The Pacific Cinematheque <http://www.thecinematheque.ca/> has returned to its
regular programming after the end of this year's Film Festival.
Next up is a couple of Italian gems:
1. La signora di tutti (Everybody's Woman)
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/la-signora-di-tutti> is a Free Screening on
Tuesday, Oct 15 at 7pm. It is presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery with
an introduction & Artist's Talk by Mark Lewis
2. L'Avventura <http://www.thecinematheque.ca/lavventura> is a gorgeous B&W
film that shocked me. It's all about beautiful rich people but the message
goes much deeper, thankfully. One gorgeous girlfriend goes missing so her
boyfriend hits on her best friend...and succeeds! Scandalous but
authentic. Whether Director Michelangelo Antonioni intended to or not, one
of the most profound moments in cinema for me occurs when the boyfriend
acknowledges the angst of early 20's and while pondering why, the camera
moves onto a group of school children marching out of a building. If the
film was made a few decades after 1960, you'd see lots of nudity but this
one is all soft porn: the rich have to entertain themselves, notoso?
L'Avventura <http://www.thecinematheque.ca/lavventura> starts this coming weekend:
Back stage in Hollywood takes Centre Stage in two other upcoming films at the
Cinematheque <http://www.thecinematheque.ca/>:
Radioman
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/radioman> is a
doc about a former homeless person who has dedicated himself to film sets in New
York City and in the process has met and created friendships with many stars on
the big screen.
It's hard for me to not enjoy a character who only gets around by bicycle! He
seems perfectly content with his life despite its loneliness, and the film shows
his big trip to the Oscars in LA. Not a person I'd like to live with (wait til
you see his home!), Radioman
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/radioman> is
endearing despite his ego and those famous friendships, albeit soundbite in
length, seem genuine. He likely provides a grounding aspect to many of the
super egos that he takes great pride in knowing.
Casting By
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/casting-by> is
another doc about the unsung role of Casting Director. Again, many super stars
show up in interview form to acknowledge their career starts, usually by way of
a woman and in particular, a recently passed one of the name Marion Dougherty.
These women (and a man) seem to do as much work as anyone involved in the film,
but have only recently earned on screen credit and still aren't recognized with
an Academy Award. Even a campaign by many of the biggest names in show biz
failed to persuade the Academy to award Marion Dougherty before she died.
If you enjoy star gazing and seeing behind the scenes of your all-time favourite
movies, you'll enjoy this one.
Radioman
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/radioman> and
Casting By
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/casting-by> play
together...

while Casting By
<http://www.thecinematheque.ca/about-casting-and-casting-about/casting-by> screens:

Did you know that in Scandinavia...
--> there are laws protecting children from all forms of spanking and bullying,
even from parents
--> these laws do not imprison or punish parents but instead raise awareness
(http://www.empathicparenting.org)
--> the elderly are able to remain at home thanks to programs that provide free
meals, free transportation, and free care/
