatches and will continue as special correspondent for Flashpoints Radio. Dahr was one of the first reporters to break the news of prison abuse in Iraq. Dessert and beverages will be available. Suggested donation is $5.00 (however, any amount will be appreciated.) Dahr Jamail is trying to raise money to continue his work as a correspondent in Iraq.

Thunder Music in Fremont is Back! Seattle Thunder presents Thunder Music in Fremont Saturday October 2nd 8 to 11 p.m. featuring Waterbug Records recording artist ERIN CORDAY with Joel Litwin http://www.waterbug.com/corday.html<file://www.waterbug.com/corday.html> <http://www.waterbug.com/corday.html><http://www.waterbug.com/corday.html> http://www.artmakers.com/nighteagle/corday.html<http://www.artmakers.com/nighteagle/corday.html> and Seattle's own national touring act GRACE AND SAVAGE http://www.graceandsavage.com<http://www.graceandsavage.com/> <http://www.graceandsavage.com><http://www.graceandsavage.com/> in the intimate listening environment of the tribal gathering place, Essential Chocolate Factory 3400 Phinney Ave N (entrance on the corner of Phinney and 35th) Thunder Music kicks off its second season of monthly houseconcert-style performances with two critically acclaimed acts who also happen to be 2 of our favorites: the jaw-droppingly beautiful newfolk sounds of Bellingham's treasure, Erin Corday, in her first Seattle performance in over a year - joined as usual by her incomparable percussionist partner Joel Litwin (known to NW folk fans fans for his impeccable work on many Seattle singer-songwriter albums.) Long a favorite at the NW Folklife Festival during her all too brief period of residency in Seattle (she packed the Rainier Room regularly and was eventually moved into the Arena to accommodate the crowd of fans,) Erin returns to her devoted Seattle audience at last for what promises to be a most memorable evening of music. Those in attendance for her set at Seattle Thunder's July, 2003 Interdependence Day Democracy Festival got a taste of some of her most rousing and politically-oriented material, still yet to be released. Joel tells us that since then Erin has been writing some of "her very best material ever," so we can all look forward to a very special treat at this show. Sharing the bill with Erin will be one of Seattle's finest and most original groups, Grace and Savage (a.k.a. hand2mouth.) Also on the bill at the 7/03 festival, Grace Hearn & Michael Savage have been Thunder Music regulars over the past year, opening the PoGirl show back in January, headlining our Earthday Festival in April, and joining the mainstage lineup at the 2004 Rolling Thunder Festival in July. Often compared to the Cowboy Junkies, Joni Mitchell, and Peter Gabriel, this truly dynamic duo has a sound and musical style all their own that's recently been dubbed "folk noire." Their songs are full of absorbing stories of ordinary people's life struggles, brought to life by Grace's amazing vocals and Michael's virtuoso guitar work, but not without a welcome dose of good humor. Their shows always leave the listener feeling good - fulfilled by the satisfaction of a performance that goes beyond mere entertainment and exposes us to a genuine work of art. Come join us for another first Saturday evening of music, humor, politics and community in an intimate concert environment. Fair trade organic coffee provided by Cafe Timor. See you there! SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, October 16, 2004 WowGK is part of a nation-building effort. It is not charity. It is the major event of ANCOP Foundation USA, Inc. and Gawad Kalinga for the year 2004. It is the formal launching of GK777 in the U.S. (building 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years). It is a gathering of heroes and a celebration of the best of the Filipinos. The exposition will emphasize the nation-building thrust of Gawad Kalinga. It will showcase the massiveness of the work of GK. It will feature the GK components of shelter, education, health, livelihood & community empowerment, but instead of typical booths, it will be a mini model GK Village and the guests will go through a GK Village journey so to speak. The guests will experience the look and feel of a GK site, with Mabuhay Guides leading them in their journey. There will be a world-class exhibit showcasing amazing GK transformation stories as well as the ANCOP USA region's accomplishments to date. The show, entitled ìWow! Philippines-Wow! GK 777 EXPO & CONCERT,î will be a