Vancouver’s chapter of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union joined other West Coast locals Thursday in a war protest that shut down marine operations.

The ILWU Local 4’s almost 200 workers took the day off, leaving two ships at the Port of Vancouver idle. Port officials said longshoremen were expected to resume work Thursday night and the terminals were expected to reopen today.

The action, which involved more than 25,000 union members, impacted the 29 West Coast ports served by the ILWU.

ILWU International President and Vancouver native Bob McEllrath said in a press release, “We’re supporting the troops and telling politicians in
Washington that it’s time to end the war in Iraq.”
