I could do practice this Tuesday night, actually! Who could make it? It would be a good chance to brush up for Ness Creek. By the way, Kyle, are you coming?
As to an August-and-beyond practice space, anyone have any ideas? I will try to push Peter and the other Turning the Tide folks on that space, but it's not a sure thing; it wouldn't hurt to investigate some other possibilities.

I think this is a yes... Copied the response from one of the coordinators (I said it was "my" group, just because the context of the email thread was just between me and Kristy... We are "we", and I think we will be great!) . Also, I should know today if my RV will be good for the trip, hence storage for drums.

I just got chills up my spine! Sounds awesome! On Jul 11, 2015 10:34 AM, "Corey M" <swirl_cm at yahoo.ca> wrote:
Kristy,
I'm getting it all together… really excited.
I wanted to offer up some more drummers… my new ensemble, Rhythm Agogo, will have several (six?) members attending Ness. They would be really pumped to participate, playing djembes, toms, agogos, etc. If they are welcome, I would be able to work with them early Thursday to bring them up to snuff with the arrangement. Think they would be welcome?

This is all great stuff!
Corey, thanks for putting us forward as Ness performers. Wow!
Lauren, yay to new shakers! Sweeet.
Jana, thanks for the RoR update!
Albert, I don't know, amigo. Thursday is your firm leaving date? If not Thursday, would Wednesday or Friday be better?

I will pitch that we are a group, and willing. We are supposed to meet the night before to find out. They may want me to use my steel pan, but I will have my djembe there too. I was thinking that if we got together early enough Thursday, we could run through. I will contact the drum circle coordinators and offer our contribution.

What?! Amazing! Count me in. I'll be bringing my darbouka and a few other noisemakers. Who else is going, and would you be interested?
Carolyn or Corey, can you clarify: would it be correct to say we'd be participating in this jam as individuals, and not as Rhythm Agogo? And who's leading it?

Hey everyone! Thanks for the update, Neil.
I just spoke with Corey and it sounds like there may be an opportunity for us to participate in a drumming jam in the main stage Thursday evening. Will send more info when I have it. But, maybe we can bring some drums up to ness? I'm definitely taking my djembe.
Cheers,
Caro

Welp, this is a bit of a long email. It's been a while!

Gigs: Our second gig, at the We > Tar Sands rally and march on Sat, July 4th, went pretty damned well, if you ask me! I'm sure you've all seen the wonderful feedback from organizers and attendees alike that Carolyn has shared by now. Let's keep it up! Anyone have a lead on a potential next gig?

Rehearsals: Last time, at Rhythm Agogo practice (read with TV announcer voice), the intrepid percussionists learned a new tune called Crazy Monkey. It's billed as "tricky" by RoR, the first such tune we've tried, and we pretty much nailed it. So that's pretty exciting! Here is the link to the music:
https://www.rhythms-of-resistance.org/spip.php?page=resources-tunes-big&id_rubrique=42&lang=en.

I won't be able to make it to the next few rehearsals, as my choir schedule has become suddenly and temporarily very demanding. I hope some of you will keep the momentum going!

Facebook Fanpage: Carolyn created a page for us: https://www.facebook.com/RhythmAgogoYXE?fref=ts. Thanks Carolyn; you rock! I suggest we develop and add more content ("about us," photos, videos) before we start sharing or inviting widely. If anyone has any videos or photos, you can upload them to our Dropbox account; if you don't know how to do that, talk to me, or check my earlier email about it.

New Members: Marina and Jay joined us this week. Welcome, dudes! I'm working on a few other friends who seem like likely joins at some point. Anyone else know anyone who might be down? I say invite away! (I should check: Anyone feel we should be keeping the membership closed at this point?)

Sambatoon Stuff: Michelle confronted me at work today and we had a rather stressful talk about a number of things. I doubt she will ever forgive me, but maybe, just maybe, she will now leave us alone. One notable takeaway is her insistence that Sambatoon is “about respect;” she says she looked at the Rhythms of Resistance website, and was very upset by what she saw. Apparently she equates opposition to systems of oppression with disrespect toward human beings. Our philosophies, I’ve come to realize, are opposed enough to make argument counterproductive at best.

The upshot of this is that it sounds like Sambatoon will never collaborate with Rhythm Agogo in any way. She seems opposed enough to what we are about that even cross-promotion, formal or informal, is probably out of the question. She did say, however, that she has no problem with anyone being involved in both Sambatoon and Rhythm Agogo. Hopefully that is true. For those interested in participating in Sambatoon, heads up that she has some new written policy that you have to read and sign in order to participate.

Rhythms of Resistance: On that note, who thinks we should join Rhythms of Resistance, i.e. start calling ourselves a RoR band, ask them to link to our Facebook page (/possible future website), and connect and collaborate with other RoR ensembles? (Jana, are you still in touch with those folks in Toronto?) Here is the website again if you want to examine it more closely, which I highly encourage: https://www.rhythms-of-resistance.org/

Location: Turning the Tide may be possible, but it`s still too
early to tell. I think we could be looking at end of summer before it's
known whether we could become a permanent fixture there. Anyone else
have any leads?

Fundraising: I believe a meeting to brainstorm a fundraising strategy is in the works. Stay tuned...

Thanks for reading/skimming, amigos!

Neil
