Hi folks,
Following up on the meeting yesterday with people who are organizing an
anti-capitalist, anti-colonial march as part of the Hamilton2Paris rally
happening on Sunday Nov 29th. We said at our last SH meeting that we would
likely support and sign on to the rally, but probably not have the capacity
to participate in a meaningful way as a group.
So, here is the draft call-out that they want to make for the event. There
is important language in there about how displacement is happening and how
borders are being restricted to those being displaced by capitalism's
crises (a message that the march is also going to have). If you have any
suggestions to add, or any concerns about our name being associated (as an
ally/supporter, not as an organizing group), please let me know as soon as
possible.
I also want to check if everyone is okay with me sending the call out for
the march to some of our supporters (not everyone, but some of the folks
we've made connections with who would be interested in this perspective).
thanks!
Caitlin
Nov 29: Against Capitalism, For Community Autonomy!
On Sunday, November 29th, we are calling for an anti-capitalist and
anti-colonial march to participate in the Hamilton2Paris climate change
rally.
If you're angry to see rich countries close their borders as the disasters
they create force people from their lands, if you see that many plans to
deal with the climate crisis involve stripping communities of their
autonomy, if you are suspicious of green capitalism and don't expect green
jobs to solve your problems, if you want to align yourself with living
beings instead of with economies...
Come participate in a festive and enthusiastic march against capitalism
and for the autonomy of communities around the world!
The Hamilton2Paris rally has been called by a coalition of local
environmentalists in advance of the global climate change summit in Paris
and their intention is for a decentralized and diverse demonstration, with
several different marches converging on city hall.
This anti-capitalist and anti-colonial contingent is organized on the
basis that the issue of environmental devastation is about so much more
than carbon emissions and that the best responses to it will never come
from the rich and powerful.
Although it is a victory of sorts that so many powerful people now take
climate change seriously, we can't afford to let this become another
chance for them to manage and control our lives and those of people around
the world. We want to remember the histories of resistance of all those
who have been resisting for hundreds of years in defense of the land.
These are the voices we honour and celebrate!
On Sunday the 29th, we will gather at 2pm at Tweedsmuir Park to march to
city hall. There will be sign-making and snacks starting at noon at the
Tower (281 Canon E, at Canon and Victoria). We will also be making banners
the day before, starting at noon at The Tower, during the weekly meal
serving there.
Because capitalism is the crisis!
Because we already have what we need to fight for another world-- and we
don't need world leaders to tell us when to begin!
