Starting with the latest Denis Côté's film, /Vic + Flo Saw a Bear
<http://thecinematheque.ca/vic-and-flo-saw-a-bear>/ (okay, he may not identify
as Canadian and they don't actually see a bear), Wednesday, January 22nd and
running through to January 29th, Canada's Top Ten takes over the Cinematheque
<http://thecinematheque.ca> in Vancouver.

/Vic + Flo Saw a Bear <http://thecinematheque.ca/vic-and-flo-saw-a-bear>/
Like I said, the title isn't accurate, but you'll understand it when you get to
the end.

I like the pace, the acting, the storyline: two women, now out of prison, move
into an uncle's farm to try and create a new life. The system doesn't let them
of course, and the tension increases as the respective wills try to overcome the
other.

This ain't Hollywood and it is refreshing, despite the disappointments (in the
storyline). The acting is stellar and convincing and wholly believable until
the end when Monsieur Côté has a bit of fun.

Quebec cinema continues to shine! /Vic + Flo Saw a Bear

Wednesday, January 22 - 6:30pm and 8:30pm

This is an epic film about the essence of life: water. Very little narrative
with incredible cinematography makes this one slow to start but wholly absorbing
by the end.

Given the enormous range of possibilities, I admire the choices the filmmakers
made, choosing primarily indigenous voices around the world but using
technology's gifts to make the film spectacular and engaging.

If you didn't take water seriously before this film, you will when you leave the
theatre. And there's no guilt messages that I could perceive. Highly
entertaining with a strong and clear message...what more could you want, except
maybe a glass of clean, delicious water!

/When Jews Were Funny
<http://thecinematheque.ca/canadas-top-ten-2013/when-jews-were-funny>/
I'm not Jewish, not even religious, but I loved this film. All talking heads,
but ones that will make you laugh!

Basically this film is a lament for the 50's and 60's when comedy was delivered
from Hollywood and TV almost exclusively by Jewish comedians. The filmmaker is
61, has a 2 year old daughter, and knows she will never have the same
experiences that he has. So he makes a film to preserve many of them. I'm so
glad he did!

If you're Jewish, this is a must see.

If you're not, you'll learn much about the Jewish culture and likely be very
surprised at how many current comedians and comediennes are Jewish as well.

And best of all, you'll laugh. These people are still funny!

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness

--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
