Hey folks,
So in lieu of being able to meet today, here are some updates/requests
about the event.
I've attached a draft poster for everyone to look at along with a slightly
reworded event description based on the changes in circumstances that have
emerged since November. Can everyone please comment on both of these
by *tomorrow,
Monday, at noon* so that Blake can make a fb event page.
I have not heard anything back from Carlos, and Blake has not heard back
from Hodon. We will keep trying on these ends, but in the meantime, Ajit
could you get in touch with folks at NGen and find out if any of the youth
there would like to participate with their story?
Can we try and meet again next Sunday, January 3rd at 11:30 am (same
location)? Please let the group know if you can/can't attend.
Thanks all, and hope the craziness of the month is not too overwhelming.
Take care and see you all soon!
Caitlin
The Refugee Experience in Hamilton
In the past months, we have heard a lot about Canada’s generous efforts to
bring in refugees from the Syrian conflict. In all the talk about
humanitarian responses and potential terrorists we have heard less from
refugees themselves. On January 13th, Sanctuary Hamilton invites you to
come hear from refugees living in Hamilton about their experiences getting
here and the barriers they have and continue to face. We hope this event
is a chance to build stronger communities of friendship and justice.
The commitment during the election to bring 25,000 refugees by the end of
2015 and end Canada’s participation in the aerial bombardment in Syria was
a direct result of large scale mobilization across the country under the
banner of Refugees Welcome. This movement called on the Canadian
government to take greater responsibility for both providing safe homes to
those fleeing war and for its own actions that make other people’s homes
unsafe. Since early December, picture after picture has emerged of Trudeau
smiling as he greets refugees coming to Canada. Yet this is the same
Trudeau who caved to Islamaphobic pressure following the attacks in
Baghdad, Beirut, and Paris by reducing the target to 10,000 only to
announce that even this target will probably not be met. At the same time,
war planes are still bombing and special forces have been deployed to Syria
to continue participating in a war that is only adding to the destruction
and displacement in the region.
In the meantime, across Canada migrants continue to be held in detention
facilities, people continue to face long wait times to have their claims
processed, and those with temporary status continue to be among the most
exploited and vulnerable workers in the country. Canadian corporations
continue to displace people in countries like Guatemala, Eritrea, and
Western Sahara largely with impunity. To call to Welcome Refugees is not a
simple statement of humanitarianism but a political statement condemning
war and economic violence that kills and displaces thousands.
In hearing the words of those who have struggled to come and rebuild their
lives here, we can come together to demand the Freedom to Move, to Stay and
Return!
