Hi folks,
Gary from BBLRM emailed me about getting a short quote from us for their
press statement regarding the police services board meeting (as we
discussed at the meeting). I've pasted what I wrote below for everyone to
look at. I would like to send it to him as soon as possible, so if folks
have any comments, concerns, or suggestions please let me know by 12 noon
today (Wednesday). Thanks!
Caitlin
"Sanctuary Hamilton fully supports the efforts of Black Brown and Red Lives
Matter to eliminate 'carding' and random police checks in Hamilton.
Carding is not a practice that needs to be reformed - it needs to be
eliminated. We know that these checks disproportionately target people of
colour and poor people and create fear and intimidation in our
communities. We also know that in other jurisdictions police checks have
resulted in people without immigration documents being detained and
deported. This only serves to increase the fear that people with
precarious status live with in their daily lives and is in conflict with
the commitment to make Hamilton a Sanctuary City."
