No Added Suger: this is a phrase that got debunked in a just released Canadian
Doc called /Sugar Coated <http://thecinematheque.ca/sugar-coated>/.

It played last night at DOXA <http://www.doxafestival.ca/> and screens again
tonight at 6pm at the Vancity Theatre (no membership required and open to all
ages). If that's too short notice, don't worry, the Cinematheque
<http://thecinematheque.ca/> has an exclusive first run coming up starting on
May 15.

Simply stated, /Sugar Coated <http://thecinematheque.ca/sugar-coated>/ looks at
the Sugar Industry. And it ain't nearly as sweet as it tastes. In fact, it
smells as bad as the tobacco industry.

For 40 years, research has shown that sugar is toxic to humans in larger
quantities. Doesn't matter what kind (white, maple sugar, honey, cane, etc) and
it now has over 50 names to help us not notice how much we are getting in
processed foods.

The film does very well to entertain as it documents the work of an American MD,
an archival researcher, the work done 40 years ago, and a Canadian MD.

The facts are more than compelling: sugar consumption has increased by 46% in
the last 30 years. Now, the entire civilized world (uncivilized peoples are NOT
affected) is more at risk of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancers, and
dementia than communicable diseases (but don't worry too much yet, car crashes
are still the leading cause of death).

74% of packaged foods have sugar added.

So what is safe? 6-9 teaspoons per day. Americans eat 19.5 teaspoons of sugar
per day. There is about 4g of sugar in 1 teaspoon^1
<http://www.newhealthguide.org/How-Many-Grams-Of-Sugar-In-A-Teaspoon.html>. So
that's 24g of sugar per day, max. Any size soft drink has more!

If you're curious about sugar in any way (have you been feeling less than at
full health? do you have children?), I highly recommend this film. You may
never eat the same (or as unhealthily!) again...

/Sugar Coated <http://thecinematheque.ca/sugar-coated> /plays today at 6pm at
the Vancity Theatre <http://www.viff.org/theatre> and again at the Cinematheque
<http://thecinematheque.ca> on...
Friday, May 15 –@ 4:30 pm
Saturday, May 16 @– 3:00 pm & 5:00 pm
Sunday, May 17 –@ 4:30 pm
Monday, May 18 –@ 8:00 pm

Also on Sunday, May 17 @ 1pm is the Cinematheque's Cinema Sunday, a monthly
event for families.

This month, The Red Balloon and White Mane play, which I can't recommend
enough. Both are French films from the 1950s and both mesmerized my daughter
when she was 3. The Red Balloon is mostly B&W with some strategic colour added
(think /red/ balloon), while the White Mane is gorgeously all B&W.

They are both short enough for even the most civilized of children (34 and 37
minutes) and there'll be lots of real popcorn with real butter on top.

The Red Balloon is almost wordless with a few English subtitles, while White
Mane has a soothing English narration by Peter Strauss.

During the short intermission between films, you can even join in for a fun,
French-led activity where kids (and kids-at-heart) can have their photo taken
with the red balloon against a Paris backdrop.

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness
(http://www.empathicparenting.org)
--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
