[RhythmAgogo] Tonight, Next Week, and Beyond

I'll toss this out there for agenda items1) mini projects (salsa trio, Celtic, Indo-centric)2) making drums ... would like to create shoulder-slung, double-headed double toned surdos (Low - Mid and Low - high)3) conflict resolution... we have people that lead in teaching, performing, organizing, participating, working... we are all leaders.  Do we need to consider appointing a committee that can handle more complicated issues that arise?
I really enjoyed myself last night (I kinda tune out when I play).  With bruised shins and a warm heart, and having been through enough performances to know better... I know y'all were great!!
We've had great performances.  Performances can be stressful, so I hope that any pressure felt and lingering can be dealt with calmly and privately (and even mediated if necessary) so it doesn't have to dominate our agenda.  I'm not sure that I want to hear about specific conflicts that have emerged, but rather that we can trust that we will be really good at handling what has come before, and what is yet to come.

Hey all, It was really nice to see a bunch of you last night. Good call on the meeting (sorry, I didn't see this until today so was oblivious last night). Hopefully this will help us establish an agreed upon way of operating as a group and address some underlying tensions. Drumming can be such an energizing way to participate in community events...  I think it would be beneficial to have the meeting in a different space and with an outside facilitator so that everyone can participate without power/leadership awkwardness.

Hi folks,

This is a bit overdue. I'll get right to it.

Take Back the Night

We are playing tonight in the Take Back the Night march. After our participation last year, we were specifically invited by the U of S Women's Centre to bring the music again this year. Those of us who can will meet at Open Door at 6:30 pm tonight (Thursday, Sept. 15th) to collect instruments, and we will walk them over to the YWCA (510 25th St E) -- not Third Ave United Church, as previously believed. That was where it was last year, and we somehow got ourselves confused. So if you can't make it until later, meet us at the YWCA. We will have a quick practice to orient ourselves once there, hopefully have a chance to hear the speaker, and march with the masses starting at 7:30 pm.

Meeting Next Monday

It was pointed out to me recently that it has been quite some time since we had a formal meeting, and that there are some things we need to talk about as a group. I figured the easiest thing for timing would be to meet at our regular time, and just skip practice for one week -- we'll still have the following week to practice before our first youth drumming workshop of the fall, and I suggest we have a separate planning session for that, anyway. So, let's meet and talk from 7pm - 9pm next Monday, September 19th.

Informal survey: Is everyone comfortable with having the meeting in our usual space at Open Door? Would a different setting (say the Capitol, the Broadway Roastery, or someone's living room) be more conducive?

Also, please submit agenda items to me and I will work on putting it together.

Also also, should we bring in an outside facilitator? I know someone who might do it for free, but would probably appreciate a small honorarium, which I believe would be a worthwhile investment at this point. Thoughts?

Youth Drumming Workshops

We are confirmed for hosting three of these so far this fall, for Open Door. These will be from 1:00 to 3:30 pm on the following dates: Oct. 1st, Oct. 15th, and Nov. 19th. If there are no objections, I will be the point person for the Oct. 1st and Nov. 19th ones, and Julie for the Oct. 15th one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these will all be at White Buffalo Youth Lodge, on 20th Street. Should be fun and worthwhile! And we will earn ourselves $45 for each of these sessions, which is nice.

T-Shirts

Our order was received almost three weeks ago now. I hoped we might have them for the march, but alas, it was not to be. Should be soon, though! Anybody wanting to make a donation (suggested: $25) is welcome to -- we can now take cash, cheques (addressed simply to Rhythm Agogo), and e-Transfers (sent to rhythmagogo at resist.ca). In keeping with our principle of accessibility, this is strictly optional.

Gigs

Please keep your ears to the ground about potential gigs, and let the group know!

That's all from me for now. Cheers!

Neil
