 Vancouver Plays Chess for Che & Cuba!



An Afternoon of Chess, Art, Prizes & Fun Celebrating Che Guevara's 95th Birthday!

Across Cuba today, chess is a popular activity in public squares, clubs, schools and competitive tournaments. This is one of the many legacies we can attribute to revolutionary leader Che Guevara! From Che Guevara’s youth as a competitive player in Argentina, to his work to promote and organize chess across Cuba in the years following the Cuban Revolution, chess was an activity that Che valued and enjoyed. In honor of Che’s birthday, the Che Guevara Studies Center in Cuba is holding chess tournaments in Cuba, and calling upon Cuba supporters and solidarity groups globally to join in playing chess to commemorate Che!



Today Cuba is facing over 6 decades of a brutal U.S. travel and trade blockade, made even more difficult with U.S. President Biden’s refusal to remove Cuba from the U.S. State Department’s List of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Historically chess has also faced the malicious maneuverings of the U.S. blockade against Cuba. During Cuba’s 1965 International Chess Tournament, the U.S. State Department denied U.S. Chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer a visa to travel to Cuba, but he still joined the tournament by transmitting his chess moves by telex (electronic messages) from New York! In 1988, Cuban Grandmaster Guillermo Garcia Gonzales took second place in the New York Open Chess Tournament, but the U.S. Treasury Department used the “Trading with the Enemy Act” to confiscate his $10,000 prize. The U.S. blockade impacts essential trade including food, medicine and fuel, and tries to keep U.S. citizens and institutions from advancing friendly relations with Cuba. The U.S. government’s 60 year immoral and criminal blockade is up against Cuba’s commitment to advancing their revolution, and spreading humanity through international solidarity.

¡Una tarde de ajedrez, arte, premios y diversión para celebrar el 95 cumpleaños del Che Guevara!

Hoy en día, en toda Cuba, el ajedrez es una actividad popular en plazas públicas, clubes, escuelas y torneos competitivos. Este es uno de los muchos legados que podemos atribuir al líder revolucionario Che Guevara. Desde la juventud del Che Guevara como jugador de competición en Argentina, hasta su trabajo para promover y organizar el ajedrez en toda Cuba en los años posteriores a la Revolución Cubana, el ajedrez era una actividad que el Che valoraba y disfrutaba. En honor al cumpleaños del Che, el Centro de Estudios Che Guevara en Cuba está organizando torneos de ajedrez en Cuba, y haciendo un llamamiento a los simpatizantes de Cuba y a los grupos de solidaridad de todo el mundo para que se unan a jugar al ajedrez en conmemoración del Che.

 

Hoy Cuba se enfrenta a más de 6 décadas de un brutal bloqueo comercial y de viajes por parte de Estados Unidos, que se ha hecho aún más difícil con la negativa del presidente estadounidense Biden a retirar a Cuba de la “Lista de Estados Patrocinadores del Terrorismo” del Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos. Históricamente, el ajedrez también se ha enfrentado a las maliciosas maniobras del bloqueo estadounidense contra Cuba. Durante el Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez de Cuba de 1965, el Departamento de Estado de EE.UU. denegó al Gran Maestro de Ajedrez estadounidense Bobby Fischer el visado para viajar a Cuba, ¡pero aun así participó en el torneo transmitiendo sus jugadas de ajedrez por télex (mensajes electrónicos) desde Nueva York! En 1988, el Gran Maestro cubano Guillermo García González quedó en segundo lugar en el Torneo Abierto de Ajedrez de Nueva York, pero el Departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos utilizó la "Ley de Comercio con el Enemigo" para confiscar su premio de 10.000 dólares. El bloqueo estadounidense afecta al comercio esencial, incluidos los alimentos, las medicinas y el combustible, e intenta impedir que los ciudadanos y las instituciones estadounidenses fomentan las relaciones amistosas con Cuba. Los 60 años de bloqueo inmoral y criminal del gobierno estadounidense se enfrentan al compromiso de Cuba de hacer avanzar su revolución y difundir la humanidad a través de la solidaridad internacional.
