Catlin and Maria,
I have been busy with the birth of a new grandchild. However, her mother
and father seem to be adjusting to life as new parents and so I am back to
my own life.
December 10 is the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Human
Rights and each year, the Amnesty International Group in Hamilton inivtes
someone to speak on the topic of human rights,
The evening is from 6:30 to 10:00. The meeting will begin with signing
letters to government officials regarding 10 wrongly imprisonned people.
This is a world-wide event and last year over 1 million letters were sent
on behalf of 10 prisonners. There will also be cards addressed to these
people so that we can express encouragement to them. Then around 7:30, the
speaker will be introduced and will speak for about 30 minutes, followed by
a question and answer period.
Our group learned of your group's efforts to have Hamilton declared as a
santuary city and want to highlight this effort and, therefore, we have
invited your group to be the presented at this year's meeting. We hope that
between 30 and 50 people will attend and given the importance of the topic,
we hope that we will be able to highlight the event through many media
sources.
I have learned that your group is holding a meeting on Nov. 13 and I plan
to attend. Our next meeting is on Monday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Binkley
United Church, 1570 Main St. W and you are, of course, welcome to attend.
In the meantime, I will send all the details of the Dec. 10 event to Maria
as soon as I have had confirmation of the venue.
Cheers,
Jeanne

Hi Maria and Jeanne,
Thanks for sending this to us. I think as a group we have not had a chance
to talk about this fully because we had to cancel a meeting this month.
However, I know for myself that I am still a little confused as to what is
being asked of us. What would doing a presentation for your group entail?
How long would it be, for how many people, etc? Are there others who are
being invited to speak to the same theme, or would it just be us? These
questions matter because we have to determine what our capacity is to take
on doing something like this.
I was wondering, on that note, if it would be possible to go to your
meeting on Monday evening to talk with people there about the
presentation. I'm not sure we'd be able to give you an answer by then, but
we should be having a meeting next week as well. Or, if you can send more
information to the group over the weekend, maybe we can talk about it via
email. For my part, I know that I would not want to commit to doing
something and then have to back out later because I did not really think
about what was entailed. Hope that makes sense.
If you can get back to me or Maria, that would be really great.
Thanks,
Caitlin
