Hey,
Just wanted to send a quick update about the detainees boycott solidarity
action we were talking about at the last meeting. I emailed Ken Stone and
he said that he doesn't know of anyone in Hamilton working on an action,
but that he would ask around a bit. I've pasted the information from NOII
below if folks want to take a look and think about what our capacity might
be. I think at the last meeting we said that if we're not able to organize
with another group to do something on the day in Hamilton, a few of us
would like to car-pool to Toronto and participate there, and/or organize
something for later in the month/early October. I'll let folks know as
soon as I can if I hear something else. Other thoughts?
cheers,
Caitlin
Hey!
Just wanted to send you a quick wrap-up on about our key actions in June
and get you excited about supporting Grassy Narrows at the end of this
month. Also, some important information about joining the 1 year
anniversary action against Immigration Detention around September 17.
Immigrant detainees in three maximum security prisons boycotted their
detention reviews for the entire month of June. Half way through the month
we released a ground-breaking report showing political interference in
detention reviews. Then we travelled to Ottawa and first shut down the
Public Safety building with a 10 feet tall Scale of Justice and organized a
large mass-protest. Check out pictures and coverage on this momentous month
of jailed migrant resistance here:

Also in June, we moved Toronto City Hall one step closer to becoming a city
that is safer for undocumented residents. Check out the coverage in the
Toronto Star:

This month we are supporting Grassy Narrows Indigenous Nation at River Run
2014 and we hope to see you at two key events. Make sure to get your
tickets to the Public Forum on July 29th which features Judy Da
Silva, Leanne Simpson and Stephen Lewis:
http://bit.ly/GrassyTorontoPublicForum. Pay what you can tickets will be
available at the door, but please buy in advance if you have some money to
spare. The River Run rally and march is on July 31st at 12pm starting at
Grange Park. Find out more at www.freegrassy.net
Finally, mark September 17th on your calendar, here's why:
*United Against Detentions - Call to Action*
*On September 17, people locked up in immigration hold at Central East
Correction Centre, a max security prison in Lindsay, Ontario, will mark the
1 year anniversary of their ongoing strike against immigration detention.
Around September 17th, we will unite to demand an end to unjust immigration
controls, and freedom of movement for all our communities. *
Join us! Create people-powered mobilizations with community meetings,
public protests and direct actions where ever you are.
Increased immigration detentions and deportations are the direct result of
laws that exclude migrant workers, refugees, parents and grandparents, and
low-income people from full status. This September, we will challenge
Harper's anti-immigrant agenda. At the same time, we will bring together
diverse movements for social and ecological justice to build community
visions of just migration.
This isn't just about Canadian immigration policies. In a world of climate
catastrophes, war, economic inequity and increased social oppression, our
friends and families are forced to leave their homes here, and around the
globe. Indigenous people continue to have their homes and territories made
uninhabitable by corporate profiteers acting with government sanction. This
September, we will link our struggles against all the forces of
displacement.
*To do this, we need to act together. *
*September 17th.*
*Join us in Toronto. Or organize an action in your community.*
