At a time when people in Canada are in dire need of funding for healthcare, education, jobs, housing and climate solutions, the government of Canada is increasing military spending and war-mongering worldwide. On March 28 the Trudeau government released the 2023 budget, which includes $55 billion towards new and expanded weapons systems benefiting dangerous military alliances such as NATO and NORAD. This is in addition to current operations costs, and other big-ticket items like the 88 F-35 fighter jets that the government of Canada has moved forward on purchasing. The fossil fuel intensive jets that are designed for strike-first operations have a lifetime cost of over $77 billion over 30 years.

In addition to increased weapons purchases, Canada is also an arms dealer on the world stage. Canada continues to provide well over $1 billion in weapons to Saudi Arabia and the UAE every year, as well as a $15 billion deal to sell Light Armored Vehicles (LAVs) to Saudi Arabia. Militarily and politically, Canada has supported 8 years of Saudi-led, US-backed war on Yemen which the United Nations calls the worlds worst humanitarian crisis. Canada’s ongoing arms sales to Saudi Arabia have led to the United Nations panel of experts on Yemen to twice (in 2020 and 2021) name Canada as one of the states fueling the war in Yemen.

Whether buying weapons or selling, the government of Canada is contributing to more imperialist wars, occupations, military interventions, bombings and drone strikes. Canada is also increasing its participation in the North American Treaty Organization (NATO), which is responsible for deadly and destructive military interventions in the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya, and today is fueling the war in Ukraine.

Join the action this April 20 to demand an end to Canada’s military purchases and arms dealing, and demand that Canada fund social needs instead of funding war! This action is part of the #EarthDay2023 actions initiated by CODEPINK in the United States, highlighting that the US military is the planet’s largest single emitter of greenhouse gases and consumer of oil, and we cannot end climate change without ending war.