special production about GK, putting into song and dance the deepest aspiration of the Filipino for a new nation. Wow! Philippines-Wow! GK is a partnership with the Department of Tourism in Manila, known as Wow! GK-Tourism with a Heart. A visit to the Philippines will include not just the beautiful tourist sites/resorts, but also the GK villages that showcase the best of Filipino culture and our hospitality. The local entertainers showcasing their talents and will perform from their hearts for the cause of nation-building. It will be a gathering of heroes because it is mounted to give recognition and honor to the heroism of ordinary people in the course of their extraordinary journey. GK communities are nurtured and sustained by showing everyone that the work of reconstructing a nation is through the reconstruction of families and communities. Beyond reform, GK seeks transformation in order to build a sustainable Filipino vision of harmony & productivity in community life active in faith and patriotism. Because the work of transformation is a process that takes years, ANCOP-GK caretakers volunteer those years and they are heroes for doing so. Caught in the mission of nursing broken lives, ANCOP-GK caretakers often donít have the time to appreciate the impact of their contribution beyond the boundaries of GK communities or their ANCOP regions. But the national leadership of ANCOP-GK sees the emerging whole from the efforts of each ANCOP-GK caretaker team and appreciates the actual and potential of an integrated national movement. WowGK was conceived as one dramatic vehicle to convey and share the view of the massiveness of a collective effort to the individuals and teams who are making it possible. The impact of the Wow GK will reverberate in the hearts of affirmed ANCOP-GK workers and carry the seeds for greater involvement by more volunteers and partners in the future. Become a volunteer and be a Partner in giving hope! PALESTINE: THE PEOPLE Films that reveal the complexities and dynamics of being Palestinian. Oct 31-Nov 21 2004 Sundays at 7pm Ethnic Cultural Theater, 3940 Brooklyn Ave NE, in Seattle1s University District Suggested Donation $10/ All Welcome Sunday October 31st Until WhenS<caron> Dahna Abourahme, 2004. 76 minutes. Set during the current Intifada, this documentary follows four Palestinian families living in Dheisheh Refugee Camp near Bethlehem as they share the centrality of the Right of Return - the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the homes they were driven from in 1948<to any just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Followed by a presentation by Nada Elia, Professor of Transnational Feminism in the Women's Studies Department at WSU. A Palestinian and life-long activist, Ms. Elia will share her perspective and analysis on the Right of Return and the current situation in Palestine. Sunday, November 7th Land in Black and White Suheir Ismail, 1998, 56 minutes Journalist, activist and resident of Dheisheh refugee camp near Bethlehem, Suheir Ismail travels to South Africa. As she shares excitement with black South African villagers who clear the first hurdle in their struggle to regain their ancestral land, Ismail contemplates the future of Palestinian refugees and their hopes of returning to their own land. Sunday, November 14th 500 Dunam on the Moon Rachel Leah Jones , 2002. 48 minutes Ayn Hawd is a Palestinian village that was captured and depopulated by Israeli forces in the 1948 war. In 1953 the village was transformed into a Jewish artists' colony, and renamed it Ein Hod. This documentary tells the story of the village's original inhabitants, who, after expulsion, settled only 1.5 kilometers away in the outlying hills. Rachel Leah Jones' filmmaking debut is a critical look at the art of dispossession and the creativity of the dispossessed. Sunday November 21st Paradise Lost Ebtisam Maraana, 2003. 56 minutes Filmmaker Ebtisam Mara'ana grew up in Paradise (Fureidis in Arabic). This thought-provoking and intimate film diary follows the director1s attempt to recreate her village1s lost history, including the story of her childhood hero Suuad, who was imprisoned as a PLO activist in the 19701s and banished from the community. The director1s frustration builds as her questions are resisted but she presses for truth. Presenting the rarely heard voice of an Arab Israeli, this important film offers valuable insight into the contradictions and complexities of modern womanhood and national identity in the Middle East.
