good points ra members

one :we could all begin our sessions together as rhythm agogo by actually handling and playing on the agogo as a sign of respect

two: we could use some of the money to treat ourselves at another facility (music)venue as was suggested

Hey gang!
I have bright blue linear bruises all along my upper thighs from Thursdays
walking play-a-thon...which means I get to be reminded (quite often) of the
awesome jamming we did!

1. Venue for Monday: I would agree that we meet elsewhere...I dig the
Capitol idea but I have ulterior liquid motives, obviously. What time?

2. Meetings with purpose are essential for a group to operate. However,
how meetings are approached make all the difference on the success. I think
rather than highlight that we need to address "our tensions" we need to
approach this meeting from a more positive and neutral perspective where we
are there to be together and simply talk openly about our views about
specific topics such as; a) Leading/leadership: What does this mean and
what should this look like in our group, b) Teaching: What are we
actually trying to teach to one another and to others ? and c) Group roles
/operational goals: How can we support each other better to be more
confident and cohesive as musicians? How will we then transpose this to the
development of this group?

Sometimes improved cohesion comes from better understanding of one another
and this only happens when we all feel valued, safe and equally heard. I
know that I look at everyone in this group with respect and I think that we
are all mature enough to come to understanding without an external party
such as a facilitator. As we progress as a group, it is normal to have
differences between us but if we opt immediately to reach outside of us for
the solution, we can deny the opportunity to learn from within. In my
opinion, if we set the tone of a meeting by inviting an external
facilitator we are already hindering our abilities as a group to problem
solve and become stronger. I know we can aspire to go forward on a vibe of
positive unity and healthy energy as just Rythm Agogo!

3. Gigs: I'd really like to play with Senos on Oct 14th, but we need to
practice fore sure! I can make the October 15, and Nov 19th Workshops as
well. Do we want to revisit a trivia night again? Other group goal plans we
might want to persue?

Lastly, I sold the drums you all left with me on Kijiji so I can pay for
coffee or drinks at the meeting! Yay!

I'd rather use group money for drums. If there is conflict it can be
addressed by those having issues...so if anyone has an issue with me, let
me know! Otherwise, I'd say we are all individuals and in a group our size
there will be the occasional flare up on a bridge but sometimes you need to
just agree to disagree. I'm also at a different stage in my life and just
don't have patience for drama. You move on and try again.

If you are not going to meet Monday, I do need to let Senos know if we can
perform Oct. 14. Neil has the details if you do get together.

Take care,
Julie

Subject: Re: [RhythmAgogo] Tonight, Next Week, and Beyond

Hi folks,

I am in touch with a facilitator, who I will be speaking with tomorrow
evening. I'm guessing we may have to have the meeting later in the week or
month if we are bringing in a facilitator, but from what I've been hearing,
I think it will be well worth it.

Costs have not been discussed yet, but please tell me if you would be
opposed to using group funds to pay for professional facilitation. For the
record, we will have I think around $600 left after the t-shirts are paid
for, so I would say we are in a good position, financially.

I think that, at the start of a new season, it makes sense to meet and talk
as a group, outside of our regular practice context, and that we've been a
group long enough that a reevaluation of our goals and of how we operate is
just generally a good idea.

We have lots of positives to celebrate and build on. There are ideas that
have been proposed but not yet explored, and likely many good ideas that
have not yet been voiced. And we have money that we should discuss how best
to spend.

There are also tensions in the group that I've recently become more aware
of, that I understand many of you have been struggling with for some time,
and that I would like to see sufficiently addressed. I suggest we strive to
find a time when we can all meet, probably for more than two hours, with
professional facilitation; and that we use this time to work through our
challenges and plan for the future. Sound good?

