Another cultural icon of the past is back...this time to the Cinematheque in
downtown Vancouver (but don't worry if nowhere near Van...it's online, too!)
The European Film Festival is full of fabulous features...from the biographical
drama of /Havel/ to the comedy of /Karaoke Paradise/ to the horror of /Skin
Walker/, there will be many films that appeal to you.
The Fest runs until December 1st, so check out their program
<https://thecinematheque.ca/series/european-union-film-festival-2022> pronto.
You can buy tickets online, both for in-person and online viewing (you have 48
hours to watch online).
One upcoming film, I Never Cry, is a masterpiece from Poland and Ireland (and
uses both languages). It features the brilliant performance of Zofia Stafiej
who portrays 17 year old Ola. Her Polish life is miserable and she
characterizes so many teenagers in her situation. Her father is working in
Ireland and she pins her whole life on his promise to her to buy her a car if
she gets her driver's license. Humour, sadness, frustration and perseverance
abound as she tries to navigate and support her mother and disabled brother once
it becomes clear her father will not...and you can watch her grow into womanhood
right before your eyes.
It's a tough but beautiful film that plays Saturday the 26th @ 6:30pm at the
Cinematheque; it streams online starting next Monday (the 28th) until the end of
the day Tuesday, November 29th.

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness
(http://www.empathicparenting.org)
--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
