March 25, 2021, marked six years of a brutal U.S.-backed, Saudi-led war on Yemen. Alongside an indiscriminate bombing and killings, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, backed by the United States, Canada, and other western powers such as England, France, Germany and Italy, have imposed an air, land and sea blockade on Yemen since 2015.
 
The blockade has caused severe fuel, food, and medicine shortages, and has forced the closure of the International airport in Yemen's capital of Sana’a. The United Nations declared Yemen the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

It is in these circumstances that Yemeni American Abdulmalek Alsanabani, like thousands of other Yemenis visiting home, decided to take the dangerous and unsafe journey of travelling from the United States back to Yemen to visit his family. A day after his arrival to Southern Yemen, Abdulmalek was attacked, captured, tortured, and brutally killed at a checkpoint in the Lahij governorate at the hands of UAE-backed forces.
 
This vigil in Vancouver is being held in memory of Abdulmalek Alsanabani and to demand the end of the siege on Yemen and the opening of all Yemeni airports.
