Hello compas,

I think there was some miscommunication about whether or not there’d be a
Healthcare committee, so I just wanted to check in digitally to ascertain
whether or not folks had any thoughts/ideas/demands that could be relevant
to our work as an alliance.

We know that, as of today, the Senate has already begun the process of
repealing key sections of the Affordable Care Act without a clear
substitute proposal. ACA embodied the worst of privatized health care
policy, but there’s no question that this will be a life or death issue for
many who at least rely on minimal coverage. It’s unfortunate that health
care access and ableism tend to be marked as ‘liberal’ or apolitical issues
when there’s such a need for intersectional organizing around this. (This
article discusses this in more detail: “Disabled People Will Die Under
Trump: An Emergency Plea to Allies
<https://medium.com/@carolynzaikowski/disabled-people-will-die-under-trump-an-emergency-plea-to-allies-7014382adf33#.pdz99hz91>”).

As far as campaigns happening locally, I know there’s a number of
orgs/coalitions that have worked around environmental justice, particularly
in Barrio Logan (e.g. Environmental Health Coalition), and which we could
also associate with issues around housing. Not to mention the defunding of
Planned Parenthood. There was also a ‘Don’t Take Away our Health Care”
speak-out event in front of Rep. Duncan Hunter’s office in El Cajon back in
December, though this definitely seemed to be on the more liberal end of
the ideological spectrum.

I’m willing to help gather demands or action proposals around health care
to present on Sunday, so if you have ideas or are interested in organizing
around this, feel free to hit me up at krysmendezramirez at gmail.com.

In solidarity,