In solidarity,

Neil

> 2) making drums ... would like to create shoulder-slung, double-headed
> double toned surdos (Low - Mid and Low - high)
> 3) conflict resolution... we have people that lead in teaching,
> performing, organizing, participating, working... we are all leaders.
Do
> we need to consider appointing a committee that can handle more
complicated
> issues that arise?
>
> I really enjoyed myself last night (I kinda tune out when I play).
With
> bruised shins and a warm heart, and having been through enough
performances
> to know better... I know y'all were great!!
>
> We've had great performances. Performances can be stressful, so I hope
> that any pressure felt and lingering can be dealt with calmly and
privately
> (and even mediated if necessary) so it doesn't have to dominate our
> agenda. I'm not sure that I want to hear about specific conflicts that
> have emerged, but rather that we can trust that we will be really good
at
> handling what has come before, and what is yet to come.

> Hey all,
> It was really nice to see a bunch of you last night.
>
> Good call on the meeting (sorry, I didn't see this until today so was
> oblivious last night). Hopefully this will help us establish an agreed
upon
> way of operating as a group and address some underlying tensions.
Drumming
> can be such an energizing way to participate in community events... I
> think it would be beneficial to have the meeting in a different space
and
> with an outside facilitator so that everyone can participate without
> power/leadership awkwardness.

>
> Hi folks,
>
> This is a bit overdue. I'll get right to it.
>
>
>
> *Take Back the Night*
> We are playing tonight in the Take Back the Night march. After our
> participation last year, we were specifically invited by the U of S
Women's
> Centre to bring the music again this year. Those of us who can will
meet at
> Open Door at 6:30 pm tonight (Thursday, Sept. 15th) to collect
instruments,
> and we will walk them over to *the YWCA* (510 25th St E) -- not Third
Ave
> United Church, as previously believed. That was where it was last
year, and
> we somehow got ourselves confused. So if you can't make it until later,
> meet us *at the YWCA*. We will have a quick practice to orient
ourselves
> once there, hopefully have a chance to hear the speaker, and march
with the
> masses starting at 7:30 pm.
>
>
>
> *Meeting Next Monday*
> It was pointed out to me recently that it has been quite some time
since
> we had a formal meeting, and that there are some things we need to talk
> about as a group. I figured the easiest thing for timing would be to
meet
> at our regular time, and just skip practice for one week -- we'll still
> have the following week to practice before our first youth drumming
> workshop of the fall, and I suggest we have a separate planning
session for
> that, anyway. So, let's meet and talk from 7pm - 9pm next Monday,
September
> 19th.
>
> Informal survey: Is everyone comfortable with having the meeting in our
> usual space at Open Door? Would a different setting (say the Capitol,
the
> Broadway Roastery, or someone's living room) be more conducive?
>
> Also, please submit agenda items to me and I will work on putting it
> together.
>
> Also also, should we bring in an outside facilitator? I know someone
who
> might do it for free, but would probably appreciate a small honorarium,
> which I believe would be a worthwhile investment at this point.
Thoughts?
>
>
>
> *Youth Drumming Workshops*
> We are confirmed for hosting three of these so far this fall, for Open
> Door. These will be from 1:00 to 3:30 pm on the following dates: Oct.
1st,
> Oct. 15th, and Nov. 19th. If there are no objections, I will be the
point
> person for the Oct. 1st and Nov. 19th ones, and Julie for the Oct. 15th
> one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these will all be at White
> Buffalo Youth Lodge, on 20th Street. Should be fun and worthwhile! And
we
> will earn ourselves $45 for each of these sessions, which is nice.
>
>
>
> *T-Shirts*
> Our order was received almost three weeks ago now. I hoped we might
have
> them for the march, but alas, it was not to be. Should be soon, though!
> Anybody wanting to make a donation (suggested: $25) is welcome to --
we can
> now take cash, cheques (addressed simply to Rhythm Agogo), and
e-Transfers
> (sent to rhythmagogo at resist.ca<javascript:;>). In keeping with our principle of
> accessibility, this is strictly optional.
>
>
>
> *Gigs*
> Please keep your ears to the ground about potential gigs, and let the
> group know!
>
> That's all from me for now. Cheers!
>
