If you live in or near Vancouver, there's an all local production that you won't
want to miss: /The Hunger Room/.

Vancouver-based writer Scott Button writes a winning thriller with lots of
laughs. A suburban high school is the setting for a series of threatening notes
written in blood that are given to popular female senior students.

Staircase Theatre <http://www.staircasetheatre.com/> has mounted this production
with direction from Stephen Heatley that builds brilliantly on the writing.
Combined with production design from Daniel VanHeyst, the show literally unfolds
in the audience's lap, with a clever alley between two alternating stages.

The cast is all superb. Opening and closing the show is Camille Legg as
Caitlin, and she nails every note from start to finish. Her character is brash
and complex, as the story reveals a horrific childhood that manifests
convincingly throughout.

Matt Reznek embodies the role and soul of Tyler, a photography geek that has
recently lost his parents in a tragic accident and is still finding his way out.

Raylene Harewood plays Anna, a character meant to balance the extremes of
Caitlin and Tyler and she does well in doing so.

Evan Frayne plays the charming and hip Acting Vice-Principal and holds it
together when his life slowly falls apart. While not a role to relish, he pulls
it off convincingly.

Joey Lespérance as the flamboyant French-Canadian Art teacher brings the bulk of
the laughs to the stage. His talent and experience really pulls the show
together and makes this thriller fun.

I really appreciated the deepness and maturity of the writing and direction,
bringing up serious sexual issues as well as their roots in a manner that flowed
effortlessly. To make it such fun without undermining any of the tension and
seriousness makes this a production worth seeing and supporting.

/The Hunger Room/ <http://www.palstudiotheatre.com/event/private-event-17-4-5/>
plays Tuesdays through Saturdays until June 10 at 8pm with matinées at 2pm on
both remaining Saturday afternoons.

The PAL Studio Theatre <http://www.palstudiotheatre.com/> is home to this run
and I was also impressed with its story. There are Performing Arts Lodges
around the world and the one in Vancouver houses 111 suites for low income
artists. The theatre is on the rooftop (8th floor) of 581 Cardero Street, near
the Westin Bayshore in the West End of Downtown Vancouver. The rooftop garden
is as gorgeous as the theatre and a lovely place to mingle during the
intermission. Mark Canada Day for their pancake breakfast that is free for
anyone and an event unto itself.

Enjoy the show...and really, don't miss this one!
