*_INVASION_*
In this era of "reconciliation", Indigenous land is still being taken at
gunpoint. INVASION is a new film about the Unist'ot'en Camp, Gidimt'en
checkpoint, and the larger Wet'suwet'en Nation standing up to the
Canadian government and corporations who continue colonial violence
against indigenous people. This powerful 18 minute film covers many of
the events of the last year. The Unist’ot’en Camp has been a beacon of
resistance for nearly 10 years. It is a healing space for Indigenous
people and settlers alike, and an active example of decolonization. The
violence, environmental destruction, and disregard for human rights
following TC Energy (formerly TransCanada) / Coastal GasLink’s interim
injunction has been devastating to bear, but this fight is far from over.
A collection will be taken to contribute to the camp and its legal
challenges.
*_COCALERO_*
Dir. Alejandro Landes, 94 minutes, Argentina, 2007, English subtitles
As right-wing forces with powerful imperialist backing continue their
efforts to remove Evo Morales from office, this film remains highly
relevant. The documentary follows Morales, an Aymara Indian and trade
union leader, as he travels through the Andean country of Bolivia in his
historic 2005 bid to be elected the first indigenous president in the
Americas. Cocalero shows Morales on the campaign trail, from formal
fundraising dinners to mass rallies, as well as his personal side,
speaking about his life and the reasons for his entry into the political
arena.
Left Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education,
Young Communist League, and the Vancouver East Club and UBC Club of the
Communist Party of Canada.
