Right now at the Cinematheque <http://thecinematheque.ca/> in Vancouver, /The
Wonders/ <http://thecinematheque.ca/the-wonders> will show you what it looks
like to see civilization ooze into a rural family's life in central Italy.

The focus is on the father and oldest daughter's (Gelsomina) relationship; he's
German and it shows, bordering on unstable, and she's loving and like all
children, wanting to please. Her younger sisters are a delight and the mom is
the hard-working cog that keeps it all together.

But the poverty/false hopes of civilization create most of the instability in
this family's life. Add in a very typically Italian version of reality TV and
you'll see the recipe for lotto-like disaster appear before your very eyes.

Alice Rohrwacher’s film is artfully and gently done, doing full justice to the
beginning of Gelsomina's transition from childhood to adulthood.

/The Wonders/ <http://thecinematheque.ca/the-wonders> plays 4 more times at the
Cinematheque <http://thecinematheque.ca/>, including tonight:
Saturday, July 25 @ 6:30
Sunday, July 26 @ 6:30
Monday, July 27 @ 9:00 and
Wednesday, July 29 @ 9:00

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness
(http://www.empathicparenting.org)
--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
