Théatre La Seizième has produced another fabulous production in Des Fraises en
Janvier <http://seizieme.ca/des-fraises-en-janvier-2/?lang=en>, which plays
every night until Saturday, March 1st.
I'm usually impressed by the direction, acting, and set design, but this one
really shows what can be done by a group of talented individuals who work well
together and simply give the best of what they have.
The script is unconventional in many ways, from being reflexively
self-reflexive, to bringing in parenting, while being fast-paced, fun, and full
of laughs. Essentially it's about why we lie and where that leads, but the path
it takes along the way shows why Evelyne de la Chenelière is becoming well known
for her writing.
Craig Holzschuh again inserts twists and turns and polishes 4 bright and shiny
actors in his unique and pleasing way. I was particularly impressed by the
table and chair choreography...to mount this play in a conventional theatre with
stage hands and full set changes would lose much of this production's charm!
Like fine wine, Joey Lespérance has (gently) aged into a role that both fits and
anchors this show perfectly. Both Julies shine in their own ways: Julie
Trépanier as the primary love interest is not just gorgeous, she holds each line
and moment preciously and completely (and throws a little extra charm into the
drunken romance scene), while Julie McIsaac fills the theatre with presence and
punch despite a role of mostly monologues. Gilles Poulin-Denis is completely
convincing in his depiction of an insecure younger man who is scared to death of
emotion, in spite of being madly in love.
The simple set not only puts the players in the round, it allows the actors to
be front and centre as they should. The music further sets the stage, both
subtly and not.
And for us English speakers, the surtitles worked particularly well. Easy to
see across the stage, they were perfectly timed and quick to read and still
watch the action. They will be available again Thursday, Feb 27 and Saturday,
March 1st on closing night.
Théatre La Seizième has really impressed me again, not only with this polished
production, but how they continually manage to do so much with what they have.
But you'd best hurry if you want to see this show; not only will it close
Saturday night, it's on course to set all-time attendance records!
These January Strawberries

fresh this February and March!
