I just saw /Hippocrates/ <http://thecinematheque.ca/hippocrates> which opens for
an exclusive First Run at the Cinematheque in Downtown Vancouver tomorrow
evening (Jan 30).
It's a French film set in a large urban hospital and it gives us a glimpse into
how things run in that medical system. Focused on the interns, and a 23 year
old one in particular, we see how this system - like every kind of system -
protects itself first and foremost. Given the context of healthcare, this
statement is louder and clearer than it would be if the film looked at
government or education or...just about any other one.
Film-wise, it's got humour (mostly subtle), suspense and a sympathetic character
in the Algerian doctor who is forced to play with the fresh-from-Med-school boys
and girls because of the racism of the system.
I also liked how the film portrays the conflict that arises in the medical
people when they start to think and care for their patients. The system
dictates that there is only 1 right way to do things, and the film does well to
show how well trained people react to this dilemma.
The Hollywood-ish ending was funny but disappointing, too. But even so, this is
an excellent French production with lots to say to those that care about the
civilization we live in. You only have a week to see it before it's gone...

--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
