On January 11, the Trump administration outrageously added Cuba back on its list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism.” According to an L.A. Times article by journalist Tracy Wilkinson, “Nine days before leaving office, Trump Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo created extra obstacles that would trip up the Biden administration in its efforts to return to rapprochement with Cuba. Pompeo and Trump put Cuba on the list of state “sponsors of terrorism” with only three other countries: Iran, North Korea and Syria. Most experts say the label is purely political. Normally the designation comes after an extensive review by the State Department and then consultation with Congress. That did not happen."
On February 17, the Canadian Network on Cuba and our allies in the Cuba solidarity movement will unite to demand that Cuba be immediately removed from this list during our monthly virtual picket. Remember: Cuba saves lives and Cuba condemns terrorism!
We also know that the new Biden administration is looking at ways that it can loosen some of the Trump administration’s tightening of the U.S. blockade over the last 4 years, but this is not enough! We demand an immediate end to this cruel and inhuman U.S. government policy, which has been attempting to strangle Cuba for over 60 years.
Despite these ongoing attacks by the United States, Cuba continues to lead the way in the world-wide struggle against the Covid-19 pandemic, both on the island and with medical professionals in 39 countries around the world!
We must redouble our efforts to end the U.S. blockade on Cuba in 2021, #UnBlockCuba2021Please join the Canadian Network on Cuba and our allies in the Cuba solidarity movement on February 17 for our 10th monthly virtual protest action. These actions are a continuation of coordinated monthly protests against the U.S. blockade which have been taking place in Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal, Canada and Kiev, Ukraine on the 17th of each month since 2015.
