Hi everyone, Please see below for the minutes to our meeting this past Sunday. Yen 
 Sanctuary Hamilton Meeting

July 19, 2015

Attendance: Caitlyn, Blake, Lisa, Yen, Ajit, Gary 

1)     Check-in and Updates


 
·        Caitlyn and Blake provided an update on theirpresentation at Tower.

·        The event went well. About five people attendedand two people expressed interest in getting involved.

·        A participant asked if we had any brochures orpamphlets.

·        We can consider producing these as part of ouroutreach strategy.


 
2)     Gary – Black, Brown, Red Lives Matter

·        On Thursday July 23, the Hamilton Police Chiefwill respond to Gary’s deputation.

·        They expect the Police Chief will deny thatcarding takes place.

·        Gary is not allowed to respond at the meeting.They plan is to speak to the press after the meeting.

·        Sanctuary Hamilton will provide a quote for thepress release.

·        BBRLM will be circulating a petition soon.

·        They are planning to hold an event and rally inSeptember and will need volunteers to help out. 


 
3)     Website and Outreach

·        Caitlyn and Ani are working on the content forthe website

·        We still need to find someone to design thewebsite. If we can’t find someone soon, we will just up a site focusing oncontent.

·        The Hamilton Legal Clinic may be able to findsome money for an honorarium for someone to do the website.

·        After the website is done, a facebook page willbe set up.


 
4)     City Accountability

·        Blake, Lisa, Ajit will meet on July 29 at noonto finish working on the spreadsheet of city services.


 
5)     School Boards

·        There’s been a report that CBSA may have enteredSt. Lawerence School. CBSA cars were seen outside 

·        Yen to find out registration dates and then wecan start to contact schools.

·        Yen to contact school trustee in Ward 2.


 

 
6)     ESA Panels


 
·        The Employment Standards Act panel is in Hamiltonon September 10

·        One has already happened in Toronto. Othercities include Windsor, Sudbury, and Guelph

·        We can find out what has happened in othercities.

·        We can use the panel as an outreach opportunityto promote the lack of rights for migrant workers. We can try to get stories inthe Hamilton Spectator or on CBC. Have a banner and some leafleting outside ofthe panel.

·        Ajit is reaching out to organizations such asFurza Puwerza in Guelph to connect with migrant workers who may want to sharetheir stories and receive support.

·        Blake will send Ajit the info for registering asa speaker.

·        We had a discussion on who should represent andspeak on behalf of Sanctuary Hamilton. We need to be conscious of ensuringvoices of racialized people are represented. Important to consider race andgender for spokespeople for the group. But it also important that no matter whois speaking, our content always addresses racism.


 
7)     Workshop Series

·        Caitlyn has emailed NGen about doing a workshopthere. She will follow-up

·        Ajit to contact OPIRG in August to schedule aworkshop for Alternative Welcoming Week.


 
8)      Nextmeeting Sunday August 9, 5:00 – Coffee Culture
