The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first
feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its
significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political
awakening and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails.
Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving
a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the diverse group of
voices of the people who were there.
The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary socialist political
organization founded by Marxist college students Bobby Seale and Huey
Newton in October 1966 in Oakland, California. At its inception on
October 15, 1966, the Black Panther Party's core practice was its open
carry armed citizens' patrols to monitor the behavior of officers of the
Oakland Police Department and challenge police brutality in the city. A
variety of community social programs became a core activity. The Party
instituted the Free Breakfast for Children Programs to address food
injustice, and community health clinics for education and treatment of
diseases including sickle cell anemia, tuberculosis, and later HIV/AIDS.
This film is very timely, considering the recent uprisings in the United
States, Canada and around the world against police brutality and
anti-black racism. Join us for a discussion on the anti-racist movement
and the struggle against capitalist oppression and exploitation.
This event takes place on the traditional, unceded, occupied territories
of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and
xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. In acknowledging this, we must be in
solidarity with the struggles of the peoples of the territory in which
we occupy.
