/I am Eleven/ <http://viff.org/theatre/films/fc8554-i-am-eleven> is a
documentary about a few 11 year-olds scattered around the planet. The
filmmaker, Genevieve Bailey, describes how she wanted to travel but not lie on a
beach and that a recent car crash and loss of her father had depressed her. So
she recalled that when she was eleven, she had the time of her life...
I really appreciated her attempt at diversity in this film; rich and poor, girl
and boy, north and south, indigenous and migrant.
What struck me most was how globalization/civilization has affected virtually
everyone in this film. She went far and wide and yet most, if not all, of these
eleven year-olds could speak for each other very easily. More scary was the
universal desire to get a job, at least for those in school.
More importantly to me, it also shows how rich and poor are extremes in more
than one way: economically rich are usually socially poor, and the socially rich
are often economically poor...the wishes spoken speak louder than these words
could ever try.
/I am Eleven/ <http://viff.org/theatre/films/fc8554-i-am-eleven> is scheduled to
maximize eleven year-old audience members (it seems), by playing the next 3
Saturday mornings at the Vancity Theatre <http://viff.org/theatre> in downtown
Vancouver:
Sat Jul 11 @ 11:00am
Sat Jul 18 @ 12:15PM
Sat Jul 25 @ 11:30am and
Mon Jul 27 @ 4:30PM
PS. The Vancity Theatre <http://viff.org/theatre> has quite a lineup of films in
the coming weeks, so I suggest that you follow my review blog
<https://reellife.wordpress.com/> to stay on top of their offerings; I don't
want to overwhelm this list!

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness
(http://www.empathicparenting.org)
--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
