Today our world faces two major crises – imperialist wars and occupations, and the climate emergency. In both cases the perpetrators are the same. The governments of U.S., Canada and their imperialist allies are destroying our environment at an unprecedented rate, and are destroying the lives of people in oppressed nations around the world through brutal wars and occupations, sanctions, military interventions and bloody coups.
These military actions also have a direct and hugely destructive impact on the environment. The single largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels in the world is the US Department of Defense (DoD) which uses 4.6 trillion gallons of fuel every year. They are operating over 800 foreign U.S. military bases around the world, polluting our oceans with aircraft carriers and releasing fuel into the atmosphere with jets, planes, tanks and military vehicles. In addition the military uses all sorts of toxic and radioactive substances which kill our environment as they kill the victims of war, from nuclear and chemical weapons to deleted uranium coated bullets.
While the U.S. is by far the largest perpetrator of both wars and environmental destruction, the government of Canada’s role should not be overlooked. Canada’s Department of National Defense uses 57% of all the fuel used by the Canadian government. This is for example used in the 1,378 sorties conducted by CF-18 Hornet fighter jets over Iraq and Syria between 2014-2016, and the delivery of over 40 million pounds of fuel to the U.S. led coalition in Iraq up to 2017. 
Around the world, antiwar and environmental activists are standing up to war and environmental degradation, and it is more and more important to bring those forces together. Join MAWO this Friday September 20 for this important rally, taking place within the September 20-27 Global Climate Strike actions, to protest the devastating impact that wars and occupations have in the climate catastrophe.

This event will take place on the traditional and unceded territories of the Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilwətaɁɬ), the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), and the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) Coast Salish Nations.
