(there's a lot of nyc stuff at the top of this but philly peeps- keep reading, there's stuff throughout for everyone). a couple of things: 1) we in nyc are having a work/dinner meeting this thursday. we had originally said 6pm. however, due to my new schedule, i need to change it to 7pm if that's not too bad for anyone. sorry! 2) everyone who was at the original nyc brainstorm session committed to tracking down and bringing books, articles, curricula, and other resources that might be useful to us in shaping our presentations and developing our resource library. if you are coming to the meeting but weren't at this original session, don't worry. but please bring anything you think could be useful. those of us who have committed to bringing things- let's not forget. :) 3) if everyone could bring something for the dinner part of things, that would be great: wine, cheese, salad, fruit, pasta, etc. please let us know what you're bringing so we can have a good, diverse spread. 4) i propose this agenda: 7:05- presentations by steve, ora, and alexis (activities and presentations that we've done in the past) 8:15- eat and discuss what we've just presented and viewed. 8:45- look over the different books, curricula, activities, etc that we've gathered and think about how and whether to incorporate them when we get tired, discuss next steps and go home... 5) philly folks- we will post on this listserv copies of the activities and presentations we'll be viewing so y'all can go over them 6) alissa and i have started putting together an agenda for the retreat/training. it's looking good. we are going to be calling on folks to be a part of this. we're just trying to solidify a bit of a schedule first. after rosh hashana, we'll be more on top of it. 7)philly folks: will you email to the list who nyc folks should contact if they need somewhere to stay for the retreat? thanks! looking forward, ora From alissa at resist.ca Tue Sep 21 10:52:51 2004 From: alissa at resist.ca (Alissa) Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 13:52:51 -0400 Subject: [Palestineinschools] housing for retreat? It?s really exciting what a great crew of people we have who are already putting lots of time and imagination into this project. if you have expressed interest in PEP but realize that you won't be able to be a part of it right now, that's cool- just tell us! too often activists over-committ and have a hard time being honest with each other about what we can and cannot do. we can start trying to change that piece of "activist culture" now... also, if you are coming to the retreat to check things out but aren't sure what kind of committment you are able to make at this point- that's cool too. just please be honest about that during the retreat and don't take on work you won't do. Please take a moment to go over it before the retreat so that we can have the most productive discussion about it while there. Basically, go over it and write down any suggestions for changes or just figure out whether you?re cool with it as is. Bring up questions you have too. Looking forward, Ora The Palestine Education Project (PEP) is a collective project- NOT an organization. The difference being that PEP won?t need to have weekly meetings or long debates about which event to endorse. Ideally, PEP will be a way for people to come together to do real focused work without being drained. Rotating committees, peer reviews, and everyone (who so desires) being a presenter will not only keep responsibility and participation equally distributed but also facilitate each participant?s growth in the different areas of work. The structure proposal: OUTREACH COMMITTEE: PEP will develop an outreach/publicity packet, website, and other reaching-out materials. The packet will include a description of the project and those involved, evaluations from parents, teachers, and students who have experienced a PEP program, descriptions of some of our presentations, and contact information. This outreach committee for PEP will consist of several people who will rotate every three months (unless we discover that a different duration of time is better). They will be reaching-out through phone calls, meetings, emails, and schmoozing to schools, religious institutions, universities, etc. There will be central resources/materials for outreach and publicity but there will be a committee in each city doing its thing. The point people for those committees, however, should be in communication and partnership. COORDINATING COMMITTEE: Requests for PEP?s presentations and determining who will be the presenters will be handled by a coordinating committee of two people that will rotate every three months. These people will check the email and voicemail and coordinate logistics between schools and presenters. They will gather PEP participants? availability every week. The coordinating committees for each city will operate independently. RESOURCE LIBRARY/CURRICULUM COMMITTEE: An important element of our project is making educational materials about the Palestinian experience and struggle available to educators and others. We are also collecting useful resources for developing ourselves as progressive educators. This resource library will include an on-line component as well as physical collections housed in NYC and Philadelphia and will include ready-made presentations, books, resource guides, maps, magazines, articles, curricula, videos, music, etc. This committee will be responsible for coordinating the borrowing, donating, and keeping track of these resources and will rotate every three months. PEP working groups will develop several interactive education programs geared towards different age groups as well as specific kinds of schools (i.e. Synagogue after-school programs, Muslim day schools, Catholic schools, etc). As specific requests come up, PEP will be able to adapt these or create new ones. PEP participants will be able to apply their lived experience and connections to different communities as they help to develop the track that most interests them. We are aiming to put out a consolidated curriculum book similar to those published by Rethinking Schools. The resource library/curriculum will be shared between both cities and the committees will work in cooperation and communication with each other. PEER REVIEW: Once a month, PEP participants will gather for peer review. People will be able to share with each other experiences, concerns, criticisms, and ideas about the presentations and the project?s functioning in general. Each city will determine when their peer reviews will be as well as what process of evaluation they will be participating in (i.e. developing an evaluation form to fill out after presentations about yourself and your co-presenter, a facilitated group discussion, etc) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ora asked me to post it to the list, since I won't be at the retreat. I?ll present it in its original context. At the end, I?ll make some notes on how we might use it in PEP. I think it would work just as well in middle school or high school as in upper elementary. --Steve Quester Ask two students in the class to come up to the board and each draw a face. Then tell the class that these are students their age, and ask the class to name them. Tell them that they?re not allowed to use the names of anyone in the class. I think it?s important that the students themselves draw the drawings and choose the names; it increases their investment in the activity. Let?s say that we?re in a Jewish Israeli school, and the drawings have been named Anat and Omer. Tell the class that Anat is really excited about the picnic next month [with a Palestinian Israeli class in a neighboring community]. Ask the class what Anat might have to say about the picnic. Write down all the statement that students attribute to Anat. Write them under her picture. Then tell them that Omer doesn?t want to participate in the picnic. Ask the class why, and write all the statements they attribute to Omer. Finally, ask them what Anat might say to Omer to allay his concerns. Write these down too. End of activity. The teacher/activity leader does not contribute her own opinions. At a subsequent session on another day, ask again for the drawings, and then explain that this time they?re students in the Palestinian school Go through the same process, although this time the Jewish students are attributing statements to an enthusiastic and a reluctant Palestinian peer. The same process happens, of course, in the Palestinian school. The students attribute statements first to hypothetical Palestinian students, and only afterward to hypothetical Jewish students. This activity will be useful to PEP in situations in which we want to bring out thoughts and feelings from the students in a way that feels safe to them, in which they don?t feel exposed. It?s also useful to get kids to try and put themselves in others? shoes. For instance, you may want them to give one of the drawings an Israeli Jewish name and the other an Arab name, and then ask them what each might say about the other, or about the Intifada, etc. Or you may want them to give each of them Arab names, and let them explore their assumptions about what Palestinian kids think and feel (about Israel, about the Intifada, about the U.S., depending on your aims). ===== The first day of the year: thoughts come - and there is loneliness; the autumn dusk is here.
